I haven’t even begun to cover the Covenant system or the in depth upgrading system that is apparent in all Souls games, but rest assured they’re in the game, as fleshed out as its predecessors. Expect to spend a lot of time experimenting with skills, builds and weapons in what could be Dark Souls’ best combat system to date.

Dark Souls III isn't revolutionary, but it's taken me on a ride I won't be forgetting anytime soon.

In a very short amount of time, the Souls series went from unknown underdog to cult hit to mainstream success. Does the newest game live up to its legacy and provide closure — or does it end horribly for the hero? Nevermind, that last part's just the nature of the beast.

Dark Souls III improves on its predecessors in nearly every way, making for the most masterfully-crafted, tautly-paced entry in the series. The combat is faster and more flexible, the world design is complex but never bloated, and the atmospheric presentation makes you feel like you're completely engulfed in the unsettling sights and sounds of this volatile fantasy world. Should this truly be the last time we seek respite in the warm glow of a bonfire, we can rest easy knowing Dark Souls III is a deserving and satisfying end to a phenomenal series.

Dark Souls 3 is going to be the most accessible game in the series, while still maintaining the brutal levels of difficulty and reliance on skill. If this is the end of the Dark Souls series, then they've chosen the perfect time to bow out.

All in all, if Dark Souls III is indeed the final chapter in the Dark Souls series, then at the very least, the game will go out with a supernova-sized bang. Multiple endings, hidden paths for the adventurous, optional bosses and levels, and a wealth of items to discover — despite its more forward linear progression, this might just be the most expansive Dark Souls game yet. Is Dark Souls III great? Yes. Is it better than its predecessors? That’s a debate that Souls fans are going to be having for years to come. Everything the previous games did well, this game does well, and the differentiator will be the game with the most varied character options and unique environments. If you’re a Souls fan, you should play this game, and if you haven’t yet dug into this nightmarish world, Dark Souls III is an excellent place to start.

If that's your thing, then this game has tens of hours of bliss in store for you. Marquis de Sade used to say that it is always by way of pain one arrives at pleasure, and Dark Souls III certainly takes this concept to the next level.

The Dark Souls games inspire an odd kind of fanaticism. From the outside in, it has often seemed childishly elitist to me. I’ve seen people highlight what appeared to be legitimate grumbles about director Miyazaki’s creations, only to be quickly countered by suggestions that they’re crap at games, or are too stupid to understand. “Boo hoo, baby wants someone to hold their hand?” It makes me think: well fuck Dark Souls then.

From Software’s Souls series has achieved the kind of cult status many game franchises can only dream of. The release of a new Souls game is a cultural moment that reverberates throughout the gaming industry – Internet message boards and comment sections are already filled with a mix of spoilers, speculation and intense anticipation. And after playing Dark Souls III, I can safely say the excitement is well deserved. Dark Souls III is brooding, moody, at times intensely depressing, but a glimmer of hope always remains. You will feel helpless, hopeless, lost and alone, but you will always strive to...
