When the issues of a game are rolled and stomped by its greatness, then it’s something to invest on if you have some spare.
Such issues that are very likely to be patched only serve to take the sheen off Project CARS 2 though rather than put a real dent in it. You can tell that there’s been heart and soul poured into the game, and while it’s sometimes a little rough around the edges, the uncompromising racing action manages to pull it through. The initial frustration you feel when you first take on a new event in a car you’re unaccustomed to soon turns to a feeling of accomplishment when you achieve that hard-fought victory, and it’s a feeling that’s hard to find anywhere else. Project CARS 2 won’t please all racing game fans, but it’ll delight those who crave realism and a challenge; those who want to push themselves to be better. Is that you?
Some sim-racing developers are in love with cars, but whether they love video games and the people who play them is unclear. I don't get that feeling from Project Cars 2 developer Slightly Mad Studios. The series is designed around the premise of making things fun, flexible, and easy for the player, and that focus comes out in the product.
Project Cars 2 is a game that doesn’t manage to capitalise on a lot of the enthusiasm that was generated for the original. Too buggy and not as accessible for newcomers as it should be, a lot of the genuine improvements are lost behind a veil of annoyance and frustration. Hopefully Slightly Mad Studios stick with it, because the wider range of racing disciplines, the refined career, and the improvements to LiveTrack and weather are all fantastic and deserve a better, more polished product to bring them to as many people as possible.
Project Cars 2 offers plenty of driver assists to make the experience easier. But there’s still a large wall to climb over for players looking for a more arcade like racer. Unfortunately that means it’s hard for me to see a game like this be appealing to a large audience. There’s a steep learning curve for simulation racing games and that can be off-putting. At times I even felt the authenticity in Project Cars was too much.
A bumpy ride.
Excellent mechanics, lots of options, stunning visuals, top-flight sound design and a emphasis on accessibility make Project Cars 2 a worthwhile sequel that will appeal to anyone who loves cars and isn't afraid of a challenge.
A definite improvement on the original, and despite some still notable flaws this is a wonderfully varied playground for motorsport fans of every kind.
Prepare to make room for the arrival of Slightly Mad Studios’ amazing and likely to be hugely successful game, Project CARS 2. Many of you are soon to be spoiled as Project CARS 2 boasts exciting new features, an insanely well developed game engine, and a whole lot of amazing visuals to boot. If you’re a GT fan, prefer the LMP’s, or even if you fancy a Drift or Rally – this game has got you covered.
Project CARS 2 is a great sequel to a strong but flawed first instalment. This time around, the flaws are far fewer, the racing is first class, and there's not much that Slightly Mad Studios hasn't addressed. Whether you're a sim aficionado or novice, Project CARS 2 is a racing game you need.
Project CARS 2 may still be a bit rough in places but with more accessibility than before as well as an extensive amount of vehicles and tracks to race through, this simulation style game will please most fans of the genre.
Any players that are serious about taking in the full Project Cars 2 experience will need a steering wheel, shifter and pedals. While it is much more forgiving for gamepad users than the original, deep progression and understanding vehicle feedback requires dedicated hardware. It lacks the rumble trigger feedback support present in the Forza games and the audiovisual cues provided will pale in comparison to what the player can experience with a force feedback wheel setup. While the heavy tilt towards simulation provided by Project Cars 2 is not really in my wheelhouse, I can still objectively see it for what it is, a love letter to driving that hardcore players will find irresistible. 8 out of 10 Shake ‘n Bakes
As blockbusters Forza Motorsport 7 and Gran Turismo Sport prepare to burst into the world, Project CARS 2 provides a different kind of ride; this game offers up an authentic and immersive sandbox experience that Microsoft and Sony’s offerings simply can’t achieve with their crowd-pleasing remits.
With all of the trailers, experts, and attention to detail, I expected Project Cars 2 to take the trophy as racing sim of the year. It is definitely not. What you DO get is a game that challenges you to a frustrating degree and does so with beautiful precision. It sadly also takes a bunch of the fun out of it too.
Project Cars 2 is the apex of apex-hitting sims, but leaves casuals behind.
Project CARS 2 PS4 Review
Project CARS 2 plays like a pumped-up version of the classic TOCA Race Driver 3 from 2006, redressing many of the complaints levelled at the original. The handling has been tuned to a T, the content is excellently curated, and the amount of variety and racing available in it is delightfully daunting. Even if you don’t care about the developer’s esports aspirations there’s still a mammoth solo racer here that’s always ready to roll whenever you are. Now and then I’ll encounter a display quirk or a bug that may botch a race start, and the AI desperately needs a lesson in first corners, but when I’m out on track wringing ten-tenths out of my car against just the right AI level – one eye on the car ahead and the other on the clouds above – this is about as good as real racing gets right now.
I've got a big problem with Project CARS 2. It's a huge, gaping problem. One that, if you were to see it, you'd say "that's a bloody big problem". What is this problem? I just don't like Project CARS 2. Why? Simply put, I can't actually play the game.
Project Cars 2 promises to deliver the ultimate driver journey experience and adrenaline rush.
