Little Nightmares II is a must-play for any fans of indie sensations Limbo and Inside. If you've yet to play the first game, it's not necessary, per se, but is wholly recommended. Having played the first game, one can appreciate how much Little Nightmares II builds upon its predecessor. It's gloomy, gruesome, ghastly, but downright intoxicating.

Little Nightmares II then – a grimy, grotesque and greasy journey through a city of nightmares, it’s inhabitants a collection of melted skin and incorrect proportions, a twisted take on the world around us, with everything good and pure buried under an all powerful darkness. A journey worth not just experiencing, but one you deserve to survive through too. Will you be able to recall all the details once you’ve woken up? Probably – but you may not want to do so. Not yet. Let the nightmare fade first. Let the light come back in.

Despite some annoying glitches, Little Nightmares 2 is a game any horror fan should play. The controls are simplistic, but the puzzles and enemies provide plenty of challenge. While still charming, the horror feels darker, and the themes will have you thinking for a long time after you finish the game. While you won’t need to play the first game to understand the events of Little Nightmares 2, any fan of the series will have fun piecing together how these two games connect.

I passed on Little Nightmares back in 2017, thinking it more of a puzzle game than anything else. If Little Nightmares 2 is any indication, Bandai Namco’s newest franchise is more akin to Playdead’s grotesque side-scrolling titles like Limbo and Inside, with puzzle solving elements from Unravel and Brothers thrown in for good measure.

LITTLE NIGHTMARES 2 REVIEW FOR PC, PS5, PS4, XBOX SERIES X|S, AND XBOX ONE. While the first game provided an excellent introduction to The Maw and its grotesque patrons, that was a very focused story that didn’t give much away about the universe outside. Was the rest of the world just as corrupt as The Maw? In Little Nightmares 2, developer Tarsier Studios is able to expand upon a dark universe haunted by terrible creatures, while also further developing the character of Six and her new companion, Mono.

Tarsier Studio’s follow-up to its terrifying breakout horror puzzle-platformer may not be strictly a longer game, but by setting itself beyond the confines of the underwater Maw of the first game, it certainly feels like a bigger game, with even more horrible locales and moments to give you goosebumps.

Little Nightmares II is my favorite game of 2021 --which is quite the accomplishment considering how much of a huge coward I am. There is just something about how the game structured its bite-sized gameplay and ambiance, as it somehow managed to evoke an odd combination of excitement and dread that leaves me craving more.

Little Nightmares II is a true evolution from the first game. Tarsier Studios has done a fantastic job in creating a world that’s even more terrifying, brought to life with absolutely sublime art and sound. Sure, there are a few frustrations along the way, but they aren’t what will stick with you. Little Nightmares II is bigger and bolder, which builds upon the foundations from the first game. The game is host to a disgusting, decaying world that opens up as you progress through each chapter. Its inhabitants will haunt your dreams for days and the emotional connection it draws between Mono and Six with absolutely no dialogue is powerful. You can’t ignore the LittleBigPlanet in Little Nightmares II. Tarsier Studios may have turned to horror with its eerie 2017 puzzle platformer Little Nightmares, but the Swedish studio’s body of work largely involves Sackboy, and he hangs over this gloomy PlayStation 4 sequel like an ominous shadow. Mono moves like Media Molecule’s mascot, grabbing onto objects in order to solve physics-based puzzles. At twice the length of its predecessor, this sinister sequel has plenty of memorable moments, but it’s let down by an overemphasis on trial and error.

Little Nightmares 2 is every bit as black, bleak, and eerily beautiful as the original. It’s also just as brief, and although the reintroduction of the Six character as an AI-controlled co-op partner ultimately serves the story well, she’s not used as a vehicle to take the game’s puzzle-solving and stealth to interesting new places, which seems like a real missed opportunity.
