While not quite the best game in the franchise, Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed - Ecto Edition douses its thoroughly serviceable online 4v1 gameplay in positively charged psychomagnotheric nostalgia slime. From small touches in the visuals to snippets of dialogue, the detail and care that has gone into recreating the Ghostbusters’ world here made us forgive the occasional visual glitch and basic, predictable plot. If 'busting makes you feel good, you'll have a great time.

If you’re a big fan of the Ghostbusters IP, then I cannot recommend Ghostbusters Spirits Unleashed enough. Sure, it’s not the greatest game you’ll play, but it’s certainly one you’ll have fun with. Playing with friends of course may be the key to that enjoyment, but the game itself is pretty solid for what it offers. It’ll make you feel like a real Ghostbuster if that’s what you’re seeking, and I adored the attention to detail that Illfonic has once again delivered with yet another big movie IP.

Bustin’ will not make you feel good in this shallow and repetitive asymmetric multiplayer, that is one of the worst of the recent crop of 80s movie homages.

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed has potential, but game balance, a lack of content and some uninspired gameplay makes me want to come back to it after a few updates. Busting ain’t making me so feel good right now.

Upon booting up Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, I was sadly reminded of the “Ghost Corps” logo, a shoddy initiative by Sony Pictures to turn the Ghostbusters franchise into a heavily exploitable multimedia empire. It’s safe to say that, so far, this hasn’t garnered the results that Sony was expecting. Two movies, one of them drowned in unnecessary controversy and the other relying way too much on nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake, and that one terrible Activision game were all that ha...

When supernatural hauntings take place, you call the Ghostbusters. Unfortunately, it’s been a while since the main team took care of crises, and fresh blood is needed. That’s where you come in, as a new trainee looking to be the next generation of Ghostbusters.

Asymmetric games are nearly always a cult favorite amongst a particular audience. The heady, confusing, and completely unbalanced days of Alien vs. Predator 2 and Timesplitters 2 infection mode inspired a generation of players. The modern lockdown beating efforts of Among Us and the countless multiplayer horror games vying for attention have carried the wavering torch into modern times. But none of them are Ghostbusters, are they?

Ghostbusters is a franchise powered by nostalgia. The seminal 1980s comedy film about blue-collar paranormal exterminators still thrives within the collective consciousness. Beyond its sequels, toys, and Saturday morning cartoons, the franchise has been adapted into a handful of video games across numerous platforms. The latest is an asymmetrical multiplayer game by Illfonic, the developers behind Friday the 13th and Predator Hunting Ground.

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed is the closest we’ve yet come to an authentic Ghostbusters experience. Undoubtedly better with friends, it’s still a genuine thrill to play alone - especially if you’re the ghost.

Ghostbusters fans will no doubt appreciate the ability to create their own Ghostbuster, upgrade their kit, and hunt ghosts, but once the nostalgia wears off and the only thing that matters is winning, the game may start to show its flaws. Playing as the ghost, on the other hand, has its own inherent challenges of finding the balance between being outmatched and doing the steamrolling. Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed has all the right pieces when it comes to making a GB game that feels authentic – it's bringing those pieces together in the right way every time that can hurt its...

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed serves up short, sharp shocks of supernatural asymmetrical play. It may prove a bit too simplistic for some, but the game will likely hand out more of a treat and less of a trick for longtime Ghostbusters fans.

And, as I sit here writing this, I can’t wait to zip up my flight suit and step back into my combat boots to bust some more. A lot of love was poured into Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, and it speaks to me. I can only hope that Illfonic is able to support it for months or even years to come because I can definitely see myself returning to it again and again. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got an unlicensed nuclear accelerator to strap to my back.

While Ghostbusters: Spirit Unleashed can be a decent experience with its brand of chaotic asymmetric multiplayer, significant shortcomings in its design and lack of content variety among others stop it from being as great as it could have been.

A noteworthy achievement, this game captures the essence of being a Ghostbuster for any fan. If you’re not too keen on the franchise, you can still enjoy this game a pseudo-horror first-person shooter based around 4v1 team-play.

Ghost players have a much wider range of abilities. They can possess items to move on their own, hide in objects, scare NPCs, and even phase through walls to evade being captured by players. Special techniques can disable the buster's equipment and confuse players long enough to allow a stage's haunted meter to rise to a full one hundred percent, scoring a win for the paranormal, which isn't a perfect ending to a Ghostbusters sequel. While the trainee receives their mentorship from legendary Ghostbusters from the franchise, the ghosts receive guidance from a possessed book called Tobin's Spirit Guide. The...
