Gris plays to your aural and optical senses by delivering something exquisite in that area, but lacks a compelling story to prop itself up alongside equivalents.

Other games may have it beat in terms of pure gameplay, but GRIS is in a league of its own as a gaming experience.

A stunning visual achievement and a mediocre Metroidvania but despite that unevenness this is still an affecting interactive journey with real emotional resonance.

Gris is art in motion and arguably the most gorgeous game I’ve played this year. It dons the cloth of a puzzle platformer, although focusing on just that part means missing the point. That’s because all its pieces, from the absolutely gorgeous visuals and music to the poignant way in which the world gives you the pieces to build the girl’s story, create a delicate whole and an experience that’s well worth jumping into.

In a world of competitive indie gems, Gris is the most recent stunning game bridging the gaps between art and gaming. An emotional water-coloured journey, Gris is the work of creative director Conrad Roset (who had never before worked on a game), along with Adrián Cuevas and Roger Mendoza, two friends who together have spent years inside Ubisoft, going through the Montreal and Barcelona studios.

With GRIS, Nomada has created an abstract adventure, as beguiling as it is haunting. By focusing on its courageous protagonist, and creating a bewitching but frightening world for her to overcome, GRIS succeeds with its short but unforgettable odyssey. Awash with meticulous detail, charming aesthetics, and smart design, GRIS is something special. Take the trip.

Beautiful 2D platformers are practically a meme when it comes to indie game development, but Gris still rises above its contemporaries. Artful in both its watercolor design and broad-strokes storytelling, Gris is a gentle reminder that good puzzle platformers can make you feel smart without smarting, and that being succinct is not a bad thing, especially in the current culture of exhausted replayability.
Read Full ReviewGris is, at times, a meditative, affecting exploration of complex emotions that uses its levels as a canvas for some of the most beautiful visual design in any platformer, backed by a fantastic score. At others, it’s a maddeningly simple and confusing game that lets its artistic ambitions run roughshod over its gameplay.

Perhaps one of the failings of the game is that you gain much of the context and understanding of the story from the game’s Steam and eShop blurb, and while it’s certainly evocative without this, you can just as easily play it without gleaning any real meaning. Going in understanding that it’s a girl dealing with trauma adds greater meaning to the black monster, and the peaks and troughs that she goes through. The music helps add a great deal of the emotion, itself following a similar path to the artwork and growing from a light and sparse to a...

GRIS is without a doubt the most beautiful game I've played in 2018. Forget the jaw-dropping vistas of God of War, the sweeping ruggedness of Red Dead Redemption 2 or the sparkling waters of Sea of Thieves, GRIS has them all beat in my book. Forgoing the ongoing industry trend of creating photorealistic environments, GRIS is a simple, gorgeous and detailed piece of interactive art, that is an absolute wonder to explore.

Gris is an incredible achievement, using its art, music, and gameplay to tell a thematically consistent story about a woman overcoming her grief. Despite the weighty subject matter, the way its protagonist’s triumph over sorrow is reflected in increasingly fluid and diverse platforming makes it a joy to play. While Gris is low on challenge and impossible to fail, it still feels exciting. Even if it doesn’t sound like your kind of game, Gris absolutely deserves a try.

Grief is one of the most powerful emotions a soul can experience and everyone handles it in their own way. Some people use humor as a way to deflect negativity from themselves. Some bury themselves in work or projects so they don’t have to think about it. Then there are those who give in to it and let the pain envelop them. It can become so overwhelming that some are never able to recover. GRIS from Nomada Studios and Devolver Digital, is a game unlike any other, as it takes you through t...

The protagonist of Gris charts her own way out of sadness, and while grief is often navigated alone, that is not necessarily the case here. Her path isn’t straightforward, but the game’s well-designed gameplay and levels don’t make you feel helpless and isolated, instead delivering catharsis.

To call this a simple 2D platforming video game would be to discredit the meticulous work and passion the developers put into this title, not to mention the breathtaking craftsmanship and mental health story you travel on with Gris. The only thing left for me to do now is to play it over again and I can't wait.

I just wish they’d chosen a less obvious story or told it in a less obvious way -- or just made it about a woman running around a pretty place. Make it about a magic watercolour land that needed saving from greyness! That would have been enough! Because it’s hard to overstate how impossibly beautiful this game is! How good the animation! I couldn't look away from it even when it was making me roll my eyes! Like whatever the opposite of a car crash is! Sorry for shouting! I’m sort of cross with it! But also want to play...

GRIS is truly hard to describe. It’s a moving painting, a surreal experience starting in pale colors but eventually highlighted by vibrant colors. Each set piece looks like it belongs in a museum, a beauty truly exhilarating to watch in motion. Couple that with a truly moving story – even if I don’t quite know how to interpret it – and solid platforming and GRIS becomes one of the sleeper hits of the entire year.

In Spanish, “gris” translates to “grey.” That little tidbit should be enough to clue you in to the game’s core and what it’s all about.
Read Full ReviewIn its 3-4 hour playtime, GRIS won’t change the way you think about platformers, but with such a beautiful hand-painted art style and haunting score, it’s an exquisite mini masterpiece that heals the soul.

GRIS features outstanding graphics, beautiful cinematics, and whimsical music. While it lacks in gameplay and replayability, it handily makes up for it in its presentation.
