Despite its unique narrative and intriguing premise, Weird West is often a frustrating experience that is difficult to enjoy playing.
I have been itching for a game just like this and I didn’t even realize it. The story is intriguing and the setting is realized in a lovely way. The moment to moment gameplay is fun if not occasionally simple or buggy. Even still, I would not say that those things detract from the experience enough for me to not recommend it. Weird West isn’t likely going to spark a genre boom, but I hope it gets a sequel because I would love to spend more time in this strange and wonderful world, and I would love to see what the developers would be able to make with another outing given how successful this first one was. Here’s hoping that WolfEye gets the recognition they deserve and that somehow enough people peel off of Elden Ring to give Weird West its fair shot.
Weird West offers up a world of intrigue with a terrific blend of classic Western fiction and supernatural elements, with a lot of enjoyable story bits and and a world that can change on a whim, but it's one whose awkward combat and bugs make for a bit of an uphill battle when it comes to truly enjoying this world. WolfEye should definitely be commended for their ambition and unique ideas, and the end result is still an enjoyable game, just one that could have used some extra spit and polish.
It’s buggy, the balance is off, and a good 80% of the locations only really serve as random sidequest destinations. But the storytelling drew me in, the stealth worked rather well, and on the occasions when I felt like I had resources to burn it was just so dang satisfying to slow motion dive out from behind a corner while blasting a barrage of shotgun shells.
An original, imaginative dark western fantasy world with impressive immersive sim elements let down by some sloppy chaotic combat and interchangeable supporting cast.
Weird West is an action roleplaying game developed by WolfEye Studios and published by Devolver Digital. The game was first announced at the Devolverland Expo on Steam in 2020 and its development team is led by Raphael Colantonio, who is best known as the founder of Arkane Studios.
Weird West is a game that isn't afraid to take risks and it ends up giving you something fresh and unique in the world of isometric RPGs.
A open-world sandbox that presents many opportunities for fun and experimentation, Weird West gets let down by the meat of the experience, with combat being a particularly frustrating aspect that detracts from an intersting story.
Despite some of the same minds behind Dishonored being involved, this top-down immersive doesn’t live up to its soaring ambitions and often struggles to entertain.
While being a more condensed experience than most other RPGs of its kind at around 20 hours, Weird West’s ability to accomplish so much within its confines is where it truly shines. It doesn’t have the budget of Divinity or Wasteland, but it punches well above its weight class thanks to some excellent world-building, clever writing, and character scenarios that always present new ideas to the player.
Weird West is a fantastic sandbox game that allows gamers to do what they want, complete with an interesting story and fun gameplay mechanics. Now, if only the AI-controller characters and the inventory system were addressed, it would make things better for the players. Weird West is a strong debut for Wolfeye Studios’ first game, and I can’t wait to see what else they have up their sleeves.
Weird West very much lives up to its name. In each character’s journey, a wide tapestry of dark and spooky adventures play out across the Wild West. Monsters of both the human and occult variety are bound by the decisions you make, and those choices carry on to make each adventure in this take on the dusty unsettled frontier more interesting. I wish that the game didn’t push me to micromanage my inventory so much and that some critical quirks didn’t hamper the experience, but put those issues aside and it’s a deeply interesting narrative with more than its fair share of riveting shootouts and adventure.
A dark-fantasy western RPG with a compelling world and an ambitious narrative, Weird West is undermined by awkward combat and micromanagement. Weird West's rotating multi-character perspective will be an acquired taste, but makes sense as a method of world-building. It’s got room to grow, but right now, it’s challenging to build momentum in the early game and to persevere through the mid-game.
Weird West is like a love-hate relationship. It can be extremely frustrating one minute, and you want nothing to do with it. Then, the next minute, you want nothing more than to keep playing…However, all of it comes together to create an impressive world that WolfEye Studio should be proud of.
A brand new action RPG set in the wild west with a supernatural twist, Weird West balances challenging combat with a fully fleshed out western setting that begs to be explored.
There is so much more I’d like to say about the game here, but it would delve into heavy spoiler territory so instead let me just emphasize how damned fun Weird West is. Coming in part from one of the founders of Arkane Studios the DNA of games like Dishonored is present throughout. I’m excited to see how people play through each journey and just how much that varies from my own, and if they run into any issues I did not. The game was stable and well-polished, with only a few minor movement-related bugs and one time where an auto-save trapped me in a death loop. Thankfully the game keeps two auto-saves, so I was able to go back to number 2 and only lost a few minutes of progress.
