Quantum Break aims to innovate in storytelling with a mini-TV series as well as change the game by taking the idea of bullet time to the next level. After performance issues with the Windows Store/DX12 release, we decided to take a look at the relatively recent Steam/DX11 version.

Quantum Break is an excellent game to watch. After the 8 hour campaign the most memorable moments came from the live-action sequences and not the actual game. Disappointing design choices cause too many bland situations where you either clear out a room of enemy soldiers, solve a basic puzzles, or perform some annoying platforming. When the credits began the roll the only memorable situations during the entire campaign came from the live-action scenes.

Quantum Break has all the things we ask for from a video game and some things that we don't. Great gameplay, impressive graphics and presentation, and an amazing story are all state of the industry from Remedy. I just wonder what this game might have been if the game aspect of it had been fleshed out just a little bit more.

It’s a disappointing realization, but not a damning one. Far from it, actually. Remedy’s keen understanding of how to make an action title shines through, and it’s every bit a game that has been lovingly crafted for years. Quantum Break won’t at all times feel like a game, as the player spends a fair chunk of time relegated to spectator. But, no matter which side Quantum Break is showing, it’s always going to be a spectacular one.

...as a marquee Microsoft-exclusive action title, Quantum Break delivers impressively on just about every front except that of content; it literally begs for a New Game Plus mode

It took roughly ten hours to complete Quantum Break the first time, and the replayability is largely limited to two playthroughs total for those that just want to wrap it up and move on. Even then, it's a well-crafted adventure that innovates in a way that compelled me to continue putting my own time into it. Even as I write this, I'm being drawn to go back and experience it again from any combination of different angles. Perhaps I'll go do that.

Time travel stories have always been full of plot holes, clichés and paradoxes. And you can bet Remedy has hungrily consumed them all. The Finnish studio first made its name with hard-boiled detective noir Max Payne in 2001, and took on the supernatural thriller with 2010’s Alan Wake.

Remedy swung for the fences and hit a homerun with Quantum Break. With an engrossing story, an amazing cast, and the most beautiful visuals on the Xbox One we’ve ever seen, Quantum Break is a masterpiece.

Like Max Payne and Alan Wake before it, Quantum Break has already left me desperate for a sequel. And with one or two loose threads left dangling tantalisingly, the way is certainly open for one. Quantum Break is another superlative Remedy game, combining story and gameplay to startling effect. I want to go back in time and play it afresh, all over again.

Ultimately, Quantum Break was obviously an experiment. On one side, I'd rather see game developers and publishers focus their resources on telling their stories via the games themselves, but it's impossible not to recognize the value of this title as a game.

Quantum Break makes some amazing innovations in the gaming industry with the live-action TV show, unique and original powers and abilities, and beautifully designed set pieces and the levels built around them. However, the story leaves a lot to be desired, the abundance of video game tropes thrown in your face is way overboard, and the controls for telling Jack where to go really need some tweaking. However, it's still worth the ride.

Quantum Break is an artistically distinct shooter, with a compelling and malleable plot and excellent performances from its main players in both their digital and live-action forms. While I wish more thought had gone into maintaining the thrill of discovering its time-twisting powers from start to finish, it ultimately didn’t prevent me from thoroughly enjoying Quantum Break’s 10-hour campaign, two times over.

Quantum Break's commitment to delivering a rich, layered narrative isn't always conducive to gameplay, but that doesn't diminish how engrossing this is an entertainment experience. The combination of intense time-bending action, gripping story, and cutting-edge presentation make this the kind of game that sucks you in and doesn't let go until the credits roll. While it's not quite as inventive as it thinks it is, Quantum Break is fresh, ambitious, and a heck of a lot of fun.
