Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Playing more like a massive expansion to Rise of the Tomb Raider rather than a new entry in the series, Shadow of the Tomb Raider is still a solid, if derivative, game.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is Lara's most dangerous journey yet, but also her best. Action-adventure aficionados and Tomb Raider fans alike shouldn't hesitate to check this one out.

Regardless, playing through Shadow of the Tomb Raider was still a really lovely experience from start to finish. The lack of innovation from the previous two instalments left me a little disappointed, but there’s still plenty to love. The game is absolutely gorgeous. I love its characters, and the settings are mind boggling. The stealth is smooth as butter and the numerous side quests, secret tombs and crypts offer a good challenge without ever being impossible. Standing in the shadows.

While I've not completed the game due to some technical issues before release, I've spent a good 20 hours with Shadow Of The Tomb Raider, and they really have been good. This works out as a great balance between the icon-ticking compulsion of a top tier Ubisoft game, with the puzzling chops from a team that have suddenly remembered they were the best in the business. It's huge and detailed and stupid and probably most of all, fun. Problematic fun, without question, in a way that the game loudly invites upon itself, and the gets completely arse about tit. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is another compelling reason to jump, run and suffer in Lara Croft's boots. Stellar production values, new mechanics and a deftly paced campaign do wonders even if the formula is pretty familiar by now.

Minor nuisances aside, Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a great way to end Lara's origin story.

I’ve come to love the game’s name, which describes its situation concisely. Lara Croft’s latest adventure lives in the shadow of Tomb Raider — the tacky marketing of the 1996 debut, the prestige of the modern trilogy. Eventually, Shadow of the Tomb Raider succumbs to the darkness, repeating many of the series’ usual mistakes, but along the way it shines a thrilling and refreshing light.
