There’s a hell of a lot to like about Hi-Fi Rush: its sumptuous visuals, its over-the-top characters, its silly humour. When it comes to its gameplay, however, we just wish we liked it more. Between its overly long levels, excessive abundance of rhythm-based events, and bouts of combat that ultimately feel overly chaotic and prescriptive, a lot of potential is squandered. Still, there’s some good fun to be had, even once you’ve completed the game’s campaign. And we’d certainly be up for a sequel with some of the rhythm elements toned down.

Marrying the very best of the action-combat genre with the satisfaction of a rhythm game, Hi-Fi Rush is a titanic achievement that offers plenty of both style and substance. Luscious animations, appealing character designs and a hilarious cast help to elevate this title beyond the level of enjoying for the gameplay alone, I was here for the story too. Learning curves and a few too many dry spells in the main campaign do very little to dampen this rocking good time, a must play for action fans.

For someone who also works in music journalism, my skills are shaky, to say the least. But, having taken the time to improve these skills, I now feel better equipped to appreciate the game for what it is: a fun, quirky, sometimes weird, and often cheesy critique of capitalism. When I was less focused on how perfectly I was playing, I had a much better time headbanging through each stage. Just give me a wider variety of music next time and I’m sold.

Hi-Fi Rush is a light-hearted game about comradery and taking down corpo, mixing fantastic animation, amazing character development, larger than life bosses and more charm than a bassist after getting props for a gig. If Bethesda is doing games like this in 2023, hand me that guitar pick. I'm ready to rock!

By masterfully blending rhythm with action combat, Hi-Fi Rush stands out with something unlike any other. Despite some uninspired exploration, the fun writing and flow-ready combat make this more than a one-hit wonder.

Hi-Fi Rush deserves gold record status. The combat is satisfying to pull off, the narrative keeps you intrigued, and the art style is absolutely gorgeous. While the majority of the game is set in a somewhat sterile factory setting, the amount of flair Hi-Fi Rush oozes more than makes up for it.

Hi-Fi RUSH is a highly enjoyable action-adventure fuses the solid, hack n’ slash combat of Devil May Cry with enthralling rhythm-based mechanics, while also blurring the lines between anime and Saturday Morning Cartoons to deliver a larger-than-life protagonist whose story is just as much fun to watch as he is to play.

There are even a number of additional secrets and game modes that unlock once you reach the game’s conclusion, and it encourages you to jump right back in, which is honestly a hard invite to pass up. I finished Hi-Fi Rush in about 10 hours on the Hard difficulty, as the game suggested that was the “true” experience, and I loved every second of it. If any part of this mash-up threatens to turn you away, I’d highly suggest you give it a shot regardless because it’s for sure much greater than the sum of its parts. The game is...

One of the many ways that games stick out and garner appeal is their style. Sure, we’re at a place where games can be a spectacle in story and budget, bringing cinematic experiences now like no other. Though when a game is able to achieve an otherworldly design and do it while delivering a silky smooth experience, it inspires. Last year, we had that in the cool, edgy card-based shooter meets visual novel Neon White. In 2023, only one month down and we have that in Hi-Fi RUSH, a rhythm-base...

An impressive, beat-based action game that loses most of its impact by the end.

I simply can’t imagine not seeing Chai and 808 again, whether it’s in another game or some kind of animated spinoff. As triple-A gaming starts to feel more homogenized each year, Hi-Fi Rush is a stark reminder of how this industry was built on taking chances and experimenting. It’s a gutsy move from a developer known for only making “spooky” games, but it’s a gamble that’s clearly paid off.

A brilliant combination of rhythmic motions and a deep action-packed battle system make for a compelling adventure. Hi-Fi Rush is only let down by its writing and character development, or lack thereof.

Hi-Fi Rush occupies an increasingly rare space in the big-budget video game industry: that of colorful, goofy, and light-hearted titles. For its 10 or 11-hour runtime, it has more in common with a Saturday morning cartoon than a thin attempt at gritty, prestige television, like most triple-A games these days, and that's easily its biggest strength. That its gameplay and combat are a unique melding of rhythm and stylish action games is merely the cherry on top.

A very welcome surprise, that is one of the most enjoyably unique games on Xbox and one of the best rhythm action games in a very long time 0 as well as having arguably the best cel-shaded graphics ever seen.
Read Full ReviewEver been to a gig where the support act blew you away more than the band you paid to see? You get the same feeling playing Hi-Fi Rush. Dropping from out of nowhere, this colourful and cartoony rhythm actioner couldn’t be more different from developer Tango Gameworks’ previous games. It swaps the nightmarish survival horror of The Evil Within and spooky open world of Ghostwire: Tokyo for the unabashed creativity of a Dreamcast or PS2-era title, with a rocking licensed soundtrack to match.

I had zero crashes or bugs of any type while playing. It might be the first time in years that I can say that. Not one freeze, not even a hitch. No crashing or odd enemy behavior. I never clipped through a wall or had the sound cut out. It was as bug-free an eleven hours of gaming as I can remember.
