Layers of Fear (2023) is a solid compilation of two decent horror titles. It is a massive graphical upgrade that uses a new narrative to tie them together in a satisfying way. Releasing at $30 MSRP if you haven’t played the games before and love to get creeped out then this one is well worth checking out.

Virtual Reality is both perfect for horror games and uniquely unsuited for the genre. You’re immediately immersed, with every stray noise and light flicker raising your heart rate. On the other hand, technical limitations can quickly pull you out of the simulation, reminding you that everything is going to be fine after all. Layers of Fear VR does its best to skirt these hurdles, stumbling on certain hard limits while easily spiking your adrenaline from the jump. While I swung from scared to annoyed quite regularly, the experience ultimately scratches that horror itch.

An atmosphere which is not that spooky or terrifying but... quite strange, disturbing, literally "creepy." Layers of Fear 2 is not the Polish P. T., but a Polish TP. “T” for Twin, and “P” for Peaks.

Layers of Fear was a surprise from Bloober Team, a developer with quite the history. Needless to say, nobody expected them come out with a first-person psychological horror title after their psuedo-horror Bomberman clone (and all of the drama surrounding that development). The first Layers of Fear dove into the deranged mind of an artist as he spiraled out of control and into madness. The sequel plays up that idea, this time peeling back the layers in the mental state of an actor as he explores his past, present, and potential futures.

Although less scary than the previous game, Layer of Fear 2 is a beautiful but chilling game with wonderful writing and voice-acting. It maintains pieces of the first game that many loved while changing enough so that it doesn't feel repetitive.

Layers of Fear 2 is a fascinating horror game that centers on exploring a mysterious ship and its ever-changing layout. It isn't the scariest game, but the unsettling nature of everything you encounter more than makes up for it. The constant environmental changes designed to mess with you are amazing and one of the best aspects.

When I started Layers of Fear 2, I was thrust into what looked like a hotel corridor that was flooding. Where was I? Did I miss something important? But then I picked up a mirror and received my first jump scare.

Bloober Team is a studio that knows a thing or two about the spectrum of opinion. After launching its 2016 hit Layers of Fear, the Polish developer fell well wide of the mark a year later with its own version of cyberpunk. We didn’t take to Observer in the slightest, but fast-track two years and the team is returning to what put it on the map. Layers of Fear 2 is a grander and more boisterous sequel, hampered only somewhat by its lack of genuine scares.

Heavy on references and old-style scares, this sequel lacks its own horror identity.

Layers of Fear 2 is one of the best pure horror games I've played in some time. Bloober Team has created a title that pushes common horror tropes aside for something more fascinating and exciting. While I ultimately left unsatisfied with my first run, the journey to the end was a hell of a ride that had me uneasy in the best ways the entire time.

Carried by hauntingly beautiful writing and an unsettling atmosphere, Layers of Fear 2 is one of the most stunning horror games of this generation. Using classic film and a descent into madness as its anchor, its rich ocean liner setting changes at every turn, producing constant unease in just the right way. With unique puzzles and expert pacing, Layers of Fear 2 is a harrowing and consistently exciting endeavor.

Artistic pursuit in something that must not be taken lightly. An artist pours all of his heart and soul into his or her creation, and this act may bring to light things that are better left in the dark. Some, however, aim to see how far they can go in the pursuit of artistic perfection, unleashing unspeakable horror not only on the world but on themselves as well. This is the story of the actor who stars in Layers of Fear 2.

Layers of Fear 2 ups the ante from the original game's haunted house simulator style of horror, but that still leaves it all feeling too scripted to instill any real sense of dread.
