EA Sports UFC 3 is the best the series has ever looked, sounded or played and, despite a small handful of minor shortcomings, is quite simply the best UFC title to date and a very real contender for the fighting game throne in 2018.

EA UFC 3 is EA's best UFC game yet, and while there a lot of improvements, there are still some things like the ground game and the career mode that still could use some fine tuning.

Overall, EA Sports UFC 3 is a great game let down by some modes that just don’t entertain as much as they should. If you have the patience to click through menu after menu or grind for cards then this is undoubtedly the best UFC game ever made. But if you want to fight without having to do busywork you’re likely to end up abandoning the career and Ultimate Team modes to focus on those that just let you enjoy the crisp controls, accomplished graphics and exciting combat. Then, you’re sure to be dazed by EA Sports UFC 3‘s authenticity.

When the issues of a game are rolled and stomped by its greatness, then it’s something to invest on if you have some spare.

EA UFC 3 is a good representation of the sport franchise, offering a well put together fighting game that represents the different styles and weight classes found in MMA. The action in the octagon mimics reality very well, with a decent career mode helping people to learn the ropes. On the online front, there’s a divide between Ultimate Team and standard online divisions with the latter winning out in both accessibility and fairness. If you’re a UFC fan in general, then this is a good game to pick up.

EA Sports UFC 3 quickly sets the tone as soon as you load it up for the first time with its cover star Conor McGregor, introducing you to the games tough striking mechanics and splicing together real world footage with visuals from the game itself to stylish effect. EA has never pulled any punches (sorry) when it comes to its presentation, and UFC 3 is certainly no exception. Fans will appreciate the initial fantasy match-up of McGregor versus Tony Ferguson that allows you to get gritty in a ...

UFC as a sport is probably the closest thing we'll ever get to a real-life fighting game. In fact, I don't think most fighting games are anywhere near as brutal as UFC is, unless you include Mortal Kombat. Being a huge fan of fighting games, I was really looking forward to experiencing what UFC 3 had to offer. Having only played UFC for a handful of hours mashing buttons against my brothers, learning how to play properly, creating my own fighter and actually winning some matches based on skill rather than luck was an attractive prospect.

Even beyond its merits as a faithful video game recreation of the combat sport, it's just a darn good video game that is hugely satisfying in its own right- and that, I think, is EA Sports UFC 3's greatest achievement.

Even with simplified grappling and submission controls carried over from the last edition, EA Sports UFC 3 is probably the least pick-up-and-play game in the sports genre. It takes real dedication, and understanding of one’s fighter, to draw out the game’s virtues. But they can be found in the anticlimax of a career bout that ends in a fraction of the time spent training for it. For those who can take a staggering punch and remain focused on their game plan, EA Sports UFC 3 is as close as it comes to professional fighting, without the bruises and welts.

EA went back to the gym with UFC 3 to work on many of the weaknesses that had the previous two games struggling to find their footing. A fantastic new striking system and a much-improved career mode lead the charge, but UFC 3 is still hamstrung by a cumbersome ground game, weird collision issues, and the straight-up terrible Ultimate Team Mode. It’s still not a knockout, but Round 3 is UFC’s best yet.

Brimming with modes, UFC 3 is a massive game. It might only be an incremental improvement over its predecessor, but the gameplay remains stellar and the action is accessible and fun. As far as MMA games go, EA Sports UFC 3 is the G.O.A.T.

The pros far outweigh the cons, though. The heart of the game is in its fighting and that’s as good as it’s ever been. Skilled and dedicated players will find it very rewarding, and casual players can dial the difficulty down to enjoy a smoother ride. EA Sports UFC 3 has something for every MMA-loving gamer. It’s virtual face punching at its finest.

Slowly but surely the EA Sports UFC series has managed to gradually improve with each offering. The first title offered a solid base, and the sequel revamped the ground game. Now on its third title, it seemed like everything was in place for a content-deep offering that really catered to mixed martial arts fans. Instead, EA Sports UFC 3 feels like yet another gradual step forward rather than a revolution.

UFC 3 very well may be EA's best release in the series, but it's only by a small margin that they've improved on their previous effort.
