Ubisoft's second entry in the Mario + Rabbids universe improves upon the formula while retaining everything from the original that players fell in love with. The fusion of two already long-running franchises has the potential to keep going strong.

Sparks of Hope is a strong sequel that isn't afraid to reinvent the tactical foundation laid by the first Mario + Rabbids game.

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope is a tactical RPG that brings the denizens of the Mushroom Kingdom together once more with their Rabbid counterparts. Full of that trademark Nintendo magic and the zaniness Rabbids bring with every appearance, it’s an approachable, hilarious strategy game with likable characters, challenging battles, and a clear, welcome improvement over its predecessor Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, with even more surprises and hilarious Rabbid hijinks around every corner.

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope is an exciting step forward for the series that continues to surprise with its increasingly deep combat, gratifying exploration and joyful presentation. Ubisoft has embraced freedom in all senses of the word for this sequel, whether its additional real-time elements during combat, the ability to switch out and upgrade heroes and Sparks at will for endless combinations, or the oodles of optional content that's crammed into every planet. The predictable and occasionally long-winded story along with late game encounters that severely punish players for mistakes or missed opportunities may keep some players from seeing...

Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope is aptly named. Pardon my ultra cheesy cliché with this one, but it does showcase a bit of hope for a game company in dire need of some goodwill. Over the past few months, Ubisoft has been delivering bad news after bad news (delays, cancellations, NFTs), as well as a myriad of underwhelming releases, namely their latest Ghost Recon games, mobile outings, and a battle royale you didn’t even remember it existed prior to reading this sentence. Sparks of Hope is...

Five years ago, an unheard-of combination in games came to fruition. The magnificent, beloved world of Mario joined forces with Ubisoft’s Rabbids. Together, that primary Nintendo cast actually formed perfect harmony with those silly little rabbit mascots, creating what I would argue to be one of the best tactics games on the Switch, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. Five years later and its follow-up is here in Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope. Once more, we have a magical and strategic adven...

When Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope footage first premiered, the internet was adamant that it couldn’t be for the Switch. It looked so good, people assumed a hardware successor was imminent. The game is here, there’s still no Switch Pro, but it feels like a next-gen take on the original game, expanding on what worked to great effect. Now, the wait for the three-part DLC begins.

Ubisoft and Nintendo join forces once again to surprise us all with the most unlikely – and lovely – Nintendo Switch team-up.

Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope is a challenging turn-based strategy game, with an affable cast of characters and a strong sense of humor. The game's bizarre premise pairs Mario and friends along with their Raving Rabbid counterparts, then sends them off on an intergalactic adventure. While exploration can be tedious and combat could be a little more precise, Sparks of Hope is generally an excellent execution of an agreeably strange idea.

Still, with the improved (and approachable) combat system, semi-amusing story, and diverse side activities, Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope is a great game that can be recommended to almost anyone that has a Nintendo Switch. We wouldn't say it's the reason to go out and buy a Switch, but it's one of the best ways to get into a turn-based strategy game that has much more content to offer than its predecessor ever did.

Overall, Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope feels like a massive improvement over the first game, evolving in nearly every way. The characters and worlds stand out the most, but the combat is still a lot of fun for those who enjoyed the first game. There’s almost enough charm to keep players going through the hours and hours of side missions and extra content.

It’s been around five years since Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle floored us with its impressive amalgam of both franchises. This many years later, Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope takes what Kingdom Battle did and improves on it in almost every way. It's not just baby’s first XCOM anymore. This game brings meaningful evolution to the original’s formula to create a truly unique tactical RPG experience. Between removing the movement grid, adding more strategic options, new characters, new abilities, and expanding and revising the roster in an enjoyable story, Sparks of Hope feels like another exceptional collaboration between Ubisoft...

The marrying of Mario and Rabbids may still feel like a strange choice, even five years on from the first game, but Ubisoft and Nintendo have once again proved just how well this mash-up can work. Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope does the impossible by making the oft-impenetrable tactical combat genre approachable – and a heck of a lot of fun. Combine that with gorgeous, colourful visuals and fun platforming and exploration, and you’ve got one of the Switch’s best games.

There's a lot that's new and different in Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, creating a more freeform, looser feel to the game's world exploration and combat alike. Not all of the changes stick the landing, but the drive to reinvent and evolve is admirable and this is still easy to recommend for fans of the original and turn-based tactics in general.

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope is excellent and joyful and has just the right amount of chaos thanks to that Rabbids touch. The dev team has put time and care into the humor as much as the gameplay and I can't name a single time I felt bored or unconnected to the material. For those looking to pick up a game they can sink happy hours into, this is it. This is the perfect gateway to the tactics genre for any age and a true testament to the originality and beauty of collaborations.

Sparks of Hope is one of the best RPGs on the Nintendo Switch. Looking at its goofy mascot exterior, you’d never expect an incredibly deep and nuanced battle system that rivals the likes of XCOM and Divinity. Though tedious puzzles and a slim margin for error weigh it down, there’s no denying that Ubisoft and Nintendo have created something magical for a second time here.

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope launches with a spark of life. There are improvements and expansion of the gameplay and performance of the first game. Three new heroes to the game including an original (non-Mushroom Kingdom related) Rabbid character named Edge. There are brand new unique weapons and special abilities for each character.
