Total War: Rome Remastered Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Not a new game, but a good updating of an older classic. Gamers new to strategy, and those who missed the original, will find this well worth playing.
Total War: Rome Remastered reflects quality and care from every raised gladius and stray denarius. We think you’ll love this, says the remaster. If not, no worries, you can change it. It's more difficult that modern Total War games to get into, but it's undoubtedly a great package. So, two thumbs up then. Or to the side, if you want to be a stickler for history.
I've likely mentioned it a few times in the past, but if there is one game that has a place in my heart, it's Rome: Total War. Well, Total War: Rome Remastered, as it's now known. Total War is arguably the biggest strategy franchise around, so it makes sense for all the titles to be placed together in the alphabetical drop-down ordering of life. Shogun was popular, as was Medieval. Rome was the game that truly set the series going.
Quick up front confession. I don’t exactly understand why someone would ultimately play this over Total War: Rome II. I get the novelty and nostalgia reasons to try it sure. It’s a “new” Total War experience, and a chance for newcomers to see the franchise’s origins. And for those who played before, it’s a chance to replay the past but prettier and smoother. But outside that, and once those reasons run out, I just don’t see the lasting appeal. Yes it’s fun, in the same ways ev...
Rome: Total War was a game I played extensively when I got my own gaming PC when I was 17. Total War had always been one of the major reasons I was a PC gamer, with Shogun still being one of my favorite games of all time, though there has always been something alluring about the downfall of the Roman Republic that has drawn me to Rome: Total War over the years.
Total War: Rome is still a stand-out strategy game, and this remaster makes it more fun to look at and easier to play. It's a little underwhelming to go back to for a series veteran when newer Total Wars have modernized the campaign design, UI, and AI opponents so significantly. But there's plenty of nostalgia to be had, and those pre-battle speeches can give me chills just like they did in ancient times.
We want to emphasize that 5 will always be the “average” number, not 7. So by far, it’s 50% great and it’s also 50% bad.
Okay, right out of the gate, I will confess that I know pretty much nothing about the Total War franchise and / or their spin-offs, except that there are a lot, and boy, are there A LOT of games under this name. Just look at that launcher, is that even all of them?
Total War: Rome was the really big breakout moment for the series, and as a bona fide classic, the remaster makes sense – even if it is just for the sake of nostalgia. I don’t think the strategy genre necessarily lends itself to modernisation when the thing that needs moderising the most would have taken Rome Remastered and turned it into Total War: Rome 3, but if you remember what it’s like to enjoy older strategy games like Rome, the remaster is going to be quite the rush.
