If you're in the market for a no-nonsense, balls-to-the-wall, frame-accurate movement shooter, then this neon-soaked game from One More Level will hit the spot. However, it isn't without its flaws.

However, it doesn't take long for the player to encounter Ghostrunner's biggest issue, which is the consistency of its mechanics. Platforming is the worst offender, as Jack will often refuse to wall-run, tether to a point, or grab onto the yellow speed rails. While the combat can also feel unfair at times, it's easy to adjust to as the player tries and tries again; but the platforming issues can easily make someone put the controller down for a bit. Having been reworked to better integrate with the PS5, one would expect these issues to be less present but that is...

Do not go into this game expecting to nail everything on the first try. If you don’t mind dying and trying again, and again, and again… Ghostrunner will be a lot of fun.

So, should you buy Ghostrunner? Maybe. This is a punishingly difficult game by most metrics, but those of you who like a worthy challenge will find plenty to love here. Blink-and-you-miss-it gameplay and some light replayability elements make for a title that at least proves itself to be worth the price of admission. That being said, rough performance and some occasionally unbalanced difficulty can make for an experience that’s often more frustrating than it is fun. If you have another console which can run Ghostrunner, we’d recommend you pick it up there unless you really want to play this one...

Ghostrunner is a breath of fresh air. It takes the best parts of Hotline Miami and Mirror’s Edge, sprinkles in its own style, and hands players a unique experience. Every single minute is a thrill ride that keeps the player packed full of adrenaline, and it doesn’t stop until the end of each level. It’s an immensely enjoyable and satisfying experience that will have you on the edge of your seat trying to master each segment. However, as the price point currently stands you’re getting about 5 hours of content for $30, with the only replayability coming from leaderboard rankings.

Ghostrunner feels like an extended challenge that manages to never get repetitive or frustrating. Whether it's traversing a narrow hallway full of laser traps or slicing through a bipedal robot sentry, this title will have players feeling satisfied as if they had accomplished these feats in real life.

What happens when you take Genji from Overwatch, give him a parkour-esque movement scheme from Mirror’s Edge and put him into 3D, souped up version of the excellent 2D action platformer Katana Zero? You get Ghostrunner. An addictive hardcore action platformer where you die in one hit, but so do your enemies.
Read Full ReviewDespite its flaws, however, Ghostrunner is a fantastic platformer. While we would have loved more lore and a more consistent set of boss experiences, these are small pickings for a game that delivers a Cyberpunk dystopia that we loved tearing down. You can grab Ghostrunner on PC, via Steam, and console.

Platforming is, by design, a rather tricky business. You’re meant to be confounded, to be pushed to your limits at every turn. Every success should come on the heels of agonizing defeat, even if that journey started several games ago. Viewed in this rosy light, Ghostrunner is a landmark victory. Here is a perfect example of repetition and reflexes made musical, a symphony of ability on a throne of relentless exertion. On the other hand, my time with this game was scarred and blistered by frustration.

Unrivalled parkour mechanics and tough-as-nails combat more than make up for a bland cyberpunk setting.

Although Ghostrunner‘s story is straightforward and simplistic, the gameplay is anything but. The parkour aspect of Ghostrunner may feel familiar but the addition of the combat mechanics set this game apart from the rest. Each level brings with it new enemies and a novel configuration of obstacles that will test your skills over and over again.

As I played through the roughly eight-hour campaign this week I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was playing the unholy union of Hotline Miami and Mirror’s Edge that I didn’t know I was missing in my life. Through all of the frustration and cursing at myself for screwing up something that I knew I should have gotten right, I was still having a blast and loving every minute of the game. Though the story is complete for me, I’ll most assuredly be returning to this to see how well I can hone my cyberpunk ninja skills.

You are the Ghostrunner. What does that mean? Doesn’t matter, there isn’t any time to explain just now. You have a voice in your head telling you to come break them out of prison. Why are they in prison? We’re not sure. Should we trust this disembodied voice? It’s not like we know who we are and why we ended up in this predicament in the first place. That’s how Ghostrunner chooses to usher you into its cyberpunk world. Providing questions and little to no answers, all the while this...

But as long as you know what you’re getting yourself into with Ghostrunner, it might just prove to be your favourite game of the year. It’s certainly the most action-packed and exciting. It absorbs you in a world that’s dripping with atmosphere thanks to its stellar visuals, and its pumping soundtrack makes you uncontrollably tap your feet. The gameplay, though, is what will ultimately make you love it. It might take a few attempts, but when you finally clear a room of enemies in one continuous motion as if it was choreographed for a blockbuster movie, you can’t help but...

Few ideas are as ripe for a video game as a cybernetic ninja. Unparalleled agility matched with the boundless power of technology is a blueprint perfectly suited for the interactive medium and the power fantasies it often attracts. Ghostrunner may seem like it was initially birthed out of a pitch meeting filled with similar premises from the “Slam Dunk Game Ideas” list, but it’s more than something a katana-wielding mall ninja would fantasize about. Through its rock-solid controls and well-paced levels, it expertly fulfills the dream of being a cyborg ninja and is one of the best parkour-focused games out...

Ghostrunner will set your adrenaline racing and won’t let up until you’ve mastered its systems. And when you do reach that zen-like moment of precision and elegance, dancing on the edge of a blade between life and death, you’ll ask yourself, “Can I do better?” And that’s when Ghostrunner will have you, truly and deeply.

With its breakneck pace and skill-heavy gameplay, Ghostrunner is a speedrunner’s dream. But even beyond that demographic, this is a great first person action game that feels punishing but fair. You may die hundreds of times, but instantaneous respawns and generous checkpointing ensure that Ghostrunner’s challenging combat and platforming never become a chore. More than all of that though, Ghostrunner is jam packed with a great variety of enemies, mechanics, and special powers that constantly changed up how I approached its many unique encounters. That meant it always felt fresh, and by the end of its six to eight hour...
