I wouldn’t necessarily classify Gothic 1 Remake as “accessible.” It’s still a Eurojank RPG, albeit one that has far fewer bugs and glitches, and is far more playable, than we used to get with the genre. However, while it might still be for a niche audience, this is very much an example of how to do a remake correctly. The developers have addressed the big issues in the original Gothic, while maintaining and building on everything that made it such a cult icon.

Just like the beloved original, Gothic 1 Remake has a brutal learning curve and is rough around the edges, but it’s also an outstanding example of updating an old classic without diluting what made it great.

The Gothic 1 Remake is a beautiful graphical upgrade of one of the most incredible RPGs of all time, and I have no doubt that returning fans will love it. However, the game’s performance issues dampen the mood, and certain new bugs and a lack of quality-of-life improvements make it less than a perfect remake. These issues and the lack of modernizing polish may also make it harder for new players to get into the game, especially when paired with the obviously and purposefully dated, difficult gameplay.

Personally, however, I would recommend Gothic 1 Remake. It is very faithful to the original, for better or worse, and the surface is still rough, prickly and full of Euro-jank.
