Like a masked superhero, there is more to Marvel Rivals than meets the eye. Marvel Rivals is a stellar multiplayer game that has plenty of potential in the years ahead. It sounds like it has a great content plan, as the game just added the Invisible Woman and Mr. Fantastic into the game a month into the game's launch. When you keep that in mind alongside the stellar gameplay and team-based mechanics, Marvel Rivals is likely to stay for many years ahead.

With 33 Heroes to play as, best-in-class presentation bookending matches, and a free-to-play monetization model, Marvel Rivals is almost too good to be true. There’s balancing issues, and some core problems with the way objectives play out, sure, but given that Marvel Rivals has only just launched, the future is very bright indeed. For now, you’ll be able to jump in and have a blast, whether you’re looking for a competitive challenge or casual fun.

Perhaps one the slickest free to play PVP releases of recent times, allowing Marvelheads or laypeople to hero shoot with frightening levels of choice. Perhaps a bit too much choice, for those who take their competitive games seriously.

With thirty-three playable characters at launch, Marvel Rivals sports an incredibly varied roster of beloved heroes and villains from the brand's lush history. Some are more recognizable than others, but each holds unique skills that must be used to damage opponents, help allies, or effectively navigate the battlefield. Each character fits into one of three categories: the tanky Vanguard, the damage-focused Duelist, and the supportive Strategist. While specific classes are nothing new to the hero shooter genre, the way Rivals encourages players to try out different characters with special team-up abilities is a refreshing addition that hopefully more games adapt.

Marvel Rivals takes many things other hero shooters have established but makes them flashier, more engaging, and, most importantly, accessible for everyone. It still has a few weird design choices, and some balance issues are showing, but overall, it's an engaging co-op shooter that will surely take the crown of the genre if it keeps the top-notch quality up.

Marvel Rivals is a game that puts fun first. Playing as one of Marvel’s huge and not-so-huge characters is a lot of fun, with stupid things like Rocket Raccoon and Jeff the Shark being fun to play. As I’m a Venom main, I love that I don’t need to study a meta guide to jump in and have fun. If Marvel Rivals keeps fun at the core of its gameplay, then it’ll be a hit for years to come.

Marvel Rivals feels like the first serious contender to Overwatch's crown; it's a game I can see being a part of my multiplayer rotation indefinitely. Marvel Rivals is an excellent start to what should be a long-running franchise. NetEase has done a great job of proudly using mechanics that are well-known while crafting a uniquely crazy experience all their own. This 6v6 hero shooter/fighter has started from a place of strength. With proper leadership, it should only improve and grow as the years pass this multiverse by.

Its oversized roster also needs more balancing – and more differentiation from Blizzard's stable of heroes.
