With its gorgeous visuals and punchy character arcs, Twisted Reflection supercharges the Monster Hunter Stories formula into a whole different beast. This isn't just a sequel – it’s a total glow-up for the series, packed with dazzling world-building and more iconic monsters than you can shake your Kinship Stone at.

Even though I have many complaints with every single Stories game so far, I have also found each of them to be better than the last. Monster Hunter Stories 3 isn’t exactly where I’d want the series to be just yet - but it’s very nearly there, and I think, for many, this will be one of the most satisfying monster collection RPGs on the market at the moment.

Gameplay-wise, there's not much here to win over those who aren't already fans of this Monster Hunter spin-off series, but thanks to numerous gameplay enhancements, a more mature story and full voice acting, Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection is undoubtedly a cut above its predecessors.

This is far more than just another monster-catching RPG; it's an intelligent, layered and moreish adventure that delivers an impactful, mature story that has sat with me for a long time. Consider me well surprised with this one.

Despite being the template of what hardcore action RPG’s once were before From Software got their time in the limelight, Monster Hunter has found ways to make the series accessible to all types of gamers. Perhaps the most famous of their franchise spin-offs is the Stories series, a title intended for younger audiences, more focused on hatching and raising monsters to battle alongside you. Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection isn't just the evolution of the series, but of the genre. It's in-depth systems, memorable story, and plethora of Monsties to hatch will draw in Riders and Hunters alike.

Monster Hunter is a series obsessed with its starring creatures. Every moment is spent in service to immense dragons, fire-breathing dinosaurs, and giant spiders, toads and squirrels that could bring down your house. However, the mainline series brings its own sense of melancholy with it, as you repeatedly kill and carve up these incredible creatures, using the parts to craft new and stronger weapons and armour. Continuing the spin-off RPG series, Monster Hunter Stories 3 feels like a direct reaction to that melancholy.

Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection is a huge step in the right direction for the franchise. The story is easily the best in the franchise, and while the gameplay still has problems (like the insistence on using AI-controlled party members), it's much better than its predecessor, and made me far more engaged with the combat and Monstie growth mechanics. ​​​​​​​Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection is way better than Monster Hunter Wilds, and hopefully reflects a brighter future for the series.​​​

Each area comes with various types and rarities of Monster Dens, and there are almost unlimited materials to gather. You'll find a host of side quests as well, but there are also Side Stories this time around. Each one lets you spend some time with a fellow Ranger in your crew, letting you get to know them better while performing a short quest that usually ends with a battle. For your troubles, you'll get nice upgrades and unique armor or weapons.

One of my favourite RPG series is back with Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection and it's more colourful and fun-filled than ever.

Monster Hunter Stories 3 delivers on every level, creating a thrilling story with beautiful visuals and satisfying and fun gameplay.

But this same focus means that the core audience for Twisted Redemption is the same as it’s always been. Outsiders like myself are unlikely to be converted to the cause. If you don’t have the patience and persistence needed to endlessly run that core loop, you won’t find your way into this game. I’m impressed by the design of the loop in question. Everything is focused neatly on monsters and their place in the larger world. But I still had a hard time latching on. The fights were still strenuous affairs, even in this more palatable turn-based format. The grind is well-crafted, but it never managed to properly hook me. But for fans of the main series looking for something different? Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection will be an incredible adventure.

Monster Hunter Stories 3 delivers deep build crafting and battle systems, but they're wasted on a war story that's barely there.

With a story that really goes places, a massive roster of monsters, and a stack of interlaced systems that combine to give the player a huge amount of choice and agency, Monster Hunter Stories: Twisted Reflection is the best in a trilogy of superb titles.

Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection is a visually striking expansion of Capcom’s beloved series, artfully adapting its core combat principles while maintaining the gnarly monster designs. A pool of side quests muddies the pacing somewhat, made worse by inconsistent platforming across the open world. Still, warm writing and lively vocal performances more than make up for what it lacks. If you’re looking for a rich world to sink hours into, look no further.

Monster Hunter Stories 3 is an excellent installment by all metrics. It sets a new narrative standard for the series and franchise as a whole while providing several enhanced signature elements. As such, it’s a game that can easily be recommended to both new and returning players.

From the engaging storyline to the gorgeous aesthetics, Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection is a wonderful experience from beginning to end.
