Scars Above is a game that will help you turn off for a few hours, without needing to be challenged by gameplay while being entertained by the visuals and storyline — if your eyes haven’t glazed over by then.

Scars Above is unfortunately bland, with dull combat and very few puzzles. It has hints at interesting ideas and ambitions, but couldn’t execute on those.

Scars Above tried to make its place by adding twists onto well know mechanics, but tragically falls just short. While it does bring many new and interesting ideas to the table, it is hard to notice them when none of the other mechanics seem to work well together.

Far from being a wasted opportunity, Scars Above remains a journey worth taking if you’re not the overly demanding type – just turn off your brain, let yourself go, and appreciate the ride for what it is.

Scars Above is an incredibly challenging and satisfying third-person shooter that mixes and matches elements from some of the most popular video game franchises in history. It doesn't fully flesh out elements from any of these franchises though its addictive gameplay loop, fueled by some diligent boss encounters, is enough incentive to finish its campaign. However, its bland writing and underwhelming vocal performance mean you won't remember this one for a very long time.

Perhaps if Scars Above had put more work into the areas where our lead heroine has to explore this strange world and analyze it more in order to solve various puzzles, basically letting her be the scientist she is, it could have been vastly better overall, or at least help give it a better identity to help it stand out more. Instead, Scars Above settles for being a generic third-person action game that rarely, if ever, takes any sort of risks. While it may not fall prey to anything that feels egregiously bad and at least has decent combat, you'll...

An interesting concoction of genre traits and structures makes Scars Above one of the more engaging action-adventure game attempts even if it does suffer from some combat woes.

Scars Above draws from Dark Souls and third-person shooters with fun elemental mechanics.

With an intriguing set-up, likeable lead, and aspirations of grandeur, Scars Above is a sci-fi adventure game that we really wanted to like. Unfortunately, the experience is held back by lacklustre combat, abysmal map design, and a central narrative that ultimately fails to launch.

Scars Above was a surprisingly short game, but the sci-fi story it tells is interesting enough. While it seems from the outside to borrow many soul-like ideas, the game does enough differently to set itself apart.

Unless one is really desperate to unlock a bunch of easy achievements, there is no real reason to play Scars Above. It's like a video game rough draft. Some games have been accused of being half-baked, but Scars Above is like raw dough. It has some interesting concepts and weapons, but it never grows into anything resembling a full-fledged gaming experience. Its budget price of $40 is still asking way too much, even for the most diehard third-person shooter enthusiasts. Scars Above may mimic games like Returnal and Dark Souls, but it is highly unlikely to please fans of either...

Scars Above is a great addition to the library of single player adventures and it tells an engaging sci-fi story that interrogates ideas of genetic manipulation, free will, and sacrifice. While it loses momentum a little towards the end, it serves as a fantastic advertisement for smaller budget games and is well worth picking up.

Scars Above has its ups and downs but offers fun gameplay with interesting mechanics in an alien world that is equal parts beautiful and dangerous. There’s a good mystery to be solved, even if it’s a bit too straightforward. And while there are a few snags regarding the script, I very much appreciate the scientific approach with Kate.

Inspired by many games you’ve probably played, Scars Above does its best to tell a unique story and stand out on top. Does it succeed or get lost in space?

There's not a lot of negative things I have to say about Mad Head Games' Scars Above, but I don't have a lot of positive things to say either. It's an aggressively average experience brought down by performance issues and lack of important accessibility features. Even where color is present, this game drowns in dullness.

Even so, I enjoyed my almost 9 hours of gameplay on normal difficulty from start to the end credits. The last hours take the plot and lore into some rather exciting locations, with some dark themes and visuals involved, as even the main character’s mental health is questioned more than once. Scars Above is a good-looking cinematic third person action game with engaging combat, a cool if not particularly original plot narrated via some rather average characters in excellent and exciting locations. As an “AA” release, it cuts some corners compared to the behemoths of the genre to make ends...

Have you ever watched a trailer of a game and your first impression was that it reminded you of another very popular game? Inspiration from other games is a normal thing among artists in general, so you purchase the game hoping for a different spin on what you already loved. However, what if it turns out it’s something different than what the trailers lead you to believe? This was me with Scars Above. At first, it reminded me a lot of Returnal, one of my favorite games on the PS5 and now PC...

Scars Above reaches for the stars but doesn't quite get there thanks to hum drum storytelling and passable shooting action.

Humans encountering an extraterrestrial object and being teleported to another planet isn’t a new premise. But even if Scars Above treads familiar ground, it experiments in other aspects to stand out from the crowd. These experiments pay off, giving you a solid adventure that doesn’t wear out its welcome too quickly.

In the end, that’s what Scars Above is. It’s solid, but not exciting. The game looks good, and it’s got cool creature designs, but it’s lacking in everything else. The boss fights aren’t interesting, the combat becomes routinised and while the narrative engaged me, the characters aren’t well-written. If anybody told me they were emotionally connected with Kate, I would be very hesitant to believe them. Scars Above is a fine game, but not a very memorable one, especially in a period when sci-fi survival horror is becoming a crowded field. Much like the planet you explore, Scars Above is...

We somewhat enjoyed Scars Above, but we wanted to like it a lot more than we did. It has some interesting ideas and a solid story, but the gameplay unfortunately feels a tad too basic. And then there are the bugs. They might not be all that common, but when you do encounter them, they frustrate. Hopefully they’ll be quashed quickly after launch. In any case, pick up Scars Above, manage your expectations, and chances are you’ll have an enjoyable time with it overall. Just be aware that it’s more akin to a B-movie than a main feature.

Scars Above is a fascinating mix of point-and-click narrative and Soulslike action games. I can’t recall playing a game quite like it in the recent past, and for that alone, it deserves praise.
