Initial impressions of Jump Force back at E3 2018 weren’t the most positive. The demo suffered from confusing visuals and framerate dips, but had enough charm to convince me to give it a go eventually. Being a successor to J-Stars Victory Vs., a title often ignored by most people, but a personal favorite of mine back in the early days of the PS4, I really wanted to like Jump Force. I certainly wasn’t expecting to dislike it as much as I did.

Jump Force brings together some of Mangas biggest and best characters and instead of making you feel powerful leaves you fighting bad gameplay, an aggravating plot, and your own patience. Even big Shonen Jump fans may want to avoid this one...

Jump Force delivers a decent brawling experience that is hampered by so many issues that drag the game’s pace to a crawl and even fans will find it hard to overlook the design choices and countless visual glitches that lead to a game that may be rather fun at its core but little more than that.

While it can be enjoyable, Jump Force's power level is nowhere near 9000. This is unfortunate, as the concept for Jump Force is a good idea at its basic level and it's clear the developers are passionate about the source material but the title ultimately does not live up to the idea's potential. The story fails to really explain what's going on and who all these characters are, but also is able to do so in a way where you don't really care that you're missing out on what should be pertinent information. The gameplay itself is enjoyable though not...

Overall Jump Force does several things well, but where it falls short it is noticeable. If you’re a big fan of the various Jump Shonen franchises than this is a fun ride for you, if you’re looking for an online fighting game, look elsewhere. Having your custom character fight side on the same team as Luffy from One Piece or Midoriya from My Hero Academy is great. The characters from their shows are done very well and look great. Customizing of your character is well done and gives you som...

Despite having 50 years of legacy to work from, this manga mash-up feels like a rush job. The combat offers basic fun, but as a complete package Jump Force proves to be a flop.

Story and character are what makes Shonen Jump special, but with a few too many missteps this ambitious crossover won’t have you jumping for joy.

Whether it’s the power of friendship, guts, or determination, Shōnen Jump, for the last 50 years, has provided its fans with endless hours of entertainment. The spectacular stories that have come out of this weekly manga serialisation are legendary. Several iconic popular culture personalities, like martial artist Goku, pirate captain Luffy, and leaf village ninja Naruto all owe their humble beginnings to this one amazing serialisation. Having recently reached its 50th year anniversary (20...

The characters of Shonen Jump clash in this dull fighting game.

Boasting a roster of great Shonen Jump characters and a decent fighting game at its core, Jump Force forgets all of the other elements that you'd ordinarily take for granted. Fans might find something here to enjoy, but anyone who doesn't know their Frieza from their Vegeta might do well to steer clear.

Jump Force is a very flawed game that fails at some of the most basic fundamentals, but nonetheless manages to be great fun, and provide enough value and fanservice that fans of the various properties from Shonen Jump represented within it will find enough reason to get it.

Anime sure has come a long way over the last few decades, something that Jump Force shows by bringing together heroes and villains from across Shonen Jump’s long history. Unfortunately, Jump Force also shows that anime games haven’t come nearly as far. Despite a strong combat system, most of Jump Force falls short of reaching the ideal its announcement had set.

An ambitious brawler that suffers from something of an identity crisis, Jump Force will nevertheless delight anime fans – especially those of a vintage who knows the more obscure characters included here.

We've played some ugly anime games in our time, but there's a special place in art style hell for Jump Force. What should be a grand celebration of all things Jump, this crossover fighter is loathsome in its portrayal of the awesome manga and anime heroes that make up its character roster.

Shonen Jump has been delivering iconic characters and stories that have shaped the landscape of manga, anime, and Japanese culture in general for the past 50 years, and Jump Force intends to celebrate that legacy by bringing a ton of classic characters together to duke it out for the fate of their own worlds, as well as ours. It features brand new original characters by Dragonball Z creator Akira Toriyama, and allows players to create their own fighters to defend Earth and the Jump Worlds alongside their favorite Shonen heroes. It’s a pretty exciting prospect for manga and anime fans...

Jump Force is not the first time characters from disparate Shonen Jump manga and anime franchises have faced off against one another in a fighting game, but this release represents the biggest and flashiest mashup brawl they have ever engaged in. The 40 characters have multiple bombastic animations for their noteworthy attacks, and it’s all wrapped up in a goofy story where universes collide. Unfortunately, the combat never becomes totally engaging, and the sloppy presentation drags down the other elements that had potential.

Crossover fighting games are a time-honored tradition, especially when it comes to various series out of Japan. Bandai Namco Entertainment has a long history pitting the various heroes and villains of the Shonen Jump manga level against each other, and there’s a stable of developers it often rotates through. Jump Force is the latest effort in that line, this time from Spike Chunsoft. While that studio is more closely associated with RPGs and visual novels, there is precedent here, with the likes of J-Stars and One Piece: Burning Blood both being fighting titles from the developer. While those games were...

If you’ve got like-minded anime fans who are down to smash some buttons and watch the sparks fly, Jump Force’s fighting system allows for at least a few hours of shallow fun before it gets stale and repetitive. The bland story feels half-baked and never does anything interesting with its impressive roster of beloved characters who’ve rarely or never had the chance to meet before, making this celebration of 50 years of Weekly Shonen Jump a disappointment overall.

If it wasn’t for Jump Force‘s highly entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable combat, the game would be a disaster. But Jump Force is a fighting game, and so everything about it that’s turgid and unnecessary can largely be avoided or overlooked. It’s got a large roster of fighters, plenty of content, and looks great in action. Those are the things to focus on. Could it have been a hell of a lot better? Of course. But that doesn’t mean you should write off Jump Force. Neither should you write it off for its unusual art style. Just engage in its unique...

I will never learn. I've played dozens of licensed anime games, and I've been disappointed almost as many times. Despite that, the love for my anime favorites persists, and each time a game is announced, I want to play it. Of course, Dragon Ball FighterZ proved that licensed anime games can actually be fantastic, with the right vision. Unfortunately, since its announcement, Jump Force hasn't looked like the anime crossover extravaganza that we've wanted.

Crossover games are nothing new to Bandai Namco or Shonen Jump, so it surprises and disappoints me to see that none of the good aspects or successful mechanics of these previous games made their way into Jump Force at all. Jump Force is a visual mess, It lacks the fun and charm that a wild crossover like this should embrace, and It's just a technical mess from top to bottom. Jump Force is a huge celebration of some of the most iconic manga in history, but it fails to do any of them justice.

Jump Force! Shouted with enough conviction, it sounds like a particularly punishing exercise plan, or a Saturday morning kids show from the early 90s.

Crossover fighting games are a great way to duke it out as all your favourite characters. However, does Bandai Namco's latest fighter with characters from across the Shonen Jump universe offer enjoyable gameplay?

What this game is really about is fan service and I must admit that it succeeds in offering folks up a hefty chunk in that department. Jump Force knows that it’s really for the Shonen Jump fans and if you are a fan there’s plenty to like here. One would probably be better off focusing on the core fighting game aspects though.
