Even with all the narrative-driven adventures out there, something about As Dusk Falls immediately caught my attention. Maybe it was the instantly eye-catching art design? Alright, sure, that was almost definitely what did the trick, but after watching the trailer I could tell that there was something more to the game than just a creative visual design. I got the sense that there was something of depth and substance to be found within its visual novel styled approach to storytelling. Now tha...

Despite having dull gameplay mechanics, As Dusk Falls is a thrilling narrative drama with an endearing cast.

Ever play a video game that makes you feel like you are watching a movie or a television show? As Dusk Falls blends the best of both worlds and gives you plenty to think about.

As Dusk Falls has the bones of a really great interactive narrative, especially when it comes to being able to review your web of decisions. Sadly, the bland writing, uninspired performances, and lack of any meaningful payoff keep it from reaching the heights of the classics it was inspired by. As Dusk Falls is available for $29.99 on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X | S and is available via Game Pass.

As Dusk Falls is a cracking crime thriller and feels like the exact thing we should be seeing on a regular basis from Xbox Game Studios on Game Pass. Its 6-8 hour length feels just right for a game of this nature, and that also makes it feel right at home on Xbox's subscription service. Oh, and the fantastic storyline that never let us wriggle free of its grip? Yeah, that's not a bad reason to play it on Game Pass either.

As Dusk Falls is a mixed bag. I really admire it for trying to tackle difficult subject matter head-on, and in fleeting moments it does this excellently. It has a fantastic voice cast that help bring the characters to life, but then it undoes all of its work with clichéd narrative beats and awkward, unrealistic moment-to-moment action. I'd gone in hoping for a groundbreaking style of narrative-driven experience, one that operated on a sprawling web of branching paths over the course of thirty years of events, and was left underwhelmed by a fairly by-the-numbers entry in the genre that only...

A tense and dramatic interactive movie with superbly realised characters, a breathless plot, and a still-frame animation style that’s likely to prove extremely divisive.

As Dusk Falls has a strong start and players will find the game hard to put down for the first two chapters, like a great binge-worthy TV show. Unfortunately, its pacing issues become apparent by the end of Book 1, and it never recovers in Book 2. Those wanting to check it out for themselves should note that As Dusk Falls is a day one Xbox Game Pass game, and so anyone still curious can try it out without making a financial commitment beyond what they already pay for their subscription.

As Dusk Falls is a memorable experience. The generation-spanning story is intriguing with its many twists and turns and too-human characters.

As Dusk Falls offers a great new take on the adventure genre, focusing on a story that feels grounded in the real world, made all the more impactful through its stellar artwork. The multiplayer works fine and is fun, but I found myself wanting to play without others. Satisfying narratively regardless of your choices, As Dusk Falls is weighty and serious, surprising with great writing, realistic characters, and plenty of twists. Highly recommended.

There is a great effort here from the developers to be as accessible as possible to all kinds of gamers, and they should be applauded for it. The options are numerous, from text to speech settings, on-screen UI options and additional helpful gameplay adaptions where things like QTE and choice timers can be extended, as well as great subtitle options and controller remapping. In short, it’s clear they want to enable as many people as possible to enjoy the game.

Each of the game’s six chapters takes roughly an hour to complete, though plan for a little extra time if you’re playing with a group. That said, As Dusk Falls offers up such a variety of outcomes for each character, you’ll likely be tempted to go back for a second round once everything wraps up. I went back to revisit a couple of pivotal moments after my co-op playthrough. That said, the replay value is stymied pretty significantly without the option to skip or rapidly advance dialogue you’ve already seen.

Decisions have unforeseen consequences. If one were to look for the thematic idea that links the story of As Dusk Falls with its gameplay structure, it’s hard to avoid that statement as a driving message. Life is filled with decisions big and small that shape the future, and we don’t always know how an errant word or turn down a different road might eventually conclude. Interior/Night’s emotionally rich and risky debut game isn’t interested in giving you the choice of how the character’s lives turn out; like in real life, that’s impossible to predict. Instead, the studio has crafted an...

We have a lot of gripes about As Dusk Falls, but we’ve still very much enjoyed our time with it. Its story will keep you hooked from start to finish, but some of its narrative gaps will leave you with questions. Should that keep you from playing? No – ultimately, this is a very well-executed narrative drama complete with excellent voice acting and a unique art style. Yes, it could have been better in many ways, but it’s still worthy of your time.

As Dusk Falls is an interactive drama that places you at the centre of an incredibly tense robbery gone wrong. Aside from some rare wooden dialogue, it's a touching tale of loss, betrayal, fear, and love that I hoped wouldn't end.

Story branching games are not new to the scene, and it’s no surprise to hear that your choices have consequences. But games rarely, if ever, touch on the mental trauma of the consequences, and how that affects the characters involved. As Dusk Falls presents a branching crime drama that is not just engaging, but gives a unique insight into the ramifications of the consequences.
