Koei Tecmo's Omega Force studio returns to Hyrule for a second time, this entry acting as a prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Though some things have changed, there's still a very familiar feeling.

If you enjoyed Breath of the Wild’s story and characters, and like musou games, this is a great combination of the two that’s worth checking out.

Hyrule Warriors: The Age of Calamity is a great addition to the warriors series of games if you enjoy battling huge mobs of enemies. Featuring great character development for Zelda and doesn’t require playing Breath of the Wild to enjoy. The local co-op is great, but sorely absent in the Divine Beast missions.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, you had one job. One job that defined and justified your entire existence. Deliver on one the most interesting parts of Breath of the Wild, and for me one of the most interesting tales in the franchise. Tell the story about how one hundred years prior, prophecy and tradition finally failed Hyrule. About how everything went Crisis Core: Legend of Zelda Edition. It would have been an epic tale of failure, death, and yet ending with a ray of hope. This was the g...

Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity delivers on many grounds, delving deeper into the story of Breath of the Wild while also going and delivering a deeper take on the tale. Its combat is solid and you’ll have fun testing out the various characters that arrive to help you.

It might even be perfect if Link were more than just a generic vessel of badassery. He could be the strong and silent type like Master Chief from Halo, communicating with the same ruthless efficiency he uses to slaughter countless Covenant and Flood. He could even be strange and quirky, but brave and strong like Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII Remake. Literally anything would be more interesting — at least to me — than this lazy blank slate.

As a Musou game, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is enjoyable. Narratively, on the other hand, it pulls every punch and is completely underwhelming as a prequel to Breath of the Wild.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity has left our reviewer, Jason, conflicted. On one hand it's one of the most efficient uses of Musou formula, but he can't help be feel it could have stuck its landing better. Here's our review of the latest offering from Nintendo.

The game tells a fascinating story that goes from incredibly dire to incredibly heart-warming with everything in between. It has more depth than I would have ever expected from a title like this and has more than enough content to keep you playing for a very long time. While there are a few small tweaks that could be made, I’m just very happy that I got to revisit this version of Hyrule, something that doesn’t happen too often in the world of The Legend of Zelda.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is a heck of a Warriors game and a fantastic love letter to Breath of the Wild and Zelda in general.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is a ton of fun, but handicaps itself with the occasionally abysmal frame pacing, wonky camera, and design of later missions. Still, it’s the perfect accompaniment to Breath of the Wild and well worth your time.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is a welcome surprise that gives players a brand new way to enjoy their time in Breath of the Wild's Hyrule with fun, fast-paced gameplay. It takes the good of the original and remixes it for an adventure that won't soon be forgotten. The story gives more life to characters that we didn't have before in Breath of the Wild while also offering an entirely new perspective on events from many years in the past. Anyone looking for a story that's been shaken up or just looking to scratch that itch for more fast-paced gameplay...

“Age of Calamity offers a top-notch Zelda story with surprisingly varied hack-and-slash combat.”

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity brings some of the same “Warriors” baggage along with it, but as someone who was always into these Omega Force romps, the juice was worth the squeeze. The story was genuinely enthralling throughout and it serves as a great companion piece for Breath of the Wild, while forging its own identity in many respects. I suspect a lot of the alterations are going to be controversial, but I like that they took some big swings and really went with it.

The success of the first Hyrule Warriors game, released in 2014 on the WiiU, was somewhat unexpected. It was a completely different genre than the series standard, and seemed to be a celebration of the Legend of Zelda series as a whole. It was a game for the fans, and not only did it succeed as a loving tribute, but it was also a damn fine game. I don’t want to think about how many hours total I have put into the original WiiU title, its updated 3DS port Hyrule Warriors: Legends, and the De...
Read Full ReviewFrom the moment you take control of Link in Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity, you’re thrown into a large scale battle taking place on the grassy plains that surround Hyrule Castle. The battlefield, teeming with literally hundreds of Bokoblins, is chaotic and intimidating. And so you’ll hack and slash your way through, using what feels like a ridiculous combination of button mashing and joystick thrashing with the bodies of your slain foes literally hurtling through the air in your wake bef...

For many, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was a revelation. Nintendo smartly rethought old conventions and delivered an adventure that felt new while holding true to the spirit of the series. I put almost 200 hours into Nintendo’s open-world epic, and after I’d put the controller down for the last time, I was hungry for even more. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity delivers that "even more" while we wait for the true sequel. It’s far from a revelation, but it is an adequate diversion.

Ultimately, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is a treat for both Warriors fans and those who adore The Legend of Zelda series. It may not have the puzzles of a traditional Zelda game, but it packs in an obscene amount of action to make up for it. Throw in a story that will have you gripped as well as the usual Zelda charm, and you have a game that will keep you glued to the screen for tens of hours. Those who have played and loved Breath of the Wild will get a kick out of it the most though....
Read Full ReviewIt’s a shame that exploration and freedom have to take a back seat, and I could do without so much padding in side levels. That said, take a cornucopia of familiar Hyrule lands, add an absolutely fantastic soundtrack to each of them, and let a collection of amazing characters loose to tell a great story on the battlefield and off, and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is a game no Zelda or Musou fan should pass up.

The big reason for Zelda fans to invest in Age of Calamity--the story--is its biggest letdown, but there's a decent Musou game here for everyone else.

Musou, or Warriors games, get something of a bad rap among gamers. Reactions towards the latest Hyrule Warriors title were fairly mixed, with some people losing interest the moment they found out it was a Warriors game at all. I’m here to tell you that those people are wrong. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is a Zelda title first and foremost. While the Warriors bones are quite visible, Nintendo and Koei Tecmo have managed to make something uniquely compelling out of these disparate components.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild isn’t just one of the better entries in this storied series - it’s also one of the greatest games of all time. To this end, the mission of living up to its inspiration is perhaps impossible for Age of Calamity. It is nevertheless successful at what it sets out to do, however - providing a fun, interesting and exciting new adventure that fans of that game will surely enjoy. It won’t stay your appetite for Breath of the Wild 2 - but it’ll keep you occupied happily enough all the same.

With the announcement of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, I was convinced that Nintendo had begun a new Zelda canon centered around The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Nintendo had, at last, glanced over the lengthy and confusing Zelda timeline, and have decided to pick and choose the most worthwhile aspects of that universe and create an original timeline with all the features you adore, in a brand new setting. Creating a revolving canon around Breath of the Wild is a solid choice. Well, after a swift 25 hours of playing Age of Calamity, I'm no longer convinced...

It's been over 6 years since the original Hyrule Warriors released and here's Age of Calamity which ties in with Breath of the Wild.
Read Full ReviewHyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity offers a welcome trip back to a world I’ve clocked hundreds of hours in. Its hugely varied roster of characters, solid combat mechanics, fun progression and clever adaptation of Breath of the Wild’s vision of Hyrule is a joy to play and discover. While there are some missed characterisation opportunities, Age of Calamity is still a blast from start to finish.
