Super Mario Maker 2 is much more than an enhanced Switch port. Featuring a lengthy story mode, a myriad of smart additions, and more ways to create nightmarish abominations and call them Mario levels, this is some essential Mario that Switch owners won't want to miss.

When I was a kid, I loved playing games that featured level or campaign editors, as well as tools that allowed me to create games with zero coding experience. Maybe it was the frustrated game developer in me that wanted to create my own stuff in RTS campaign editors, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater‘s map creators, and RPG Maker as a whole. But I never managed to create something really good, or even play the creations of others in an easy and intuitive fashion. That was the main selling point of t...

Super Mario Maker 2 has a bright future ahead of it, but it's still a fully-featured game at launch. The new tools make for exciting additions to the game, and users have already created spectacularly fun levels that can be downloaded right now. The multiplayer implementation in Super Mario Maker 2 definitely has room for improvement, but otherwise players should have a ton of fun with the game.

Put in as simple a manner as possible, this is likely to be the last 2D Mario game you’ll need. It’s Super Mario Maker but with more of everything that made the original so phenomenal. Enemies, themes, game styles, gizmos, powerups, the Story Mode having an actual story, multiplayer, the list of additional gubbins is truly massive when you take a step back. There are a few small niggles here and there, but they're overwhelmingly dwarfed by the sheer joy and unbridled freedom that exceeds the original in spades. Realistically this game poses the question as to whether this is...

Super Mario Maker 2 is the most accessible game design tool ever created, and that core is just one part of a greater whole. I spent hours building levels, testing them, and starting over again, and I feel like I've only barely scratched the surface of what's possible. The Story Mode has a basic story, sure, but it's still a great excuse to introduce hundreds of novel, professionally made levels to play. Its design tutorials are so much more in depth than they ever needed to be, and you can take them or leave them as you see fit. Super...

Super Mario Maker 2 is all that the original was and more. The Story Mode feels like a proper campaign, demoing all of the old and new feature and barmy possibilities found in the intuitive level creator. It's a shame that it features some typical Nintendo online stumbles, but it shouldn't be long before that's forgotten in the face of the boundless creativity of the Super Mario Maker community.

It's fair to say that Super Mario Maker was a revelation to everyone who played it. Whether it was the Wii U original or the 3DS adaptation, Super Mario Maker finally allowed players the freedom to craft the worlds they had in their minds, all while playing more Super Mario levels than they've ever had access to before. You could download all of the romhacks you wanted, but when Super Mario Maker was at its peak, it was unbeatable. And then Miiverse closed down.

Get your thinking helmets on, because Mario and co. are here for a second course of constructive adventure with Super Mario Maker 2! The original entry on the Wii U (and later 3DS) managed to be quite the highlight for the system, so to say that the sequel had it’s work cut out for it is an understatement. Thankfully, this follow-up to the fan-favourite has done everything it needed to and more in creating a worthy successor.

Before Super Mario Maker’s release on Wii U in 2015, making Mario levels was a privilege that belonged exclusively to Nintendo designers. Today, perhaps the initial charm of placing your own question mark blocks has worn away, but Super Mario Maker 2 does plenty to expand and improve the experience.

Nintendo ups the ante on its quirky, creative Mario level-crafting toolset by making it even quirkier and more creative and offering a thoroughly entertaining story experience to go along with it.

Super Mario Maker 3DS is a subpar port of a great game. While a lot of the fun is still there, the lack of sharing and search features make for an overall inferior experience.

No one quite knew whether Super Mario Maker was gonna be any good or not last year. Clearly Nintendo has proved itself more than capable of one stellar outing after another for the world’s most famous plumber, but could its fans do the same?

Super Mario Maker is worth investing if you want to something that test your creatively and gives you staggering amounts of gameplay content. Those willing to invest time and effort will find a lot of reasons to keep coming back, but not enough to keep playing for long hours. In short burst I found myself immediately surfing the community listing for the latest, and hottest, stage but immediately leaving once I completed it. Super Mario Maker isn’t for everyone but it’s definitely worth checking out, especially for those yearning to craft their own masterpiece set in Mario’s world.
