Each of the game’s heroes offer up a different experience throughout the game’s four chapters. In one scene you might be digging underneath trenches to escape aerial bombardment, and then, as another character, you’ll be running bull true through a battlefield peppered by gunfire, propelled by blood lust. Valiant Hearts paces itself nicely, never letting one hero’s feel overstay its welcome, mixing them up quite frequently.

Valiant Hearts is a confused game, but also a brave one tackling difficult subject matter.

Valiant Hearts: The Great War is a puzzle adventure game developed by Ubisoft Montpellier and published by Ubisoft. The game is inspired by letters written in WW1 taking you on an emotional gripping story about sacrifice, love, survival and friendship. It centers around 4 characters and a dog all on the battlefield, where they all connect together throughout the story to help a young German soldier named Karl find his wife and child.

Instead of simply running you through various battles of World War I, Valiant Hearts: The Great War uses the story of a French family to build a better understanding of the broader historical importance. This personal story serves as the perfect framing device for the game’s documentary-style presentation. While there are a few missteps and areas where it could have been stronger, it is a beautiful and well-executed game that offers a unique glimpse into one of the deadliest wars in human history.

Valiant Hearts: The Great War tells the story of four people whose lives come together as they all search for different things during World War I, aka, The Great War. The story begins in 1914 as the war is about to break out. Karl, one of our main characters, is deported from France since he’s German, breaking up his family. His father-in-law, Emile, is soon called up by the French forces to fight on the front lines. Emile is injured in battle and becomes a POW where Karl’s unit is stationed. Karl is working for the infamous Baron Von Dorf...

Valiant Hearts: The Great War delivers a moving story that will surely leave an impression on you. The UbiART engine delivers another great artistic showpiece telling a story through animation, a powerful and harrowing musical score and documentary-like narration. Valiant Hearts doesn't depict what war may have been like, it makes you feel it.

There are hundreds upon hundreds of games about war. Yet despite the subject matter’s ubiquity, there is a distinct lack of variety in the way it’s handled: you shoot people, you sneak behind people so you can stab them in the back, or you slaughter countless people with the press of a single button. These gleeful and fetishized acts of violence are the hallmarks of a pervasively popular genre. But Valiant Hearts: The Great War isn’t about any of these things. It doesn’t care about headshots or kill-streaks, and it certainly has no interest in making you feel like an...

Valiant Hearts is confident in its direction and thoughtful in its design. As a puzzle-focused, story-driven experience it isn't going to be for everyone, but those who relish the days of LucasArts' point-and-click adventures will certainly find a lot to enjoy here — doubly so if you are a history buff. The puzzles are clever, the story is moving, the music is haunting, and the characters are well-realized. But most of all, Valiant Hearts is yet another triumph for the UbiArt Framework, which continues to impress at nearly every turn. This game is absolutely gorgeous, even as it depicts the...

Valiant Hearts: The Great War is, to use a topical analogy, a game of two halves. One half is serious, with heart-breaking voice overs, battlefield massacres and historical facts, while the other half features comedic bad guys, platforming and a dog that does a “Lassie” and yaps at the heroes to alert them of the game’s equivalent of Timmy being stuck down a well.

There’s not many video games that treat war with the respect its participants deserve. Metal Gear is too preachy and ham-fisted while Call of Duty & Medal of Honour are bombastic dude-fests disinterested in reality. Valiant Hearts, by using the war as a backdrop and avoiding too much direct conflict, pays tribute to the 16 million that perished in The Great War 100 years ago and does it with humour, pathos and melancholy.

Valiant Hearts focuses on how lives are torn apart, how strangers become saviors, and how madness thrives. It’s a small-scale human perspective of the war, which tries to salvage those little acts of love and heroism from a world overwhelmed by violence. There’s not much of a challenge or a reason to revisit once you’ve finished, but the story alone is worth experiencing. Ultimately, it’s a game about warfare that’s more interested in the people and their experiences, than bullets and their targets. I could’ve done without some of the footnotes and heavy-handed narration, but it remains a beautiful, harrowing...

I don’t want to give too much away, but Valiant Hearts: The Great War is significant in many ways. It not only gives us a rewarding and engaging way to see the horrors of war as it pertains to this particular likable cast of characters, but it also educates us on one of the most significant events in history. Ubisoft Montpellier could have just delivered a good game and called it a day, but they went above and beyond the call of duty to add context to the proceedings, and that is quite the commendable effort.

War is hell, that’s what we’re told. But in games, that’s a big fat lie. Plumes of blood erupting from enemy skulls, bodies flying through the air, huge explosions - as weird as it sounds, that’s the good stuff. Video game wars aren’t hell, they’re heaven for the wannabe Rambo in all of us.
