Hironobu Sakaguchi and Nobuo Uematsu team up again for Fantasian Neo Dimension, which has a lot to live up to. A lot of gameplay mechanics and varied bosses come at the player, but how well does this comeback fight turn out?

Fantasian Neo Dimension is a great love letter to JRPGs, particularly ones that come from creator Hironobu Sakaguchi’s past such as Lost Odyssey and Final Fantasy. Its characters weave together a story worth experiencing with a battle system that accentuates it by providing enjoyable yet challenging turn-based fare. Wrapped around it all is impressive hand-crafted dioramas and the last full soundtrack from the legendary Nobou Uematsu, Fantasian Neo Dimension should be experienced by any JRPG fan.

Fantasian Neo Dimension may suffer from a hefty grind, a control oddity, and a rather tropey story, but it also shines in ways that made the now-retro RPGs so special. Combine the dioramic backdrops with engaging combat and just enough modernization without going too far away from its retro inspirations, and Fantasian practically demands that all RPG fans give it a chance.

Fantasian Neo Dimension is a little like Japanese role playing game comfort food. There's the slightly androgynous amnesiac hero. He'll go on a quest to reclaim his memories and along the way he'll meet up with a slightly kooky orphan mage with secrets of her own to uncover. They'll befriend the sassy princess, the lovable rogue, the comic relief, and more. Together they'll discover that there's a world, nay, universe-ending threat on the horizon, and only they have the means to stop it.

FANTASIAN Neo Dimension takes the classic RPG formula and instead of modernizing it so much that it loses its roots, it embraces what made the genre so good and elevates it with QoL features. Add to that an unforgettable cast, a terrific story, and a fantastic soundtrack, and you have a recipe for success from start to finish.

Fantasian Neo Dimension takes all the great things about classic JRPGs and finds ways to innovate on them while still keeping the innate charm and feel the genre is known for. And while there have been plenty of great RPG releases in recent years, there’s something special about Fantasian Neo Dimension that melds the old with the new to create an enthralling and nostalgic journey in a unique high-fantasy world that’s simply a ton of fun to play.

Taking the time to farm elemental resistant accessories, equipment upgrades, and stronger skills, setting up your party loadout just so at a save point, then watching your team get ragdolled anyway all while you’re several levels above what the game says you need completely overshadows the effort put into the careful, puzzle-like design of each boss. Which is a shame, because if those fights weren’t so egregiously overtuned in such an unproductive way, the stuff actually holding up Fantasian’s systems would’ve really shined. The criticism from before clearly had an impact, but even with the adjustments there’s still moments where...

With Fantasian, it’s clear that Sakaguchi wanted to take a hard look at the key games that have defined his work, namely Final Fantasy VI, and find a meaningful way to advance his craft — to create something that can appeal to both the old guard and brand-new fans. In my mind, he and Mistwalker have wildly succeeded in that endeavor, creating one of the defining RPGs of modern gaming. It’s an enthralling experience that reminds me why I love video games so much and simultaneously makes me excited for where they can go in the future.

Since Hironobu Sakaguchi left Square Enix to create his own development studio, Mistwalker, the Final Fantasy series has never been the same. Although debating the quality of individual titles past the ninth entry in the series, the last the franchise's creator worked on, has never produced an actual consensus, there's no denying that the little spark that made Final Fantasy one of the most loved Japanese role-playing game series ever made went away together with the series creator.

Fantasian Neo Dimension is a great JRPG that gracefully blends old-school sensibilities with some fresh new ideas and features. There are some issues here and there, such as awkward controls, but overall this is a gripping adventure and a must-play for those who fondly remember the Final Fantasy games of the 90s.

After three years that felt like an eternity, Fantasian, the RPG from Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi has ended its Apple Arcade exclusivity. Now, re-released on all modern consoles and PC with more content in FANTASIAN Neo Dimension, more than a select few fans can finally engage in the magical adventure. As someone waiting for such platform exclusivity to end before I jumped in, I am delighted to say that FANTASIAN is well worth the wait.

In the end, Fantasian Neo Dimension is still a solid offering from Mistwalker, one that brought back memories of classic RPGs I played decades prior, including those featuring work from Sakaguchi and Uematsu. References and callbacks abound, though there are still refreshing concepts to keep you engaged for dozens of hours, including a secret dungeon and a new game plus mode. Just watch out for the annoying camera movements all throughout and the ridiculous number of encounters toward the later portion of the game.

Fantasian: Neo Dimension is a modern take on the RPG formula. In many ways, it's similar to classic Final Fantasy games, but elements such as the trajectory aspect of battles and the Dimengeon help distinguish it from other titles the developers have previously worked on. The Dimengeon is an especially welcome addition to slow down the interruption that random encounters provide. The battles are enjoyable as they do require strategic planning, though playing on Hard difficulty can result in especially rough difficulty spikes later on. The rewarding battle system is complemented by the fantastic soundtrack and engaging story, reminiscent of...
