The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword gets plenty of hate these days as a late release on the Wii when most people had gotten over motion controls. Many argue this Zelda entry hasn’t aged well, especially compared to a game-changing masterpiece like Breath of the Wild, or even two other games also released in 2011, Skyrim and Dark Souls, which are still considered all-timers.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is bound to impress all but the most skeptical of Nintendo and Zelda fans. It is a game that ties the last five years of Nintendo philosophy and development into a (massive, sprawling, epic) neat little bow. Skyward Sword is, quite simply, one of the best video games to come out of Nintendo this year.

This is the Wii game we've been waiting for. Through all of the mini-games and odd sports collections, many wondered if and when Nintendo would ever find a way to deliver a deeper experience that still fulfilled on Wii's limitless potential. Skyward Sword makes good on that promise.

To celebrate the 10 year anniversary of its release, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword has finally come to Nintendo Switch. It's time to practice your flying and dust off your puzzle skills, as this is not an adventure for the faint of heart.

The visuals of Skyward Sword HD are impressive for a remaster of a Wii game, which partially comes down to the timeless style it has. It’s a mix between the colors of Wind Waker and the more realistic proportions of Twilight Princess, and it looks swell all-around. The music is also remarkable, with a lot of tracks that stand out as some of the best in the series. From the welcoming tone of Skyloft’s theme to Ghirahim’s imposing melody, almost every track in the game is memorable. The main theme is particularly nice, and the fact that it’s Zelda’s Lullaby backwards is still cool a decade later.

Skyward Sword HD improves upon nearly every part of the original game that has not aged so gracefully. Although there are still some minor aspects that don’t feel up to par with the standards of a Legend of Zelda game, the outstanding moments of Skyward Sword HD easily make up for it.

Skyward Sword HD is definitely the best version of the game with vastly improved visuals and new control options, but I can’t help but feel it's lacking as a Zelda rerelease. There’s no new content, and I doubt the changes are enough to win over those who have problems with the game’s overall design. It certainly didn’t need to be a good game in its own right, but the lack of accessibility options and only somewhat reduced dialogue makes it difficult to justify the price.

Overall, the Skyward Sword HD remaster is an excellent game worth playing despite some of it’s flaws. There are some quality of life improvements throughout that may not stick out as obviously as you would expect, but they really help the game play a bit more like a modern game despite the janky controls. It may not be as beloved as Link to the Past or Ocarina of Time, but Skyward Sword is absolutely a game worth your time.

A simple control scheme concession elevates this new version of Skyward Sword from simple HD remaster to essential playing for anyone that dismissed the original for its love affair with waggle. Here's a top-tier 3D Zelda, freed of its shake-to-win shackles and ready to be appreciated anew for its timeless tale and awesome adventuring.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword introduces full motion control to synchronize player movements with Link's actions while offering the most intuitive play control of any game in The Legend of Zelda franchise to date.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is one of the least lauded main entries of the franchise. It just didn’t resonate with fans the way A Link to the Past or Ocarina of Time do. Other Zelda titles, like Wind Waker, have had the same issues in the past. However, unlike that game, which is now rated among the franchise’s best, Skyward Sword is still an odd one out.

Skyward Sword HD on Switch still suffers from backtracking and gimmicks, but its clever dungeons and engaging narrative make it one of the best games in the series.

Skyward Sword, often the forgotten child when reminiscing about The Legend of Zelda’s 3D catalogue, is the last in line to be given a makeover. Anchored with motion controls that finally delivered the original promise of the Wii – requiring the MotionPlus add-on – it seemed destined to be confined to outdated hardware forever, whereas the other 3D Zelda games had easily managed to jump between generations. To celebrate the series’ 35th anniversary, Nintendo has freed Skyward Sword fro...

Warm up your sword arm and prepare for adventure in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD for Nintendo Switch, a remaster of the 2011 title for the Wii. This is a traditional Zelda game through and through, complete with an overworld to explore, puzzles to solve, and dungeons to clear of nasty monsters and epic bosses.

Skyward Sword was never my favorite Zelda game. Nintendo’s Wii-era take on its beloved franchise introduced motion controls that left me both flustered and annoyed during combat. At the same time, Skyward Sword’s dungeon and boss design remain some of the best the series has to offer. Skyward Sword HD revives this divisive game and papers over some of the original's biggest flaws. One of the most notable additions is a new button-only control scheme that allows players to experience the game without flailing their arms. Unfortunately, Skyward Sword’s overall structure remains largely the same, and its abundance of fetch quests means that this is still a game of dramatic peaks and valleys.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD is an adventure worth taking, a chance to reevaluate one of the largest and most experimental games in the series' history.

July 14, 2021 Read Review

Zelda: Skyward Sword was a weird game to assess in 2011, much less today. It had a lot of great ideas undercut by some questionable design choices, but to some, it was the best Zelda ever made. I understand that $60 for a remaster of a 2011 game is a big ask, but this is the definitive version of a flawed yet fun adventure that should be part of any Zelda rotation.

Not every Zelda game is equally beloved by fans, but with time almost every entry in the series finds a passionate audience. Games that divided fans at launch like Majora’s Mask and Wind Waker are now considered beloved classics. One game that hasn’t really benefited from such a re-evaluation is The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Response to the game was muted when it was first released back in 2011 and its reputation hasn’t improved much since then. If anything, it’s declined further, particularly given the enthusiastic critical and fan response to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

I have a complicated history with Skyward Sword. I love the Zelda franchise with my whole heart, but I had a terrible time with this entry. The motion controls, the level design, the constant handholding, all of it rubbed my nerves raw. By the end, I was persisting out of sheer stubbornness. This time was different, however. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD looks familiar, but it feels like a whole new game. Without the crushing burden of motion controls and endless updates from Fi, this is a pretty dang decent Zelda game.

Out of all “mainline” Zelda titles, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword was the only I hadn’t played prior to tackling this Switch version. I was one of the four people in the world who didn’t have a Wii back in the day, nor did I exactly feel like re-buying it on the Wii U years later. It just stood there, waiting for me to play it, even though I really wasn’t keen on tackling a stupidly lengthy adventure with mandatory motion controls in around 2016-ish. I knew it was considered th...

None of this is to say there aren’t issues, and I do think that Skyward Sword is aging less gracefully than Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. Part of the problem is the motion controls, and I’ve done a separate video to discuss my issues with those, but here I’ll say that they’ve always been divisive, and I’ve always sat on the side that wasn’t enamoured by them, but as time has gone on the superficiality of those motion controls is becoming more and more clear. There is nothing in Skyward Sword that couldn’t have been just as exhilarating with b…
