Flawed, yes. Fun? Certainly. A total failure? Not really.

The hype around Destiny was always going to be toughest enemy to master. We take a look at how the game lives up to hype, but it might still be too hard to tell, right chief?

The game is very fun to play, and there is a lot to do after the you beat it. The main story is not as good as other Bungie games, but the lore itself can have some gamers hooked. The gameplay and soundtrack make the game what it is – unique. Bungie has succeeded again, and the game suffers virtually no problems. The issue with Destiny is that its not a bad game, but its also not a good game. Unlike Watchdogs it barely squeezes pass the dreaded 7/10 score because Destiny is legitimately fun. Just like in Halo Reach...

You are brought back from the dead in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. This could be the plot for any number of science fiction movies or novels but it’s the start to Bungie’s highly anticipated new intellectual property Destiny. Your Ghost, voiced by actor Peter Dinklage of Death at a Funeral and Underdog fame, prods you back to life and informs you that he needs your help.

Destiny is the type of game where there's a lot to enjoy if you make the most of it. Putting in an effort to coordinate with others to tackle certain bounties or challenges is just plain fun, and the story and other stuff isn't required for that sort of cooperative experience. That's where Destiny is at its best and where it can build from in expansions and sequels. As the launching pad for a new franchise however, Destiny ultimately feels incomplete, yet it's still a game we can easily recommend for shooter fans. At the time of this writing I've...

Destiny is far from a perfect game, with flaws quite clearly apparent in the storytelling and the repetitive formula, but it’s also a game that can quite easily keep you coming back for more time and again, especially if you play with friends. It’s a shame that some of the ideas in the Vault of Glass Raid couldn’t trickle down into the earlier stages, for more variety and intellectual challenge, but it does at least point to an exciting future for the game.

Destiny feels like the key elements of an FPS and an MMO gently resting shoulder to shoulder, instead of being fused together in a truly creative way. It plays and looks great, and offers many, many hours of entertainment to anyone okay with repeating the same tasks, but it isn’t exactly the game-changing science fiction epic we felt it was aspiring to. Fortunately, that doesn’t diminish the fact that there’s a fantastic social experience here, one that we hope will only improve further with future events and DLC. In our opinion, Destiny is at its absolute best when the odds...

Destiny’s faux-MMO approach to shooters is a shallow, dull experience that even hardcore fans may find difficult to stick with except to gaze at its worlds or engage in the entertaining competitive multiplayer.

Expectation can be something of a double-edged sword. One edge is the lovely everyone-wants-to-buy-our-game edge. The other is the everyone-thinks-this-game-is-something-that-it’s-not edge. It’s very possible that no game in the history of games typifies that more than Destiny.

Destiny is an engaging and immersive experience, albeit one that requires some serious legwork on the players half to get the most out of it. While I love it personally, I can't ignore the lack of direction given to players which robs them of all the game has to offer. At the same time, I fully recognize that this is something that is going to grow and evolve exponentially over its lifetime.

Bungie spared no expense to create a great looking mix of shooter and MMO, but high production value and pretty nice gameplay can’t hide that Destiny is just shallow, and it can’t live up to the hype.

Great expectations have followed Destiny since its announcement. As the latest brainchild from the Halo creators at Bungie, the game has garnered a level of anticipation only exceeded by the massive hype machine that declares its not-to-be-missed potential. Bungie’s new game is not as gigantic or revolutionary as that hype may have led some to believe. In fact, it has several features that feel like missteps or problems. But that doesn’t change the fact that the more I play it, the more I love it.

Simplistic “it’s like X mixed with Y” comparisons don’t really add up when attempting to explain what Destiny is, or why it’s worth playing. It borrows from many well-established gaming destinations, but the climate of each is wildly different, and often incompatible. It’s a complex production that boils down simply to this: Destiny is a mechanically excellent, visually evocative FPS housed within an under-developed RPG framework. The endgame might hook you for the long haul once you fully understand it, but Destiny is ultimately unable to be all the different games it’s trying so hard to be. IGN received access...
