At last, it’s the intoxicating escape I once thought it was and stands out, to me, as the premiere role-playing resort in what might very well be a modern golden age for the genre.

When Cyberpunk 2077 was released in 2020 it was a really divisive game, launching in a terrible state and under-delivering in multiple areas. However, it was also just a good time, with a surprisingly touching story and great core gameplay. Overall, it was a really good game that didn’t hit its potential. Over the past two years though, massive progress has been made to make it a truly great game (albeit with some flaws still), and Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty marks the end of this chapter.

Cyberpunk 2077 had an awful reputation three years ago but CD Projekt Red’s efforts to fix it and the exceptional content found in Phantom Liberty more than redeem this futuristic RPG.

The pantheon of games to make this journey is small, though No Man’s Sky is probably the most common example. After an undeniably bumpy introduction, the CD Projekt Red team has put in the work over the past three years to give Cyberpunk 2077 the glow-up it too deserves… culminating in the revolutionary update 2.0 and new Phantom Liberty DLC.

I'm not a big fan of Cyberpunk 2077, but Phantom Liberty totally stole my heart. It has a great plot, great emotions, and is really memorable. That said, it's just average in terms of gameplay.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty represents the best the game has to offer. The main quest is tense and thrilling, with amazing characters played by fantastic actors and twists around every corner. Every quest gives you something unique and interesting to do, including side quests. Dogtown is gorgeous, deadly, and deep.

Since its disastrous launch in 2020, developer CD Projekt Red has delivered critical updates to Cyberpunk 2077 to align it more closely to the original vision, but Phantom Liberty, coupled with the free Update 2.0, is its biggest yet. This new expansion trades in the high-octane mercenary vibes of Cyberpunk 2077 for a more subdued spy thriller, and offers a well-made trove of new ways to experience Night City. The expansion features a great cast of personalities, all well-performed, even if some are underused. Interacting with those characters across new gigs and jobs in the added Dogtown district is good fun throughout. A few twists and turns, narratively and mechanically, make Phantom Liberty feel unique within the broader swath of stories to experience in Cyberpunk 2077.

In that sense, Phantom Liberty is Cyberpunk 2077 distilled. If you enjoyed the base game, it’s hard to see you being dissatisfied with this expansion. And even if you aren’t enticed by any of the new content on offer, Update 2.0 has brought net improvements to the overall gameplay that make it more than worth taking another trip through Night City.

Ultimately, whether or not you should pick up Phantom Liberty depends on whether you want to immerse yourself in yet another engaging Cyberpunk story, this time with more of an espionage tinge. You certainly get a lot of bang for your buck here; completing everything that’s on offer will surely take a significant amount of time, and there are rewards and additional items that you can carry over to the main game. But even if you don’t pick up Phantom Liberty straight away, it’s worth jumping into Cyberpunk 2077 if you haven’t already done so thanks to the changes introduced via update 2.0. And if you’re revisiting the title, it might even be worth simply starting again from scratch. Cyberpunk 2077 may not have had the best start, but CD Projekt Red has taken criticism to heart and not only delivered an outstanding expansion, but also improved the base game into a state that should have even its harshest critics paying attention.

It's an incredible expansion that boasts a gripping story, compelling characters, engaging moment-to-moment gameplay, and significantly improved progression mechanics. It's so good that it uplifts all of Cyberpunk 2077, finally making good on the lofty promises CD Projekt RED made for the base game all those years ago.

I’m only saddened by the fact that this is the only expansion Cyberpunk 2077 is receiving. But I’m glad the studio has gone all out with it, incorporating so much feedback over the years to make the very game we’ve dreamt about. Whatever lies next for CDPR, well, that’s something only the studio knows for sure, but whatever it is, I hope they’ll take the lessons they’ve learned to heart with Cyberpunk 2077 because if they do, they’re looking at a bright future.

Cyberpunk 2077 had an unfortunate launch and as a result there are many who have written off a game that should have been remembered as being one of the top games of 2020. It's a shame because with all the patches, fixes and updates, the game seems to be running how it should have at launch. Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty delivers a massive amount of new content which is at the same high level of quality. The main story in Phantom Liberty is engrossing to the point I was hesitant about what choices to make because I had become invested in the characters. The missions themselves were cinematic in the best possible way, whether it was fighting for our lives in a burning warzone or trying to gather intel at a swanky party. Those who have already enjoyed Cyberpunk 2077 will find just as much enjoyment here, and those who were interested but hesitant due to the tech issues will find a great opportunity to give this game a second chance.

Cyberpunk 2077 in its 2.0 form and with Phantom Liberty finally in place, feels like a game reborn. This is every bit the experience we wanted back in 2020, a deep and addictive action RPG that can now sit alongside The Witcher 3 as one of the greats. We've had our ups and downs with this one, oh boy it's been a rollercoaster, but entirely reworked skills and perks, refined and refreshed combat, retooled loot and menu systems and a cracking new slice of CDPR narrative magic makes for a game that we're finally able to recommend wholeheartedly. They've only gone and bloody done it.

Though not immediately perfect, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty hones and improves upon the base game in a way few other DLC expansions could hope to. Newcomers will find a complete package of a game to dig into, while long-time fans can look forward to a finishing touch that makes the whole experience that much more worthwhile.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is, quite simply, a must-play. With an engaging narrative and fascinating new locale, this thoroughly gripping expansion will be sure to delight anyone looking to dive back into Night City.
