It’s almost shocking to realise that Sniper Elite as a series has been around for 20 years this October. Between the main series and its zombies themed spin-offs, which I’m sure were not at all inspired by Call of Duty, the new entry Sniper Elite: Resistance makes for a total of 12 games in the series. Which is insane to think about when you consider there are 7 years between the first two games in the series. Sniper Elite has always been in the World War 2 time period, fighting back agai...

Graphical caveats aside, Sniper Elite: Resistance is fun to play not only because of the various game modes but how you can approach missions. The developers also devoted significant effort to ballistics and weapons handling. Veteran players will feel right at home. New players will be delighted with the variety of missions. Both will be delighted with the options of how they can play them.

Sniper Elite: Resistance delivers more of the excellent tactical stealth shooting action that Sniper Elite 5 boasted three years ago. It might be a familiar experience, but for genre fans, it's still an easy recommendation.

While the campaign is fun but often too familiar, Resistance shines most of all in some of the game's secondary modes, particularly Invasion and No Cross PvP. Of course, bringing a buddy along to play the story in co-op smooths over some of its roughness, too. I do want to play more of this series, but I'm hopeful the next one takes a bigger leap forward and cleans up some of the long-present jank. Like the difference between the second and third games in the series, it's only going to be the next big step for Sniper Elite if the...

I’m finding it hard to focus on and enjoy games at the moment. I’m terrified every day I wake up that the Government will take away more rights from myself, my friends, my family and my loved ones. I see headlines from overseas that workplaces are partaking in a snitch hotline to dob in those “hired due to diversity.” I sit, terrified that this is just the beginning and the world is losing its compassion and care. This isn’t several decades ago. This is 2025. I launch Sniper Elite: ...

It’s an understatement to say that 2025 has been rough… and brace yourselves, because we’re still in January. As people, for some inexplicable reason, bother to debate whether or not Elon Musk threw up two Nazi salutes at Trump’s inauguration (he did), Sniper Elite Resistance has come out at a perfect time. Not only does it remind us that fascism is bad, but of the importance of fighting back.

Technically a spinoff and not a fully-fledged mainline sequel, Sniper Elite: Resistance sees players assume the role of Harry Hawker, a Special Operations Executive agent tasked with hunting down a secret Nazi super-weapon that could jeopardize the imminent D-Day operation, a journey that takes Hawker across WW2-era France. In a nutshell, Sniper Elite: Resistance is everything fans would expect it to be; no more, but certainly no less.

Altogether, Sniper Elite: Resistance is a fine entry in the Sniper Elite franchise which gives us more insight into Harry Hawker, as well as a shiny protagonist spotlight for him to be recognized in. The meat and potatoes (or should that be bullets and bones?) of the Sniper Elite experience is all here and accounted for, and although there are various new locations to be in awe of, and navigational options to test out, Resistance fails to truly push the envelope in exciting directions despite shifting the focus onto a new hero and a new story.

Sniper Elite: Resistance is a lot like a sequel out of the PS2 generation. Rather than building on and expanding what it achieved in Sniper Elite 5, developer Rebellion has gone with more of the same. The old-school TV advert practically writes itself: eight new levels, a returning playable character, and more weapons and gadgets to beat down Nazi scum than ever before. You couldn’t even call it Sniper Elite 5.5; it’s probably 5.3 at best.

One of Sniper Elite Resistance’s missions is called “End of the Line.” I found it fitting as I flirted with the notion in my mind. The franchise has something that demands more games and maintains a pretty consistent fanbase eating up everything Rebellion puts out. But I think even hardened fans will have a hard time seeing the need for this sequel.

Sniper Elite: Resistance is a fantastic time, with its minor flaws rarely impacting the experience.

Sniper Elite: Resistance is another great entry into a relatively overlooked stealth franchise. While the game feels a little more like an expansion pack to Sniper Elite 5 rather than a full-fledged sequel, it still hits the highs of the previous entry with great level design and satisfying sniping. Meanwhile, the new Propaganda Challenge mode offers a nice arcade-style distraction.

Sniper Elite: Resistance sticks to its guns and plays it safe, reiterating everything that makes the series great without introducing anything new.

A new protagonist might not be enough to make Sniper Elite: Resistance feel fresh.

Sniper Elite: Resistance is a solid stealth-based shooter, but it fails to set its sights high enough in order to pull off a truly spectacular execution.

Sniper Elite: Resistance is another rock-solid entry in the long-running shooter series, bringing all the decision-making and graphic kills we’ve come to expect. But with a paper-thin story and a lack of innovation across the board, it’s unlikely to bring in players who aren’t already sold on Sniper Elite’s signature brand of stealth.

