The Coalition has slightly fiddled with the formula, and whilst some adjustments need to be refined for future entries, Gears 5 is ultimately the gorgeous third-person shooter you want it to be.

With new additions, Gears 5 makes its cover-shooter core more adaptive to different playstyles.

Gears 5 is an odd thing; it's neither a grand leap forwards, nor a complete rehash of what came before, and therefore sits somewhere in the middle of the two. On the whole, the improvements do outweigh the negatives (the non-linear approach to campaign levels and the small changes to horde mode being some of the most notable), and while The Coalition still has some work to do to really make the series its own, this is a far bolder and more varied approach the relatively safe Gears 4. If you love shooters and you want a good place to...

Gears 5 feels like a desperate attempt by The Coalition at trying to carve out a new identity for the series, but the execution feels half-hearted. The pseudo open-world skiff exploration is enjoyable early on, but the uninspired objectives end up making it feel dull after a while.

I love when a new Gears of War comes around as the lead up to each release always brings me back to a time when co-op games were more important. Gears of War has always been the game that has brought me, my brother, and even my cousin (who barely plays games) together. Between playing the campaign co-op and teaming up together to dominate the multiplayer, as well as equally complaining about who was host, Gears always brought us together. As an adult and as the series has grown, I’m so happ...

The Coalition has achieved a lot with Gears 5. The writing and action often rivals the best moments in the series, even surpassing its predecessors at times. The overall package is the most robust Gears has ever seen. But, the big structural alteration feels like an unequivocal misstep. Gears 5 is a rousing success, but it could’ve done without the needless change.

Gears 5 is a strong entry into the on-going franchise with a fun campaign, but escape mode fails to impress and Horde still struggles to remain interesting past the first 10 or so waves. Competitive versus modes are as intense and entertaining as they've always been, but are bogged down by grind-heavy progression systems.

Gears 5's campaign is the best the series has seen, and Escape mode is a brilliant new addition. It's fun to play, beautiful to look at, and full of some of the best characters the series has ever seen.

Gears 5 more than lives up to that legacy. With only a couple hiccups, Gears 5 delivers a nearly flawless campaign I cannot endorse more wholeheartedly.

Verdict: Gears 5 hooks you by making you actually care about the characters it shows you. It keeps you by showing you the stuff you loved about your favorite previous Gears of War game. That combo is enough to maybe attain the title of best Xbox One console exclusive title ever. It’s certainly the best one to hit in the last few years. Add in the fact that you can get it for no extra charge through Game Pass and it’s worth both the time and cost.

We like it when creators are able to recognize their mistakes. Gears 5 lets go of the expedition company of rookie boy scouts, and serves a hard-boiled action shooter instead. Just like the old days.

There were moments of quiet and contemplation in Gears 5 that made evaluate how very different this game is to what I expected. Peacefully driving a skiff along an icy plane, surrounded by mountains and glaciers, leaving a thick imprint in the snow behind me. Gears is no longer a hyper-masculine stereotype, rubbing up against hardened concrete and staring at a variety of grey and brown hues while characters scream about how much they love murdering aliens. More than ever before, you're asking questions about the world, your role in it, the COG, and what the correct path forward is....

It's been a few years but we finally have a brand new Gears of War game from The Coalition and it's one heck of a good time.

If you’re looking for large, insane action set-pieces, focused cover-to-cover shooting combat and the satisfying explosion of body parts and flesh, Gears of War has long proven to be one of the top tier experiences in video games. Previously funneling through a relatively linear story, Gears 5 sheds the “of War” and with it sheds those straightforward restraints with a more open world style campaign with a hugely impressive suite of multiplayer options. It is, in my opinion, the most co...

Those who had already made up their mind were never going to be convinced anyway, allowing the latest entry to do everything possible to cater to a loyal fan base without insulting them by just re-releasing Gears 4. With that said, it also opens the door far enough to let fresh light shine in. It’s like welcoming home an old friend only to find they have a new haircut that looks better the more you see of it.

Gears 5 biggest changes don’t reinvent the series, but give the classic shooter more room to breathe. Let Gears be Gears.

Monetization concerns aside, Gears 5 is the perfect Gears of War experience. The Gears 5 campaign delivers everything fans would want from a Gears of War story, with shocking moments, epic set-pieces, and actual character development for a change. Multiplayer and Horde offer compelling experiences that will keep players engaged for the long-term, and the promise of free DLC (like Batista as a playable character, for instance) should ensure that the game has even more legs than past Gears of War titles. After the slightly disappointing Gears of War 4, Gears 5 shows that the series is back with a...

Gears 5 once again feels like a safe bet by The Coalition. You can start to see the developer thinking about new ideas and potential directions that the series can go, but Gears 5 feels largely familiar. The additions of some new features and a new mode added to the fan-favorites that return make for a robust package though.

Gears 5 is one of Microsoft’s best games this console generation. It’s a package that’s brimming with content, and has top-notch stuff on offer for you no matter what you’re looking for. With its campaign, it successfully revitalizes a franchise may had feared was becoming stale, while with its online component, it continues to be on the top of its game, the way the series always been since the day it was born.

Gears 5 is a brilliant experience which can be enjoyed alone or with friends in equal measure. It keeps much of the series' core gameplay and feel, but also takes it in some new directions. It's great to see Gears evolving, opening the door for even more positive changes in the future.

Back at E3 2019, The Coalition’s studio head, Rod Fergusson, told fans that Gears 5 would be “less safe” than Gears 4. It wouldn’t stick faithfully close to the tried and true formula that Epic Games laid down all those years ago, but build and develop on it further. After playing about 20 hours of Gears 5 over the last few days, I can wholly confirm that Fergusson wasn’t lying, and the changes make Gears 5 feel like a true next step for the series.

Gears Of War has always been about making statements. Changing the way movement works in third-person shooters. Changing the human anatomy to make room for extra muscles. Changing the way guns reload.

Gears 5 is an impressive evolution in the Gears of War series with a campaign that feels like a huge leap forward and a dizzying amount of excellent multiplayer modes. The story isn’t without its issues, especially the final act which I’m sure will draw controversy, but that does little to hold back this awesome next chapter in the Gears saga.
