There are some small gripes that have held this game back just a little. There were some issues trying to connect to or stay in a game at times. This appears to be minor as it doesn’t happen all the time but when it does it is frustrating. At times, an extended play session would result in getting booted from the game just prior to the end which would make all of the coins that had been earned lost forever. Other times the game just refused to let an entire party join the same game. This was by far the...

There's fun to be had here, but it feels like a nice change of pace rather than a long-term alternative.

“Plants Vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare injects some fresh ideas into its multiplayer shooting, but PopCap Games' lack of genre experience is apparent.”

Years of cultivation at PopCap Games has led to the growth of its latest title, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare. This series has long been known as a popular tower defence title – however, the developer has now planted its roots into new soil by changing the format slightly. As its Call of Duty spoofing name may indicate, this fuses tower defence with third-person gunplay, allowing you to take control of plants in order to protect small gardens of flowers from the undead.

Garden Warfare is a surpisingly good third-person multiplayer/cooperative shooter. A refreshing light-hearted twist on class-based multiplayer games, with the depth and polish that you would expect from usual suspects in this genre.

When EA and Pop Cap revealed Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare at E3 back in June of 2013 I’ll have to admit that I was counted among the skeptics. Not only that I was surprised to see that a mobile game that was more based on a tower defense sort of model was making the leap into the world of multiplayer third person shooters. Sure, it was colourful and looked absolutely hilarious but that didn’t mean it would translate well in the end. After diving into the game this past week I’m delighted to say that I was dead wrong....

The game as its currently designed however, seems to lend itself well to the free-to-play model, supported by microtransactions and we wouldn't be surprised to see it go that path in the future. Right now, there's only one barrier to entry and it's the price.

A unique twist on tower defense games is what makes Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare so fun. The monotony of standard tower defense is broken and is now a split between that and a first person shooter, though the standard defense rules are still in place. Several game modes and beautiful worlds add to the flair of the title, making this a fun choice for any Xbox One owner.

What at first seems like a bizarre experiment actually turns out to be an accomplished and brilliantly entertaining multiplayer shooter. Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare might not manage to hold your attention for more than a few hours, but while it does, you can't fail to have a blast. Suitable for carnivores and vegetarians alike.

With a few more tweaks, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare would be a must-buy for pretty much any shooter fan out there. But even with its blemishes, I was incredibly surprised by the amount of depth the game has to offer on top of all of its charm. Hopefully EA will ease off the microtransactions in the future and even more content will pile in, because with the right moves and support, Garden Warfare will be something special for quite some time.

Garden Warfare respects its roots by preserving its characters and their humor and skillfully adapting their charm to a third-person shooter. A few clever twists on the standard modes give the action some fresh personality, and the co-op survival mode is a fun homage to the original games. Plus the solid controls, fun modes, and varied map design make it a good shooter to boot.
