It's hard to express just how much I adore Undertale without spoiling anything significant, but that's what I love about it. It tells its story in such a dynamic way, and with such a great understanding of the RPG player’s mindset, that it couldn’t have been told in any other way. It's a masterfully crafted experience that I won't forget any time soon.

When I first played Undertale in 2015, I was largely skeptical. The amount of praise that was showered upon Toby Fox’s Earthbound-esque role-playing game seemed unbelievable. Could this game that wasn’t even on my radar a month ago really be the best game of the year?

Undertale, in its short lifespan, has already reached near legendary status. Unless you’ve been paying absolutely no attention to anything, you’ve heard a lot of people talk about the game, but if, like me, you’ve never had the chance to play it before, the console release might be the perfect time to see what the fuss is about.

I find it difficult to be critical towards anything about Undertale because it was designed with such a deft hand. It's simply hard to find anything that feels out of place because it all feels so intentional. I'm happy I can finally confirm that Undertale is not just hype and while it's available on PS4, PS Vita, and PC I couldn't recommend it more. If you're a fan of RPG's or somebody who values a deeper experience, I think you'll appreciate how beautiful this game can be.

Creator Toby Fox said that he was influenced by a number of different franchises whilst developing Undertale, along with the silliness of internet culture. Regardless of these influences, he’s managed to create a game that’s already a classic. There’s quite simply, nothing like it. Fox has thrown his own sense of humour into the mix, creating a cast of unforgettable characters that you develop a real bond with, and a battle system that calls into question the very nature of a fight. It’s not afraid to challenge convention, chucking all sorts of random surprises at you without a care in...

Undertale is a superb indie role-player that proves once again that it’s not graphics that make a game entertaining but gameplay and great ideas.

At first glance, Undertale is a retro RPG that feels similar to the seminal classic Earthbound – but it’s so much more than that. It is the culmination of many meticulously crafted moving parts that come together to create something magical. The music, dialogue, characters, and combat system make every encounter unique; after finishing the game, I wished I could experience it again for the first time.

Undertale is one of the most unique efforts seen in indie gaming. Combining a love for the old with a willingness to innovate and utilize game mechanics to express ideas, rather than a binary input-output, this game should be on any and every one’s radar.