When thinking about video games set in the wild Old West, the Red Dead Redemption series instantly comes to mind, and for very good reason. The two open-world games made by Rockstar Games are not only great in their own right, but they are also among the few ones that allow players to live the outlaw life with little to no limitations. However, the Undead Nightmare expansion for the first entry in the series showed how the Old West could be something more with the addition of supernatural elements that could turn the setting into an even more interesting one.
Weird West does have some interesting and novel ideas. Sadly, bugs, AI issues, and questionable mechanics prove to be problematic.
It’s no surprise to me that the first game the 2019 founded development studio WolfEye Studios is an ARPG Immersive Sim. The Founder/Creative Director, Raphael Colantonio, and CEO/Executive producer, Julien Roby, both came from Arkane Studios and worked on one of my favorite Immersive Sims, Dishonored. It was clear by their studio’s mission goal that they were taking all of their experience and crafting something that focused on gameplay freedom that Immersive Sim fans would love. Now ent...
Superbly written characters, the dark allure of its world, and an engrossing main story make up for Weird West’s wonky action.
For those what want to immerse themselves in a strange, alternative take on the Wild West and unravel a mysterious story, Weird West should do the trick. This is an engaging action RPG that while narrative-driven, still gives players a large amount of choice. And though there are some issues, they’re worth bearing with to see each of the game’s protagonists journeys through to their end. As the first game from WolfEye Studios, this is a very commendable effort indeed.
Arkane founder’s first indie outing is a chaotic soup of colliding systems, and that soup tastes absolutely delicious.
Weird West slings a few effective yarns, but fumbles when it comes to dealing in lead.
Densely packed with ingenious systems, Weird West is a game of endless possibilities that encourages player choice and agency in a way very few other games do, and reacts to your actions across every level of interactivity. Fans of immersive sims and action RPGs won't want to miss this.
Knee-deep in supernatural horror.
“While it has its quirks, Weird West is a bit of storytelling spectacle that seems to have been hand-crafted for diehard RPG fans.”
Weird West is a fantastic debut from Wolfeye Studios, a slick and addictive action-RPG that delivers a top-notch narrative alongside some delightfully chaotic combat in a world that absolutely oozes atmosphere. The Arkane DNA is evident here in the slick selection of powers and abilities, the choice-driven storylines and combat that gives you the tools to experiment, to toy with your enemies and approach problems from multiple angles. Side missions are delightfully well-written, there's a ton of dungeons, looting and crafting to dig into and, beyond a handful of buggy enemy encounters, the whole thing looks, sounds and plays like a dream.
The one thing particularly weird about this game is how awkward its control scheme is. I played on PC, and it had some pretty bizarre key bindings that never felt right, even after readjusting some of them. Swapping to a controller didn’t help as the aiming on a joystick felt nowhere near as accurate as a mouse so I had to begrudgingly use the keyboard setup. Another issue is how glitchy the UI menus are, as many times I’d see old quests (I’d already completely) suddenly pop up with their completion notifications, and some quests wouldn’t show up at all (even in my journal) until I cleared out some currently active ones. I also encountered various other annoying glitches like my bank vault completely emptying itself randomly (which I’m told should be fixed in a patch), losing me tons of valuable resources, or followers getting stuck in terrain until I left and reentered the area. Nothing game breaking mind you, but annoying nonetheless.
Weird West is a fun not-quite-RPG that feels like the beginning of a great new franchise. Perfectly enjoyable to play, this first iteration lays a lot of groundwork towards what will likely become an ongoing series. Darkly funny and surprising, each character's story arc is unique and rewarding. While a system of branching choices impacting the game's story feels like a natural evolution from what is here, what is presented is very enjoyable. Weird West creates a universe I don't want to leave. When it was over, I just wanted more - which is the biggest hurdle a new franchise can overcome.
We tell you, it’s a good game! It’s not average! It might have some problems here and there, but you have to admit it is a “Good” game.
Playing in this Western sandbox is a joy when it is rewarding your exploration and moral choices with strange outcomes and interesting characters. A lack of late-game variety brings its flaws to the fore.
Weird West is an interesting isometric RPG that features unique setting, distinctive systems and a group of atypical heroes, each with their unique story, perspective and decisions.
Welcome to the Weird West. Where the Wild West meets strange, human-eating aliens, and outlaws and deadly animals are everywhere. I’ve spent the last week and a half fighting, shooting, horseback riding, and running for my life in this crazy version of the Wild West and I’m ready to make my final verdict. What a strange but deadly world. Think of it as a Diablo-esque version of the Wild West, but unfortunately, without the really cool weapons and armor.
Weird West doesn’t quite gel on every level, but it still makes for a fascinating and deep action RPG sure to entertain fans of the late-90s CRPGs.
