The Ascent looks and feels great to play. It could have better stability, but overall, runs like a charm!

The Ascent was originally released as a timed exclusive on Xbox Series X in July 2019 and we loved it then. Now, the timed exclusivity is over and The Ascent is making the trek over to PlayStation 5. While the game is essentially the same game as when it originally launched, there have been some significant updates, additions and patches to the Xbox version over the past year – and all of that content will be available to PlayStation gamers on day one. In some ways, it was probably worth the wait! If you’re looking for a fast and fun...

A robustly entertaining cyberpunk dungeon crawler wrapped up in some of the most sublime audiovisual presentation and thoroughly satisfying combat to come along in a good while, though it isn't quite as ambitious as I would like it to be, the Ascent is nonetheless a fantastically entertaining offering that will appeal to genre fans of cyberpunk settings and dungeon crawlers alike.

I went into this experience excited and positive for some more awesome Cyberpunk worlds, technology, and lore and just quickly found myself frustrated with the game’s inability to stick the landing. There are lots of things to like about this game in a vacuum, but when it all comes together to try and do its thing, it starts to fall short quickly and fails to provide you with many compelling reasons to continue with it.

The Ascent succeeds at delivering an action-shooter with challenging enemies and a diverse set of levels to explore. This is bolstered by a rich universe that’s practically bursting with interesting lore at every seam. Despite some wonkiness with the in-game map layout, it’s a quite enjoyable experience, especially if you decide to go online and team up with friends. The Ascent is a vastly impressive first outing for Neon Giant, and one that sets the bar high for the studio’s future endeavors.

The Ascent looks and acts like a video game, but mostly feels like work.

Jason took the latest action RPG, The Ascent, for a spin in our latest RPG Files review. How does the frenetic, fast-paced action hold up? Here is our full review.

Despite my complaints, though, I legitimately love the world Neon Giant has crafted here and would love to see even more of it. There’s loads of potential in this setting for straight-up better stories to be told, and I think The Ascent itself is kept from greatness from a lot of jank, technical issues, and weird design decisions. All that said, I think once I get my hands on a Steam Deck, I’m absolutely going to treat that as an excuse to go back for more. Hopefully, by then, they’ll have a lot of the technical issues addressed.

Overall, The Ascent is a great addition to the cyberpunk genre. The graphics are stunning, the characters and story entertaining, and it’s available right now on Gamepass!

Its skyline is happy to quote at length from Blade Runner, but the poetry is in short supply.

In the first three days of getting the review code I put nearly 30 hours into The Ascent. Not because I had to, in fact, I had nearly a week before launch. I simply couldn’t stop playing because it was so ridiculously fun. Even now with the full release here all I want to do is play through it again and again. At $30 US it is a steal, but it’s also available day one on Game Pass. Stunning graphics, excellent music, innovative gameplay, and so many other factors come together to not only make one of the best releases...

Cyberpunk gorefest that's brutal, intense, and incredibly fun in co-op.

The Ascent is for the most part a polished experience that's tons of fun to play and behold. The narrative will carry you along to many interesting places with different baddies to fry, though a few encounters feature enemies that are pure bullet sponges. You will need to pick the right equipment and keep up with leveling, but these issues can be overcome. Hardware requirements shouldn't hold you back too much, and glitches are few and far between. The overall quality makes this one a must pl...

Neon Giant is a new indie studio formed back in 2015 by industry veterans behind some of our favourite games; DOOM, Bulletstorm, and Gears of War to name a few. Now their first game has arrived in the form of The Ascent, a futuristic cyberpunk twin-stick shooter that proves to be an excellent debut game for the new studio.

A chaotic cyberpunk action game from only 12 people, The Ascent is Neon Giant‘s ambitious first game as a studio. It’s coming to us from industry veterans who had previously worked on titles like Bulletstorm, DOOM, Gears of War, and the newer Wolfenstein games – and it shows. The Ascent throws players into a metropolis in turmoil, full of unique characters and thrilling encounters. While it’s not perfect, what is on offer here is one of the best twin-stick shooters of the year and the...

From the iconic works of Philip K. Dick to the seminal table-top RPG by Mike Pondsmith, fans of the cyberpunk genre are familiar with the theme of characters in search of an identity and purpose. The Ascent suffers from a similar identity crisis in its attempts to pull from dungeon-crawling RPGs and twin-stick shooters, but it never ascends to the heights of either genre. This mindlessly fun co-op experience features bombastic gunplay, engaging cybernetic abilities, and a visually impressive world to wreak havoc in.

The Ascent nails the cyberpunk aesthetic but doesn't really attempt to capitalise on its themes of corporate slavery. The solid audiovisuals and competent action-RPG twin-stick shooter hybrid gameplay manage to glue the experience together, even when glaring flaws such as lacklustre quest design and an overreliance on backtracking threaten to derail it.

A grim, dystopian future shock, The Ascent is an action-packed ARPG brimming with guns and ultra-violence. It's enormous fun, especially in co-op, but bothersome bugs and repetitive quests unfortunately put a dampener on things.

You better have to choose if it’s worth spending your spare cash, because it might not be the game for you and it might be for others.

While The Ascent is a true visual showcase for the Xbox Series X, it lacks depth and clarity. There's a fun game in here, but it's ultimately overburdened.

The Ascent delivers on every promise. The combat is fast-paced, challenging, and explosive. The environment is gorgeous, gritty, and dark. Everything about the cyberpunk theme screams out for attention. If you're a fan of twin-stick style shooters and the thematics of the cyberpunk universe, The Ascent offers an exciting and rewarding adventure that is worth every second.

It gets off to a slow start, but once you've found a few weapons and augmentations The Ascent offers fun top-down action and a stunning cyberpunk world to explore.

The Ascent is a tough game to recommend for solo players in its current state. Its buggy, tedious at its best and utterly frustrating at its worst. While I'm sure playing with friends will resolve some of my chief complaints, more fundamental issues like a rather boring overworld can't be fixed with a few laughs with friends.

A deeply disappointing co-op shooter that squanders its excellent graphics on a bland and repetitive attempt to make a sci-fi Diablo.

A few balance issues and questionable combat encounters do not mar an otherwise solid and memorable cyberpunk action-RPG experience.

The Ascent has got all the grimy character that you would want from its sci-fi cyberpunk setting, and there's a great combat system to go with it. Simply put, The Ascent deserves your attention.
