Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown goes to new heights not just for itself but for the action genre in games today. Its sharp presentation and gameplay make for a breathtaking experience that sticks with players long after they land on the runway. We have always fantasized about flying, but Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown doesn’t fly: It soars.

We are reaching the end of the Switch’s life cycle, and with that, the end of one of the most interesting kinds of games I’ve reviewed since the inception of this website: the “impossible Switch ports”. Games which, given the system’s underwhelming mobile-based horsepower, shouldn’t be able to run or be ported to it. In some cases, companies would shut me up, with amazing ports such as Doom, Wolfenstein II, The Witcher 3, and others. In other cases, well, logic would prevail, and ...

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown has a few annoying elements, but that doesn't take away from the fact that it's exactly what the series needed for a great comeback.

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown marks the first main entry in the long-standing franchise in over a decade. Before we start our Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown review, let’s make one thing clear first and foremost. While the game does not reinvent the proverbial wheel, it does bring the series back to its roots, and for most fans, that is the best thing that it could have done.

So, there you have it. I’m very happy with my planes wot go “whoosh”. The only reason I’m not giving it a Bestest Best badge is because it doesn’t do anything particularly new. It just does everything very well. Make no mistake, if you’ve played a game about shooting missiles at tiny trucks before, this will be familiar, these skies are not unknown, they are well-charted. But they’re excellent skies anyway. Dumb, funny, exhilarating, varied and full of stupid explosions. Like the drones it summons, Ace Combat 7 is not exactly self-aware. But it is close enough, judging from the...

Flight combat games are meant to offer close approximations to the feeling of being in a tense dogfight miles above the earth's surface, and once again, Ace Combat does not disappoint. The game's PSVR missions are particularly good in this regard; so good, in fact, that they even manage to outshine the considerably polished traditional gameplay mode. Series fans will no doubt enjoy all of the latest additions to the formula, particularly the weather effects and the two multiplayer offerings, but for a truly dazzling experience, the PSVR missions are hard to beat. It's not a game for everyone: The...

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown is the best entry in the series yet and provides a near-perfect blend of action and strategy. Those looking for something to fill the void of the long-gone After Burner series will like the quicker pace offered here. Longtime AC vets will love the quicker pace and increase on craft customization. Dogfights are a rewarding challenge and every part of the presentation is impressive. Its graphics are the best ever seen for a flight-based game and the soundtrack is outstanding too.

Spread over 20 missions, Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown puts you in the cockpit of modern, realistic fighter jets as Trigger, the game’s unseen protagonist. I’ve never played the previous titles in the Ace Combat series (it’s been around for decades) but I was able to quickly pick up the Campaign’s cliched but passable narrative basis – a fictional Earth-like world faces all-out war between the Osean, Usean and Erusian forces, and as an ace pilot, you’re sent on various missions that mostly involve aerial dogfights and taking out land-based targets.

Overall, Ace Combat 7 has hit the skies and it has been a smooth flight with little turbulence. Available now for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One for $59.99 USD and in February for PC. If you like games where flight is the main type of play then this game is for you. I love games like Elite Dangerous for its space combat and now I have Ace Combat 7 for my Air Combat.

With an approachable learning curve and a forgiving flight model, Air Combat 7: Skies Unknown welcomes players new to the franchise as well as veterans of previous versions. Beautiful graphics and fast-paced action are the very hallmarks of an Air Combat and number 7 delivers plenty of both.

When it’s firing on all cylinders, Ace Combat 7 absolutely soars as a return to form for a series thought dormant. It’ll be interesting to see how Bandai Namco might take things forward from here on, but for now, the series is flying high and steady once again.

That’s an issue that may arise on another day, though. At this moment in time, Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown is only really brought down by the occasional frustration felt upon the often unfair failure of a mission. Its campaign really is great overall, but sometimes you’ll curse when a timer imposed upon you expires when you’re just shy of meeting a score target. Or when a mission critical friendly plane gets shot down just as you’re about to dispatch the last enemy. You’ll always hit that “Retry From Checkpoint” option though and jump right back in, because Ace Combat...

It's been a while since we last made a trip to Strangereal on PlayStation. The Ace Combat series has a long and relatively complicated history of releases scattered across a wide range of formats, resulting in a somewhat fragmented state. Fans largely agree, however, that the PlayStation 2 entries - 4, 5, and Zero - are the collective high point, after which things began to stall and take a bit of a nosedive. With Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown, it's fair to say that Bandai Namco has brought its series back with a bang on PS4.

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown is a great-looking arcade flight combat game, and zipping over high-quality terrain trying to establish missile locks and evade pursuers can be a lot of fun. But the experience often gets weighed down by its weird and convoluted but persistent story and poor communication of objectives. It’s enough to prove that there’s room for the series to make a comeback, though this game will be not the one to jumpstart it.

As one of the few flight simulators that doesn’t require 40 hours of flying time to get licensed up and comfortable with the controls, Ace Combat has a lineage of being accessible with a great story to boot. It’s been a decade since players last got to fly the Osean skies (sorry, but Assault Horizon just doesn’t count) and many like myself have been waiting to go back. Now, players can finally get back in the seat of their favorite fighter jet once again in Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown.

Back in 1994 when Sony was entering the market with PlayStation, arcade gameplay was king. To that end it partnered with one of the greatest players on the scene, Namco. The result was three new franchises being Tekken, Ridge Racer and Ace Combat. Ultimately all of these franchises found their way into gaming DNA in their respective fields. Ace Combat itself so far has 17 games under its wing, but only six main canon games with the last being released in 2007.

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown is an adrenaline-filled thrill ride that soars high with excellently crafted dogfights, responsive controls, and payloads large enough to crack the planet in half. As your fighter rips through a narrow canyon in pursuit of a bogey with a death wish, Ace Combat 7 delivers top-tier intensity. In these moments, the music swells, your wingmen scream for immediate success, and if your rocket hits the mark, you feel like Luke Skywalker blowing up the Death Star. The battles often culminate in exciting and nerve-wracking ways, but not without some turbulence.
