Dirt 5 isn’t at all the game I thought it would be. Far from a clinical rally sim, what it is is a simple, fun off-road racer that has a big personality. While it doesn’t dive too deep underneath the hood, it still tears up a huge number of tracks across a great number of race types—it does more than enough to keep players firmly in the driver’s seat.

Racing on tough terrain such as ice and mud can be quite tricky but if that is your kind of racer then here's the very cool DIRT 5.

Dirt 5 is a departure from earlier entries in the series, as it goes full arcade racer. That’s to its credit though, as the actual racing is satisfying and exciting. This means that the vehicles and their customization options feel a bit shallow, which could disappoint some fans. Thanks to an incredible Playgrounds mode and some pretty next-gen visuals, Dirt 5 is a solid offering from Developer Codemasters.

DIRT 5 is the latest by legendary UK developers Codemasters and is technically the eighth game to carry the ‘DIRT’ title. I hadn’t played any of the previous mainline games but I DID give DIRT Rally 2.0 a crack a while back and absolutely loved it. It had awesome graphics and controls. I am not usually much of a rally guy, but I did sink hours of my life tearing around the world’s rally stages and loved every minute of it.

Muddy tires, breakneck speeds, and whiplash-inducing drifts are the name of the game with Dirt 5, the latest off-road racing title from rally veterans Codemasters. Dirt 5 embraces approachable, arcade-style gameplay, enabling more players to enter the race. With a variety of events to take on, you’re never at a shortage of routes to drive and donuts to do.

DIRT 5 is a celebration of off-road racing that is crammed full with plenty of worthwhile content. It’s simplistic story while throwaway for some provides decent fun, and the variety of different racing modes ensure that the long career mode doesn’t get stale. Additional modes such as Arcade, Online and Playgrounds guarantee that even when you’ve cleared the Career that there is still plenty more entertainment to be had. Despite the occasional bumps in the road with performance and lackluster events, DIRT 5 is a great racing title that is deserving of your time.

Though the various visual modes require some work, Dirt 5 is nonetheless a breath of fresh air for the long-running rally racing franchise that widens the audience duly and marks a commendable debut for the franchise on PlayStation 5.

A blast to play, and brings back much needed separation and personality to the numbered series of DIRT games that that DiRT 4 seemed to lose by blurring the lines too much. Playground mode will absolutely keep me coming back for more to beat not just my own, but friends' times as well, because there’s nothing better than beating a time within mere hundredths and restoring bragging rights.

One of Codemasters' best racing games, DIRT 5 is an unbridled shot of adrenaline-fuelled fun that's impossible not to love. Superlative stuff.

If you’re the type of person who plays racing games for hundreds of hours, Dirt 5 might let you down and I completely understand why. But for everyone else, it’s a very accessible and personality-filled game that should keep you busy for a while.

While the Dirt Rally games are about as serious as racing sims come, Dirt 5 is a breath of colorful, arcade-y fresh air. This is a vibrant arcade racing game that lets the player decide which of its multiple racing disciplines they prefer, with Nolan North and Troy Baker affording it a level of unexpected video game voice acting royalty to boot. Throw in its deep Playgrounds Mode and Dirt 5 is a game that can keep on giving, as long as its community continues to support it.

I do wish the storytelling was handled better, but…really, most of this game’s audience isn’t coming here for a story. It’s a nice touch to tie together the game’s Career mode, but completely forgettable overall (aside from Baker’s and North’s performances).

Instead, it seems the idea here was to make an accessible, stunning, and fun-focused racing game that opens the door to new players as the next generation begins, and in that regard, Dirt 5 knocks it out of the park. Its driving is exceptionally precise, making players feel like a master behind the wheel, while the sheer variety of gorgeous, globe-hopping tracks with treacherous terrain to conquer creates a wonderfully diverse gameplay experience. It runs out of steam towards the end of its campaign and lacks much meaningful vehicle progression, but on the whole, this is one of Codemasters' most...

DIRT 5 strips away the more serious elements of the franchise and puts all its eggs in one, arcade cabinet shaped, basket. At times a riot, in other areas a little repetitive and lacking in finesse, it nevertheless delivers on the concept of an adrenaline-fueled off-road racer. It’s a game that makes you sit forward in your seat and savour the joys of jumping a Dakar Rally Peugeot 3008 over a ravine.

DIRT 5 is a new terrain for Codemasters and it's hard to say that it follows in the line of the previous series. This is meant for casual players to pick up and play and have fun. In this regard, it mostly works. On the surface, it feels like a love letter to off-road racing enthusiasts that like multiple ways to race outdoors. The varying locations mixed with varying weather and day-to-night transitions help things feel fresh. The AI, however, bogs down the experience. The Career Mode ends up being a repetitive experience that features a podcast that feels tacked...

Putting it all together, Dirt 5 is a content-rich, diverse arcade racing game that is unlike anything else among racing titles this year. Codemasters’ new direction in the Dirt franchise might not be what veteran off-road enthusiasts would’ve expected. Still, Dirt 5 accomplishes its mission of expanding to a broader audience with engaging arcade-y gameplay, and sets the series off on an exciting new path.

It's fun, easy to get into, full of variety, looks pretty, and features cars that slide beautifully around corners. Dirt 5 is a feel-good game at feel-bad time, which is about the best time for it to exist.

That lack of challenge and sense of progression won't be for everyone, and might even put off Dirt veterans, but Dirt 5's a varied and beautiful racing game that's a blast from event number one.

A series of playsets to Forza Horizon's big open toybox. A fun and flashy arcade racer that's easy to pick up and play, but much, much harder to put down again.

With beautiful visuals, excellent controls, and a ton of content, Dirt 5 has a lot to offer players, especially with how lenient and easy-going the game's structure is.

Codemasters have earned my trust. Whatever they decide to come up with, I’m always going to look forward to playing it. They deserve this seal of approval after countless F1 games that just keep getting better and better, as well as other titles such as the criminally underappreciated gem that was Onrush. That’s why, even if DIRT 5 looked way different than its predecessors, boasting a “cooler”, more stylish coat of paint that reminded me of other unnecessary rebellious titles like Fa...

DIRT 5 is one of the most joy-inducing racing games of this generation. Nothing quite compares to hurtling around a muddy track in an exotic locale, using the handbrake to get the back end out around sharp corners and trading paint with opponents as you fight for positions, all while navigating bumps and breath-taking jumps. The dirt being thrown up by tyres realistically accumulating on your vehicle until it’s a mess only adds to spectacle of it all. This is a showy game, but one that also has perfectly-honed physics, making it challenging but accessible to all. And while some...

Even with an enhanced version on the horizon that includes 120 fps with the arrival of next generation consoles, Dirt 5 delivers a fantastic off-road racing experience full of content that will keep you busy not only on the track, but also off with the addition of the new Playgrounds arena editor. Considering there is a free upgrade to the next-gen version as well, there is no reason not to go ahead and pick this one up if you were at all interested, especially if you are a fan of the franchise.

Dirt 5 represents a complete about-face for the main Dirt series, shedding virtually all semblance of simulation in favour of an unabashed, arcade-inspired racing experience that draws from just about every influence you can name except its direct predecessor. It’s not especially deep, and there isn’t as much variety in the career mode as it claims, but it’s fast, frantic, and extremely handsome, and the wild and wacky stunt track editor truly has its hooks in me.
