Fire Emblem: Three Houses is the best Fire Emblem game since 2005’s Path of Radiance. Players who skipped Shadows of Valentia may find a lot of things strange and different at first, but it all fits together so well that it starts to feel natural pretty quickly. Even if you don’t know what you’re doing in the beginning, you can still succeed and enjoy playing in the long run. The story is fascinating, the characters are lovable and entertaining, and the presentation is great.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses excels in almost every aspect. The combat feels fresh and extremely fun. Meanwhile, the story will keep you engaged all the way to the end of its duration. It's just so close to total perfection, were it not for the lacking difficulty and the average performance on the Switch.

Three houses stand together, but when they fall apart, sides must be taken. Will the long awaited return to consoles for the Fire Emblem series be worth the wait?

Fire Emblem has come a long way in the last 15 years. The series' humble beginnings on the Famicom and beyond are mostly lost among fans of the franchise outside of Japan, but I've been following it, like many fans, since the first few localized games on the Gamecube and Game Boy Advance. Since then the series has essentially looked be to be near-canceled and had a miraculous recovery which skyrocketed it to be one of Nintendo's biggest and most important IPs. And while the most hardcore fans have plenty of complaints when it comes to the direction of the...

It’s not an understatement to say the latest entry into the Fire Emblem series, Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a meaty one. At a somewhat rapid pace, my first house – the Golden Deer – still took just about 45 hours. Pick from the Black Eagles, Blue Lions and Golden Deer, and as their professor – default name, Byleth, appearance non-customizable – train up your students for battle. You can recruit students from the other two houses, and pick up the various staff at the Garreg Mach ...

Three Houses offers one of the best stories in the Fire Emblem series since its revival on 3DS. The characters are all brilliantly written and none ever feel like their conversations fall flat. Every story element seems well thought out and the mysteries that get uncovered along the way are always surprising. Combat feels satisfying as ever with all the new mechanics and there's a great amount of variety for players to try out or experiment with characters. It feels like a true return to form for the series where story and characters make the biggest impact in order to...

Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a fantastic entry in the series, and has quickly become one of my favorite RPGs of the modern era.

I cannot stress enough how much Fire Emblem: Three Houses exemplifies the “RPG” part of the acronym “SRPG.” While strategy is indubitably a large part of Fire Emblem‘s DNA, the vast majority of my enjoyment was found having lunch with classmates and getting to know them better, or doing errands while running around the lovely academy grounds. This is a world you can absolutely lose yourself to for months on end, but if you find menus tedious, you might be reticent to the modern relationship-heavy Fire Emblem formula that’s cemented in Three Houses.

Ever since Fire Emblem made it to the cool kid’s table and finally got big in the west, there has been many an argument over the series’ newer features. While some dislike the new focus on character relationships and anime-like designs, others would never have picked up the games without them. With such a large divide between fans,  I held dubious hope that Fire Emblem: Three Houses would manage to satisfy both sides of the schism.

A very ambitious game with thorough lore and interesting characters, although it won't often challenge you if you are familiar with strategy RPGs.

With the Switch’s delightful dual abilities, Three Houses fittingly bookends the series’ triumphant run on the 3DS and becomes the first big-screen outing in over a decade. It also surpasses them all. A masterpiece of strategy, story-telling and intertwining relationships, Three Houses deserves to make Intelligent Systems a household name.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses is… a lot. That’s about the best way I can describe this game after sinking nearly 100 hours into this deceptively deep and massive tactical RPG. And the best (and maybe scariest?) part is that I feel like I’ve only seen maybe half of what this epic plot has to offer.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses succeeds in its ambitious telling of a land at war helmed by captivating leaders, in which no side has all the answers. Its tense battles are made all the more harrowing thanks to new strategy elements, and the colorful cast of troops you send into the fray are incredibly charming. With a new take on training and bonding with your units, and the many activities and options available to sample, it’s absolutely begging to be played multiple times.

Despite its minor shortcomings, the game still offers over 100s of hours of gameplay that can serve as an excellent way for the tactically minded players out there to get their strategy fix. Players are also rewarded for their time, and those that take advantage of everything on offer and use the new systems to their advantage will excel and become masters of the battlefield.
