Shadow of the Tomb Raider takes the series’ formula and pushes it, polishing the platforming and bolstering its tombs, but the game’s power ebbs as the main quest is bloated with distraction, and the writing is still patchy and dull.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider should leave us wanting more from the rebooted Lara Croft game, but with some clunky controls and a lazy combat system, what saves the game from being below average are beautiful visuals, fantastic puzzles and tomb layouts along with true adventuring. It's as mixed up of a bag as one can get.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is entertaining enough to be worth the price of admission, but it's an action-adventure title that follows the same beats as any action-adventure title. While the story may be new, the characters, the set-pieces, and the dramatic ending, are all things we've seen before.

Verdict: Shadow of the Tomb Raider is not a perfect game. Some of the NPC voices are too rigid, the side quests feel like chores, and some of the sound effects are overbearing. The camera draws too close to Lara in towns, and the reloads after a death could be quicker. The death cinematics is brutal, and to be frank this is a gory game. This isn’t the 1996 Tomb Raider.

When it comes to reboots, 2013’s Tomb Raider will always be fondly remembered as one that got it completely right. Blending an open world style map with enthralling puzzles and fun exploration, this was only heightened further by the follow-up, Rise of the Tomb Raider, which I must confess is one of my favourite games from this generation. Shadow of the Tomb Raider sets out to conclude the story of this version of Lara Croft, with a grittier and more violent tone this time around. While it ...

I’ve come to love the game’s name, which describes its situation concisely. Lara Croft’s latest adventure lives in the shadow of Tomb Raider — the tacky marketing of the 1996 debut, the prestige of the modern trilogy. Eventually, Shadow of the Tomb Raider succumbs to the darkness, repeating many of the series’ usual mistakes, but along the way it shines a thrilling and refreshing light.

That’s why the narrative payoff falls short. Lara has always played the roles of savior and protector and researcher and badass — almost entirely because those are parts she has been thrust into. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a perfectly good game, but it feels as though it never figures out a way to address the most compelling aspect of this arc: Lara’s personal growth. What path does she want to carve? What does she want her legacy to be? Maybe she’d be happiest spending her life raiding tombs — all of the danger with none of the world-ending...

Regardless, playing through Shadow of the Tomb Raider was still a really lovely experience from start to finish. The lack of innovation from the previous two instalments left me a little disappointed, but there’s still plenty to love. The game is absolutely gorgeous. I love its characters, and the settings are mind boggling. The stealth is smooth as butter and the numerous side quests, secret tombs and crypts offer a good challenge without ever being impossible. Additionally, the history that goes along with the storyline is really intriguing. And, not going to lie, some of the creepy things in the...

While I've not completed the game due to some technical issues before release, I've spent a good 20 hours with Shadow Of The Tomb Raider, and they really have been good. This works out as a great balance between the icon-ticking compulsion of a top tier Ubisoft game, with the puzzling chops from a team that have suddenly remembered they were the best in the business. It's huge and detailed and stupid and probably most of all, fun. Problematic fun, without question, in a way that the game loudly invites upon itself, and the gets completely arse about tit. And...

There are some flaws, but Shadow of the Tomb Raider is never less than a thrilling adventure, which is exactly what it needs to be. Yes the storyline never makes sense and the big world-ending threat never feels truly threatening, but at least Lara’s character gets examined, and the game’s other elements make up for this. The setpieces are all exciting, the puzzle rooms are amazing, and the challenge tombs are the highlight. The game also looks gorgeous, with superb architecture, especial...

It’s only a small step forward from the last game but this is the most successful attempt so far to modernise Tomb Raider, even if the storytelling still has problems.

As a final blowoff to the Trinity saga, I couldn't help but walk away feeling that the resolution to the story and to Lara Croft's character could have been so much better. But in terms of a pure "Tomb Raider" game, Shadow of the Tomb Raider is everything a bold explorer could ask for, giving players a vast jungle to explore and daring them to master it.

Building on the foundations of Rise of the Tomb Raider, there’s more depth to the actual tomb raiding, more flexibility in the combat, and the city of Paititi is a hub that you can easily get lost in as you explore it and the surrounding jungle. So, while Shadow of the Tomb Raider’s story lacks some of the meaning and impact that it sets out to, this is another action packed romp for fans of the series.

Lara Croft is undoubtedly one of the most iconic videogame characters and not just for its theatrical appearances. She was arguably the first female lead of a big game in a medium which was, for the most part, dominated by macho protagonists at the time.

Lara Croft is no more, and the Tomb Raider takes her place. This latest entry is a wonderful cap on this rebooted series that delivers on both the promise to refresh the character of Lara Croft and to bring the action of old Tomb Raider games to the modern era. It was a fun and visually stunning game from beginning to end.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the best game in this trilogy and was well worth the wait. I've been trying to hold myself back with gushing about all the things so I don't spoil it for everyone, but seriously this game is a masterpiece. Yes there are somethings which bothered me while playing but overall the experience was magnificent and should not be missed.

Playing more like a massive expansion to Rise of the Tomb Raider rather than a new entry in the series, Shadow of the Tomb Raider is still a solid, if derivative, game.

Over five years ago, we were introduced to a revamped Lara Croft, different than the one we’d known for decades. Crystal Dynamics took on the task of rebooting the character by creating an origin story that would give us deeper insight into her personality and show her at her most vulnerable. It was an exciting change of pace, as we were watching her grow from inexperienced adventurer to full-fledged tomb raider. Shadow of the Tomb Raider provides the final piece of this transformation, showing us her defining moment of becoming the wall climbing relic hunter she was meant to be....

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is another compelling reason to jump, run and suffer in Lara Croft's boots. Stellar production values, new mechanics and a deftly paced campaign do wonders even if the formula is pretty familiar by now.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider gives players a lifelike jungle environment to explore, plenty of deadly puzzles to solve, and no shortage of tombs to raid. It certainly has its flaws, but most players will be able to overlook many of them. The series continues to struggle with giving players a compelling reason to keep playing beyond the end credits and aspects of the narrative could have used more work, but it's still a mostly satisfying conclusion to Lara's origin story.

With a story that manages to satisfactorily tread the line between high-concept fun and grounded character exploration, Shadow of the Tomb Raider meaningfully wraps up the journey Lara began in 2013 and convincingly leaves her in a place resembling where she was when we were first introduced to her more than 20 years ago. I would have liked a little more incentive to explore the beautiful world Eidos Montreal has created, but I’d much prefer too much content than too little. There’s so much to enjoy elsewhere in a game that’s stuffed to the brim with ideas and devilishly challenging...
