When it’s great, Daemon X Machina is a fast and frenetic mech action game with deep customisation options and a killer artistic direction that sets it apart from the rest. But when it’s not, it’s repetitive mission structure, nonsensical story and facile combat stop it from being the best it could be.

Overall this title may not blow your socks off, but it’s definitely worth giving a go if you enjoy games of this genre. Whilst there are negatives I pointed out in this review, it is still a decent mech game and gives you a decent lengthy game of killing robots.

Since the launch of Daemon X Machina, fans of mech games and anime alike have created a cult following of Marvelous Inc. and FIRST STUDIO’s love letter to mechs. The PC version of the game is just as much of a hit classic as it was on the Nintendo Switch, but the controls on PC make it easier to aim and allow for ideal key and mouse button bindings. Although the HORI Nintendo Switch Split Pad Pro allowed the most dedicated Daemon X Machina fans the optimal mech experience on the Switch, using your favorite mouse and a gaming keyboard...

Back in just September of 2019, the excellent Daemon x Machina was introduced onto the Switch. Despite its shortcomings, we found it to be an excellent mech shooter. In a big surprise, a PC port of the game was announced. But does it fix any of the issues of the original release?

If you like the trailer, you are almost certainly going to like this game. If you like the concepts, you are almost certainly going to like this game. It knows what it wants to be and it succeeds marvelously at it. And at the end of the day, I like this game, so even with its flaws, I can’t help but feel that it deserves plenty of love for just being dang fun in exactly the way it wants.

If you do stick with Daemon X Machina, you’ll find a lengthy campaign that’s padded out with plenty of optional free missions. There are also co-op focused exploration missions that enable you to get valuable parts, and competitive multiplayer if you’re up for it. Overall, it’s quite the comprehensive package. Powering through it all will be a test for many, though. Daemon X Machina has many of the ingredients of a great mech combat game but the end result isn’t wholesome. It’s flat, lacking in flavour, and gets stale all too quickly.

Style can only go so far. A good sense of aesthetic can really carry lesser games, but there's a limit. Every time I play Daemon X Machina, listen to the music, watch a mech glide through the air, I can't help but smile. It looks striking, and the music really is a cut above when it counts. Daemon X Machina is absolutely aesthetically pleasing to look at and listen to, and that makes me wish I weren't playing, for perhaps watching would've been a better way to experience the game.

Repetition and disappointing boss encounters slightly mar a mech game with slick gameplay and brilliant customization options.

Daemon X Machina may very well be the best mech-based title ever. Unfortunately, it's far from the best game ever. The gameplay has seen major improvements throughout the development, and that's a commendable and important thing to see. However, it seems that this focus on refining the gameplay and the mechanics around each Arsenal seems to have caused the rest of the game to fall behind and ultimately act as a detriment more than a supporting piece of the overall game. Daemon X Machina won't be for everyone but cult fans of mech-based manga, anime, and video games should eat...

Mecha genre fans will find a lot to love in Daemon X Machina, but those hoping for more mainstream appeal might want to stay away. The game features an overabundance of options, mechanics, and customizations that will give it longevity, but only if you clear the initial hurdle set in front of you.

Daemon X Machina is a great mech action game in a genre that has pretty much disappeared. The combat and customization options are first rate and I never got bored with experimenting with different weaponry. This really is like a mecha anime, and it’s one I highly recommend, even if it isn’t as great as it could be.

Daemon X Machina is the newest action-packed mech game to land on the Nintendo Switch. The game desperately wants to be a spiritual successor to FromSoftware’s Armoured Core series. And with Kenichiro Tsukuda, producer of the first few entries in the Armoured Core franchise, at the helm, it’s a feat the game almost achieves. But under the hood it feels like something is missing. That behind the pretty visuals and bombastic soundtrack is nothing but a heartless, nostalgia fuelled machine....

A modern mech title that can easily be a gateway drug to hours of fast-paced action, there's nothing else quite like Daemon X Machina on Switch. While its story falls a bit short, it's still enjoyable and intriguing enough of a ride to keep up with even when confusing. It shines strongest in its amount of replayability and sheer mountain of additional content that can be unlocked. Daemon X Machina is a title that's hard to put down and is easy to get sucked in and just want to keep going further and see what other crazy things it has...

Fans of the mecha game genre finally have a reason to rejoice as Daemon X Machina is just what the doctor ordered. Lots of mecha on mecha action, tons of customization options and despite some shortcomings, this is the best Mecha game available on the consoles. If you enjoy these sorts of games, definitely don’t pass this up.

Despite that, the sum total of my experience with Daemon X Machina is positive. The combat is amazing, the game is bright and colorful, the framerate mostly holds up in either docked or handheld mode, and the hangar is great to tinker around in, checking out all the different configurations of my mech. That’s what I’m going to remember out of all of this, which is safe for me to say because most everything else in this game is pretty forgettable.

The combat is a lot of fun and the visuals are dynamic and exciting, but repetitive missions and dire storytelling ruin what is otherwise a mechanically superior giant robot game.

Multiple times in Daemon X Machina’s story characters said something along the lines of ‘what is going on,’ and that’s about the best way I can encapsulate my initial experience with the game. It’s an overwhelming experience, and while that may initially sound bad, things only get better the further you get.

The Switch is having one hell of a year for games, and while Daemon X Machina doesn’t quite rival the likes of the recent Astral Chain or Fire Emblem: Three Houses, I do consider it to be a bit of jewel where I never expected to find one. I didn’t realize how much I missed precisely this type of game until I played it, and I feel the developers have achieved what they set out to do very well. Daemon X Machina is just good old fashioned fun, with some nice twists and systems that do enough...

Daemon X Machina sets the bar for robot action games. The addictive mecha fighting is almost flawless, but it's complemented by so many other incredible parts to the game. There's a rich, unique world filled with incredible and memorable characters, endless and addictive customisation, gorgeous visuals and a jaw-dropping soundtrack. Daemon X Machina rarely stumbles, and even when it did, I still couldn't help but be impressed by this amazing new experience.

Like a mech without a pilot, Daemon X Machina is a beautiful shell with not enough to fill it. It’s a frustrating thing - simultaneously proving that there’s life in this old genre, but failing to inject much of interest beyond the base level. I was thrilled enough by the opportunity to truly micro-manage a mech for the first time in a while, but there just wasn’t enough to do with my creation once I was done tinkering.
