Destroying large robot beasts while frantically switching between weapons is intoxicating, but the strength of Horizon Zero Dawn is in Aloy's engaging quest to find out who she really is.

Go on a memorable sci-fi safari as you hunt down robotic big game.

Horizon Zero Dawn is gorgeous and innately playable, even if the open-world gameplay it presents will feel overly familiar to most. The port has some issues that will almost certainly get stamped out in short order and the gameplay has its fair share of frustrations, but anyone looking to stalk some robots will find plenty to like.

Horizon Zero Dawn is a technical masterpiece that fully realises the amazing premise of primal tribesmen clashing with robot dinosaurs in a post post-apocalyptic world.

The studio previously known for it’s first person shooter’s, Guerilla Games, has certainly made their way by going outside of the box to develop a stunning world with unique story driven on a woman’s journey and development! This game has comes with a challenge but if you’re up for it, Horizon Zero Dawn, is quite a journey to take and I would suggest this game to anyone looking for a beautifully sculpted open-world game with endless fun through combat and exploration.

Horizon is a game that you can get truly immersed in. The story is roughly 25-30 hours long and to be honest that’s nothing in comparison to how much more gameplay there is. If you incorporate Bandit camps, side quests and other character building events from the game, there is probably well over 100 hours of gameplay there. That is without all of the time you will spend fighting machines for fun, because the combat system is just that good. I never felt like I couldn’t take on an enemy, but I always needed to have my wits about me for every combat situation. All of the machines attack in different ways and so you always have to prepare yourself for different kinds of combat. The human enemies are pretty easy to kill and are not particularly intelligent by any means. Sadly it is quite difficult to take a stealthy approach to playing as there is no way to move dead bodies and so the AI will generally stumble upon someone you have killed and realise you are there. The game also has an override mechanic, which lets you take control of other machines to either, use as a mount or help you in combat. Like most open world games Horizon has a skill tree. You gain skill points from levelling up and from completing quests. The skill tree is extremely accessible and not at all difficult to understand. As a whole I think this game can be considered a true masterpiece in modern gaming. Horizon is a game that will be talked about for years to come and I for one never want to stop playing.

Not for a long time has a game managed to draw me into the world and the lore in the same way as Horizon Zero Dawn. Guerrilla’s perfect execution, attention to detail and imagination shines through in every aspect of this stunning title; from the attention to visual detail, to the deep lore and flowing controls and combat. Horizon Zero Dawn is a defining game for 2017 which is made all the more impressive by it’s origin as a brand new IP.

For thirteen years, Guerrilla Games have been tied to the Killzone IP. I'll never hide the fact that I'm not a fan of Killzone. It also left me with a perception of Guerrilla that was all wrong. I'd come to believe they couldn't make anything other than a generic FPS. They were stuck repeating themselves in one single franchise. As with every studio, I wanted them to branch out and make something, anything fresh. Something new. Welcome to Horizon Zero Dawn, the game that makes it all worth it.

In the future, giant robotic beasts roam the Earth, and the tribal human clans that remain have to survive amongst them. How does this new, PlayStation 4 exclusive stack up against its competition, and is Horizon Zero Dawn a game that people should purchase a PS4 for? Find out in the review below.

I got on the hype train early for this one, and I must say that Guerrilla Games delivers a nearly flawless gem of a game. Horizon: Zero Dawn is an exceptional title from start to finish and is an absolute must for any gamer, old or new.

A few poor decisions are the only things holding back Horizon Zero Dawn. It's a great game in every sense of the word, but poor fundamental RPG mechanics stop it becoming something fantastic. Let's hope they get it right in the sequel.

Those little, plastic, clip-together robo-dinosaur things from the ‘80s that you’d wind-up and send marching across a table at whatever other toys you had knocking around at the time?

“Video game critics are jaded and bitter and hate everything” – A sentiment I’ve heard more times than I can count that I’m here to put to rest. Sure, critiquing games can be a grind but remember that the vast majority of us were gamers first, me included. In the case of Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Zero Dawn, the hype train left the station at full speed immediately after it was revealed. Guess what? I was driving that locomotive and set it to full throttle. That’s why I’m ecstatic to say the hype was all real. This is one of the best games to ever grace not only your PlayStation 4 but gaming in general.

Horizon Zero Dawn is a bit of a slow burn, but there’s more to Guerrilla Games’ latest than just its staggeringly pretty graphics. The story surprises as it takes several twists and turns and explores the past, but the game’s beating heart is with its excellently tense and engaging robotic monster hunting.

Across a vast and beautiful open world, Horizon Zero Dawn juggles many moving parts with polish and finesse. Its main activity - combat - is extremely satisfying thanks to the varied design and behaviors of machine-creatures that roam its lands, each of which needs to be taken down with careful consideration. Though side questing could have been more imaginative, its missions are compelling thanks to a central mystery that led me down a deep rabbit hole to a genuinely surprising - and moving - conclusion.

Dark Souls, Far Cry Primal (or any open world Ubisoft game), Uncharted – these are just a few of the games players will cite when finding points of comparison for Horizon: Zero Dawn. But the Guerrilla Games developers have made sure that its game still feels unique by comparison, thanks to a vibrant world bursting with stunning detail, challenging robotic enemies, and a story that explores an uncivilized world in an inventive way. Some weak AI, awkward dialogue sections, and a prototypical open world framework are the game's bigger faults, but they don't weigh the game down to much or ruin the experience. When all is said and done, Horizon: Zero Dawn could easily be Sony’s next great franchise, but even as a one-off it’s very impressive.
