Sometimes, I've played a few games and thought, "This would make a good film". Other times, I've been watching a film and thought, "I want to play a game based on this now". Fort Solis is something new that sits somewhere in the thought pattern of "why isn't this a film, because it may as bloody well have been". Described in its Steam page blurb as "Like a Netflix series", I'm not sure if developers Fallen Leaf Studio and Black Drakkar Games understand the connotations that brings because while there are some excellent series on Netflix, there is some utter...

Fort Solis is a game that you will remember for the suspense it instills and the immersion it conveys. The environments are beautiful and stunning, reflecting the technological future on Mars. By highlighting the relationship between Jack and Jessica, you never truly feel alone. While the game does have its flaws, it doesn’t completely overshadow the thrilling experience. It’s a story where the heightened tension and emotions manage to cover up the flaws of the game. But when you calm down and think about what you experienced, you can’t help but notice that some aspects could have been better.

The Unreal Engine 5 is finally here, and we’re finally seeing a plethora of games featuring it being released in the wild. Layers of Fear and Remnant II are two main examples, but what I really wanted to see was a small studio handling the power offered by Epic Games’ brand new engine. What would be the brand new standard for ambitious indie development with such tools? Fort Solis, by Fallen Leaf, is today’s test subject.

We tell you, it’s a good game! It’s not average! It might have some problems here and there, but you have to admit it is a “Good” game.

There is something calming about a clichéd sci-fi horror, isn’t there? Abandoned space stations, eerie corridors, and the endless possibilities of danger make up a genre that has successfully infiltrated just about every format of entertainment. Fort Solis is just the latest, bringing with it a subdued sci-fi tale, voice acting royalty in the form of Roger Clark (Red Dead Redemption 2) and Troy Baker (The Last of Us), and a gameplay experience that is in parts enthralling and others excruciatingly tedious.

Fallen Leaf's space thriller tells a topical story of human ingenuity and hubris alike.

Though light on engaging gameplay mechanics (and gameplay in general), Fort Solis is an accomplished narrative experience. Boasting a compelling story, an atmospheric setting, and excellent acting performances, it's an accomplished first outing for indie studio Fallen Leaf.

The notion of what defines a game is constantly in flux. A decade or two ago, games as narrative vehicles were very much in their infancy. Today, the so-called Walking Simulator is an undeniable part of the story of gaming. Are they ‘games’? Yes. Not in the same way Baldur’s Gate 3 is a game, mind you, but games nonetheless. Fort Solis is absolutely a walking simulator. The first effort from new studio Fallen Leaf, Fort Solis tells the story of Jack Leary and Jessica Appleton: two engineers working a Martian colony 50 years in the future.

Fort Solis' strengths are quite apparent from the get-go. It's a short, interactive thriller with a great cast, jaw-dropping visuals, and some frantic moments tucked in between. It has a great premise, and the slow exploration-based gameplay has its appeal. However, shallow writing and inconsequential QTEs make it an unfulfilling thriller experience.

It feels strange to put gameplay at the bottom of the list for any video game, but Fort Solis clearly made performance and visuals a priority. With a cast consisting of two video game A-listers, the game showcases what a difference hiring talented people can have on the impact of a story. Disappointing conclusion aside, the visuals, tone, and the acting are strong enough to satisfy some people. However, the gameplay is rarely fun and occasionally frustrating, even if the mood is tense and the desire to see more is compelling. Fort Solis is a hard game to recommend for...

Fort Solis aims for big-budget horror but fails to deliver on all fronts. I don’t mind short games in the slightest, in fact, I welcome them, but Fort Solis felt like four hours of my life I will not get back. Unless you have money to throw away, you should probably give this one a miss.

Fort Solis presents a thrilling story with fantastic visuals, exceptional voice acting, and heart pounding suspense. What it may lack in mechanical gameplay is more than made up for by really feeling like you are playing a movie. Don't be surprised if you can't put it down and play straight through in a single four hour sitting. I will definitely be checking out Fallen Leaf Studios future projects and Fort Solis has even won me over to the Walking Simulator genre. Don't miss this one.

Fort Solis' incredible story is told through the brilliant performances by its star-studded cast. As is the purpose of walking sims, if you go into Fort Solis not expecting much in terms of gameplay, it makes for a brilliant one-sitting game.

Fort Solis starts strong but quickly struggles to circumvent its shortcomings. Despite the strong visual identity and drive towards absolute immersion, this narrative-adventure ultimately suffers due to its glacial movement and finicky controls. There's promise in the concept, but a lack of refinement is palpable in the execution.

With a slow burn opening that lays the groundwork for a potentially brilliant sci-fi thriller, Fort Solis initially shows plenty of promise - but its story loses momentum in its later chapters, and fails to stick the landing.

It’s short enough to play through in one sitting, but that’s for the best: once you get started with Fort Solis, you’re going to struggle to pull yourself away. It’s a tense, haunting journey that will have you hooked from the word go, keeping you on your toes as you wonder what awaits around every corner. Perhaps its overall story could have packed a bit more punch, but we still lapped up every second of it as we explored the fascinating and eerie titular space station.