You know what you're getting with Sniper Elite: Resistance; a spin-off covert mission that matches the scale and scope of Sniper Elite 5, but doesn't really go beyond it. It's more Sniper Elite, and there's still plenty of enjoy in that.

Sniper Elite: Resistance may not innovate much on the series' standard blueprint, but it's still a challenging, rewarding, and deeply satisfying adventure.

Sniper Elite: Resistance returns with the tried and tested formula of Sniper Elite 5. While that should be enough to make this a great game, some bugs keep it from reaching perfection. However it's still a fun and intense sniping and stealth experience.

As someone that has played the previous titles in the franchise, Sniper Elite: Resistance is highly enjoyable. If you haven’t played the series before then this one isn’t the best starting point.

Sniper Elite: Resistance is very much worth your time if you have any interest in sniping, exploring maps in occupied France, or feeling like an action hero from WWII movies. The shooting mechanics, both at long-range and in close quarters, are fun and satisfying. There's nothing quite like using the sound of the thunderstorm to mask your sniper shots, or landing several silenced headshots from your pistol in a row. Gathering collectibles, unlocking attachments for your weapons, and finding new and interesting ways to tackle each objective gives Sniper Elite: Resistance a lot of replay value. Add in co-op mode...

Sniper Elite: Resistance is a super solid return to slo-mo sniping duties. It may lack the overall wow-factor and technical upgrades of its predecessor, and it treads a lot of very familiar ground, but this new entry has still got it where it matters most. A procession of nine outstanding maps provide sandboxes galore for the usual tricks, traps and fancy long-range shots, the new Propaganda missions are a fun diversion, and protagonist Harry Hawker is as close to Sniper Elite: Danny Dyer as we're likely to get. Add in co-op and Axis Invasions and you've got yourself another great...

More of a sidequel than a true sequel, Sniper Elite: Resistance delivers the core experience of Sniper Elite 5 with a new protagonist, fresh maps, and the same solid stealth mechanics that made the previous entry enjoyable. While it may not offer the evolution some fans were hoping for, the game still provides plenty of fun thanks to its well-designed levels and satisfying gameplay.

Sniper Elite: Resistance isn't really doing anything new, and that's ok. It's sticking to a tried and true formula and delivering on promises for solid gameplay mechanics spread out over sprawling open levels. It does carry forward the best features ironed out in previous games like kill cams, a balance of stealth and action, freedom to meet objectives, and even Invasion mode to add some spice to the mix if you're so inclined. It's not groundbreaking but it doesn't have to be because it follows a well trodden path that is already established and frankly just a lot of fun...

Sniper Elite: Resistance is available on Day One on Game Pass, and that’s how I’d recommend anyone but the most ardent fan of the series plays it. At $60 MSRP it’s a big ask for something that can be completed in a night or two. While there is some replay value on offer there isn’t enough new here for those familiar with the series to warrant a full purchase. If you love Sniper Elite and want more though, then you’ll find nothing here to displease you.

Sniper Elite: Resistance delivers the expected stealth-action combo the series is known for, wrapping it in a forgettable narrative about stopping the Nazi war machine from totally winning the war yet again. But even as it’s a functional title, with levels that offer a decent amount of freedom and X-Ray kills that remain satisfying to watch, this follow-up ends up feeling like a tired, unnecessary rehash of its predecessor.

While the most obvious answer to the question of disclosing the expected playtime of a game is to offer a heads-up on how long it may take to see the end credits, there's a part of me that believes (or maybe wants to believe) there's another possibility. Perhaps it's some clever little strategy from the developer's end to temper one's expectations so that when the reality of having invested far more time -- knowingly and voluntarily so -- hits, the response weighs more positively.

Sniper Elite: Resistance may be very similar to the last entry in the series, but that doesn't stop it from being a wonderfully fun third-person stealth experience.

Sniper Elite: Resistance offers an experience that its series has largely cornered the market on. And it provides that experience very well. But it is disappointing to see just how little it has iterated on the foundation laid by Sniper Elite 5.

Those who have played and enjoyed Sniper Elite 5 are likely to slide into Sniper Elite: Resistance like a glove. Over familiarity might be an issue for some, though, and there are some other minor issues to consider as well, such as sub-par visuals. But overall, lining up the perfect shot and watching the aftermath via the x-ray kill cam is as entertaining as ever.

I wish I hated anything as much as Sniper Elite: Resistance’s creators, the folks over at Rebellion, hate Nazis. Talking about how much you detest fascism is one thing; dedicating your entire career to making the same exact ultraviolet execution simulator over and over again is a different beast entirely. It’s a level of ‘hater’ that everyone should aspire to.

A fully-featured mid-generation slab of enjoyable Nazi-shooting, that has only a few unique ideas but still manages to remain compelling throughout.
