Halo: The Master Chief Collection is one of my favorite videogames of all time. It cannot be stated just how incredible the work that 343 Industries and multiple other studios have put into it over the past 5+ years to get it here. Any future compilation of titles should look to this as the benchmark for what a collection of beloved titles should be. If you like first-person shooters, love Halo, have never played Halo, or anything in-between then you would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn’t give this collection a try. Halo: The Master Chief Collection is...

Overcoming its deserved reputation after a notorious launch, today the Halo Master Chief Collection is a polished, super-deluxe package of content that successfully links three generations of amazing Halo games together in a way that feels like it was made by and for people who care deeply about this legendary shooter franchise. The enhancements to the campaigns make it a joy to replay Master Chief’s story (and two other UNSC tales as well), but it’s the now-smooth multiplayer that’s worth coming back to over and over again. It’s not just a collection of some of the best first-person shooters ever...

This year has been a surprisingly great year for Halo. We got our first decent look at Halo Infinite with the Chief’s more classic design returning. We celebrated the 10th anniversary of Halo 3 ODST and now we have the return of my personal favourite Halo game: Halo Reach.

I’ve convinced myself a few years back that Killzone was the best shooter, but I never thought that it would change until I got to play Halo. It’s not that Killzone is never going to be great as Halo, it’s just that Halo’s universe and lore have kept me engaged, and it had also a lot to offer. Even if it did have its fair share of bugs and some graphical glitches, it doesn’t have any negative impact of how great this franchise is. You better get your hands on The Master Chief Collection if you just bought your Xbox...

HD remakes have been all the craze for the last few years or so, with publishers keen to make a bit of extra money on the side by targeting our nostalgia glands – that’s not a real gland, but it certainly feels like it. That statement is as applicable more than ever with the launch of the next generation consoles. When it comes to Microsoft specifically, they set a new standard with their “Anniversary” editions in recent years, and with the launch of Halo: The Master Chief Collection,...

The Master Chief Collection is a glorious tribute to Spartan warrior who has become one of the most iconic symbol in video games today. Playing through these legendary games in glorious high definition and 60 frames per second is the only way to experience these treasures. While the launch has been rocky, The Master Chief remains on the most prominent figures in video games today and it was because of these game that he skyrocketed. Whether you’re a fan or not, if you own an Xbox One you owe it to yourself to play The Master Chief Collection.

If it weren't for the multiplayer options, The Master Chief Collection would have garnered a much lower score. The multiplayer suite is truly the saving grace of this package and worth the price of admission alone.

Whatever else might be in included in the Master Chief Collection, that feeling is at the heart of the game: it is a remembrance of things past, and those things are not as they were. The Collection is an instantaneous embrace of past and present that combines gaming's powerful sense of nostalgia with its perpetual arms race of processing and graphical power. It is part of a growing appreciation of the past in a medium which until recently was resolutely forward-looking. Proust would bloody love it.

They say the number 13 can be unlucky. Heck, you rarely, if ever, see the number 13 on elevators. Why am I mentioning this you ask? Well, it’s been 13 years since the original Xbox hit store shelves and an unproven franchise, called Halo: Combat Evolved, launched with it. This 1-2 punch found its way into millions of homes and Halo became a gamer’s game. For me personally, Halo is what got me into first person shooters, as I had never played them on PC. I had always been a console gamer, and I know others who are in the...

Halo is an important staple in my appreciation of video games. It taught me that moving a giant tube television and an Xbox to a friend’s house for a few hours for LAN multiplayer was absolutely worth the effort. It was a bonding exercise with the neighbors and roommates of my college dorm, and online multiplayer helped us stay connected when we moved apart. It’s a series I enjoy for its solid mechanics, fleshed out universe and story, and for its ability to bring people together. This collection includes all four core Halo games, perfectly encapsulating what the series has...

While I think I would have given up playing a Halo 2 remaster on its own after a few months, The Master Chief Collection will keep me busy for quite a while. The sheer number of maps, variants, playlists, and rulesets will keep me interested for months on end. I can already envision myself joining groups of friends who only like particular games, forming separate communities within the collection. Not only that, but this is also the perfect way to replay each campaign if I ever get the itch instead of finding multiple discs. This is the new gold standard...

The Master Chief Collection is a lovingly pieced together, faithful collection of games that changed the industry and multiplayer modes that created a new way to play. The attention to detail is a delight and each game still holds up, especially with the remastering of the two older titles, so there’s potential for this release to introduce Master Chief to a whole new generation.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection has a handful of quirks and legacy issues, but those don't diminish the achievement. It's a stellar collection of some of the best games of the last few generations, with options galore and clever ideas like Playlists to breathe new life into old content. It's a must-have for Halo fans, and may rightly serve as a satisfying introduction for newcomers.

The Master Chief Collection’s campaign element appears to be fully functional, so players aren’t totally locked out of the experience the game is offering. But until 343 manages to make it multiplayer functional, our recommendation of the MCC has become considerably more qualified.
