With a team based approach to racing Team Sonic Racing is a very unique addition to the Sonic franchise, solidly executed across the board. It especially excels in larger multiplayer groups.

When you and your two pals are sharing item pick-ups, driving in each other’s racing lines, and skimming past one another for a boost, Team Sonic Racing shines. It offers something different in the kart racing genre.

You better have to choose if it’s worth spending your spare cash, because it might not be the game for you and it might be for others.

Team Sonic Racing has an amazing soundtrack that’s chock-full of stellar remixes of classic Sonic tunes. I’m a sucker for Rooftop Run, no matter what game it’s in, and the remix and track in Team Sonic Racing based on that stage are top-notch. The same goes for the Seaside Hill-based track, as well as the ones based on original Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing courses. There’s so much to love in Team Sonic Racing’s soundtrack that I’d recommend it to everyone, even if you’re not interested in the game itself.

Despite this, Team Sonic Racing is still one of the weaker kart racers we've played. Older Sonic racing games are far superior, offering more content and are not held back by the team-based racing gimmick. There are better kart racers on the market, and with games like like the Crash Team Racing remake right around the corner, it's hard to recommend Team Sonic Racing, even at its budget price. Hardcore Sonic the Hedgehog fans may still want to give it a look after a price drop, though.

Team Sonic Racing uses an interesting team mechanic to shake up what is otherwise a pretty average arcade racing title. If you're really into the genre or have two dedicated friends to play with it might be a fun experience but you aren't going to get anything here you don't already have from somewhere else.

This has been a very weird year for Sonic fans. The year started off with the news of an upcoming live-action movie, followed by the release of that trailer featuring everybody’s favorite blue hedgehog, depicting the stuff of my nightmares. It seemed like things couldn’t possibly improve for fans of the franchise, until the movie’s director decided to change the much criticized design of the main character. To top things off, we now have a brand new Sonic game, and thankfully enough, it...

Team Sonic Racing is closer to a 3D Sonic game to a kart racer, and I love it. Sonic Heroes Racing, anyone?

There's a ton to like about Team Sonic Racing. The racing itself is as tight and high octane as ever while remaining accessible. Some of the challenge might be a bit much for the wee ones in single player, but otherwise, the solo content is extremely engaging and well balanced. Online works like a dream and local play with friends will still serve up some classic rivalries turning into fist fights. By design, there's some stuff that was in the previous game whose absence feels missed here, but Team Sonic Racing is still a no brainer for Sonic fans and...

It might not be as good as Sonic & All-Stars Racing: Transformed, but Team Sonic Racing is a joyous and remarkably fun kart racer with a smart team-based twist. Gotta go fast, and that.

When it comes to the nitty gritty of it all, Team Sonic Racing might not be the strongest, most innovative racer out there, but fans of Sega’s previous karting games as well as fans of Sonic will definitely find something to enjoy. The team elements are very well implemented, and it’s nice being encouraged to work as a team in a game where you would otherwise do everything in your power to take your friends down. Even the game’s story mode will keep you hooked until you find out what that pesky Dodon Pa is really up to. Ultimately, Team...

Sonic Team Racing is possibly the most consistently fun kart racer since Mario 64.

When Super Mario Kart launched all the way back in 1992, mascot-based kart racing with weapons became the next big thing. Mario Kart 64 kicked it into the stratosphere and this genre was a sure fire moneymaker back in the day. For a while, every man, his dog and their mascot had a kart racing title. Yet for reasons known only to Sega, Sonic the Hedgehog had to wait 18 years to get his own kart racer via 2010’s Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing. Compared to its peers All Stars Racing was faster,...

A spirited attempt at innovation and some competent driving mechanics are not enough to escape the shadow of either Mario Kart or the previous Sonic & Sega racers.

Team Sonic Racing, despite carrying a tidbit of fun, doesn't stand up to other kart racers today

While Team Sonic Racing maintains the core kart racing gameplay you know and love intertwined with fun new team-based mechanics, a laundry list of the best race types are left entirely out of local play with friends, instead being only available in Team Adventure and online modes, which partially runs what is still a good game off the track before the finish line.

Team Sonic Racing is one of Sonic's best spinoff games to date. For the handful of problems I had with the game, I found I was easily able to overlook them because of the pure fun I had with the game. Team Sonic Racing is definitely worth checking out if you're looking for your next kart racing craze. Sonic fans can finally throw their copies of Sonic R in the firepits where they belong.

We all love Mario Kart. At the same time, we all hate Mario Kart. This love/hate relationship is fueled by every stinking moment spent watching helplessly as our karts spin out of control, eating shell after shell as the rubber-banding AI catches up and knocks a top racer to the end of the line. Meanwhile, that one friend in the group who manages to pull ahead early enough gets to keep that spot as they cruise so far ahead nobody has a chance to ever catch up. Mario Kart is a fun experience marred by the ruthless zero sum game...

Sonic is no stranger to kart racers at this point, with more than a few under his belt. However, Team Sonic Racing puts an interesting twist on the formula by emphasizing co-op play, pitting four teams of three against each other in races. The good news is, for the most part, Team Sonic Racing manages to be a fun, unique kart racer, even if it’s not the best out there.

Team Sonic Racing nails what matters most: speed and finesse on the racetrack. The new team system is a fantastic evolution of the arcade racing formula that gives you a real reason to work together, and there’s a litany of customization options to keep you coming back to these excellent tracks to earn more. Even though the small roster and annoying Adventure mode story could be better, Team Sonic Racing is an addictive and inventive evolution that proves Sumo Digital is at the top of its game.

Team Sonic Racing is a strong return to form for Sumo Digital’s kart racing spin-off series. Built on a solid foundation of gameplay, the risks taken with the implementation of the team dynamic pay off big time and sets Team Sonic Racing apart from other available titles in its class. Although it could use some beefing up in terms of side content, Team Sonic Racing is a versatile experience that fans of the franchise will adore.

Team Sonic Racing does a pretty good job with the new team mechanics, but the difficulty can still be a tad rough at times. While not as bad as prior entries, it can be easy to fall behind after you've spun out, only to catch up again using a Team Ultimate, only to drop back a few spots when the opposing team does the same thing and cost you the race. Still, Sonic Team Racing is enjoyable alone and even more with friends or while playing online.

And for that reason, Team Sonic Racing is a game that should get fans of arcade racing excited. Its issues keep it from hitting the same levels as Nintendo’s rival racer, but as a package, the game offers plenty of drifting thrills and enough competitive racing, especially with its emphasis on teamwork, to keep players entertained for a good time. It is also a great option when you need a game to play with friends at home on the same couch.

The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise was built on a foundation of speed. That longstanding marriage lends itself well to the racing genre. Team Sonic Racing carries on the legacy of the Sega All-Stars Racing series from last generation, but adds new team-based mechanics and a sole focus on characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog universe. While the new teamwork elements create unique ways to compete on the speedway, they don’t elevate the experience enough to rise above the middling racing action.

Team Sonic Racing is an absolute blast as a local multiplayer game. The team based mechanics offer an injection of fresh and exciting ideas into an otherwise stagnating genre, making it a must-play for fans of the series. The online races can be a little chaotic at times, but with a bit of patience and a lot of luck, there's plenty of fun to be had here.
