With Windjammers 2, Dotemu has taken the fiendishly addictive core formula of the Neo Geo classic and improved upon it in every way. The core gameplay here remains as immediately endearing as ever whilst being enhanced and given a real strategic kick by a bevvy of new moves and skills that add to the fun without detracting from or overcomplicating proceedings. Yes, there's not much in the way of modes, and we've yet to see how online fares here, but this is another banger from Dotemu, an all-time classic improved upon, an arcade classic refined for a new generation.

To say I was a fan of the original Windjammers would be a lie. I have never played it nor seen it in the wild, and that’s coming from someone who grew up in a city with at least two Neo Geo cabinets per block. Which is a bummer, as I love the style and gameplay from most Neo Geo sports titles. There’s something about that hardware that makes its sports games beyond charming. Nevertheless, I wanted to give Windjammers 2 a go. If anything, I wanted to check it out as it was being made by Do...

At its core, Windjammers is an addictive, colorful, and vibrant experience that is worth investing time and effort in. The online could be better, but this is a great, faithful port of the 1994 original updated to today’s standards. It’s definitely worth a look for both local multiplayer and retro enthusiasts alike.

Windjammers 2 will combine everything fans love about the classic title with entirely hand-drawn 2D animations to create the ultimate windjamming experience.

Overall, Windjammers 2 is a massive success that fans of the franchise will surely enjoy and those new to the game will quickly understand why the fans of the original game love it. The lack of game modes with meaningfully different gameplay is unquestionably disappointing. Yet, the core gameplay is just so good and addictive that hours will pass in the blink of an eye.

Do you love the 90’s? Do you even remember the 90’s? If not, that’s totally fine! Windjammers 2 is here for you either way. This hyper-vibrant sports game presents a sleek, sexy look at the most extreme decade. Sort of! Mostly you get a vertical slice of the flying disc phenomenon. If you find yourself pining for those wraparound shades, blistering neon tank tops, and extreme font choices, then you’re in good hands. Furthermore, this is the platonic ideal of disc-based sports. From the aesthetic to the execution, Windjammers 2 is the purest form of this simple idea. Also it’s really fun!

Windjammers 2 captures the excitement of the arcade original and caters heavily to existing fans, but fails to translate that fun to players stepping onto the court for the first time.

Speaking of power, each of the 10 characters has a super move, for every perfect catch, spike, throw or lob you will build up your power gauge and unleash these stylistic and devastating finishers. These are a fun addition to the game and if saved and utilized at the right time they can provide satisfaction and easy points. Super moves can be defended but not as easily as the regular ones.

Windjammers 2 is a fast and fun arcade style game that fans of the original and competitive vs games will enjoy. But the game is very light on single player content, so unless you want to play against others online or with friends, you probably won't get much out of the light arcade mode.

Dotemu has a crafted a sharp, stylish, and satisfying sequel to a sporting classic.

The biggest offender is that there’s not even a training mode to jump into, which for a game as particular as Windjammers is, seems a bit unforgivable. To learn how to play there’s just a quick slideshow you have to memorize as you can’t refer to it while in a game, and you basically have to hope you’re pulling off the moves correctly. There’s just no way to sit there and get comfortable with the mechanics at your own pace, and its exclusion is kind of confusing considering how much of a staple the mode is. Sure, you could easily square up against bots a bunch, but that won’t give you the satisfaction of knowing you’re pulling off the moves correctly.

Windjammers 2 is here and it is fantastic. The game’s presentation is another highlight of Dotemu’s always incredible-looking catalogue of published titles and I love the blend of new and returning characters, courts, moves, and music. Mix this with a great online system and a versatile array of ways to play against humans or bots and it could end up being one of the most standout sports titles of the year. It wasn’t entirely without jank. It’s difficulty in Arcade mode will grind newcomers into diamond dust and I wish it had a proper training mode. However, Windjammers 2 still operates incredibly well and hits a blend of artistic style and competitive arcade intensity like no other. See you at the podium, challengers.

A cracking sequel to a cult arcade classic, Windjammers 2 ups the ante with sharp hand-drawn visuals and more than a modicum of pure arcade panache. The idea of Pong (with frisbees, mind you) turned up to 11 has never been so appealing.

But it’s also $20, which I think is the right price if a sequel is exactly what you’re looking for. It’s also made with a scoop of love for the original title, which comes across in its faithfulness and overall appearance. Dotemu obviously put a lot of effort into pleasing fans, but it’s going to be that particular player-base that makes the final assessment on whether or not it’s a disc worth catching. The best I can do is tell you that it’s at least worth the sand in your shoes.

Windjammers 2 is finally going to come around! It’s the sequel to the NEO GEO title and it’s been almost 30 years in the making. Dotemu has promoted this game constantly and given it a great push that caught the eyes of the FGC. Is that attention warranted? Well, let’s start this review off because while I do have a lot to say, it may not be on the subjects the usual gaming audience might focus on.

While it’s been a while since a lot of us have spent any time in an arcade, Windjammers 2 is bringing the experience home with a single aerodynamic lob shot. It’s a sequel to the acclaimed Windjammers and it’s bringing back the stylized flying disc game with a fresh coat of paint. For a game that looks simple, there’s actually quite a lot of skill involved. It’s a juiced-up air hockey match, though that’s putting it mildly when the matches are as fast-paced as they are in the Wind...

The folks at DotEmu obviously cared about what they were doing here, and that by itself is worth consideration. They wanted to put out at least a worthy sequel, and I feel like they did that at bare minimum. This game is not a drastic evolution of its forebears, nor did it have to be. Those looking for a fun pick up and play game will find a lot to love here, and with good reason. Windjammers 2 is a worthy sequel, and a damned fun multiplayer experience.

An admirable refresh of a cult classic, with excellent presentation and thoughtfully implemented new mechanics, but it’s held back by its reluctance to modernise in other areas.

This is the sequel that every Windjammers fan has been waiting for, a tight, gorgeous over-the-top sports game filled with arcade thrills and not an ounce of fat. That lack of poundage though can be a curse though, as while everything is here a delicious treat there’s too little to munch on in order to make Windjammers 2 an essential purchase.

Existing fans of the Windjammers series will absolutely love Windjammers 2 – no doubt about it. Newcomers willing to put the effort in to learn its mechanics will find a lot to enjoy, too. It’s just a shame that its single-player offerings are so slight, and the AI isn’t much fun to go up against. Multiplayer is the highlight here, and if you do plan on playing against friends, family and/or strangers, you’ll get way more than your money’s worth.

They just don’t make them like this anymore, do they? French outfit DotEmu is fast establishing itself as retro revival specialists, and Windjammers 2 is another immaculate effort from the Streets of Rage 4 studio. This game of Frisbee blends the best of Pong and Street Fighter to make for a white-knuckle reboot of Data East’s legendary NeoGeo disc flinger, and if you’re looking for a game that’s easy to pick-up but incredibly challenging to master, then it should be top of your list.
