Marvel Midnight Suns is, by and large, an unfulfilling superhero title that is only as endurable as it is courtesy of how great Firaxis are at what they do. There’s a lot of heroes and just as many hollow hellos between them that makes me wish all of the story’s character drama was checked at the door for more of what Midnight Suns does well.

Marvel's most recent delve into the world of RPGs comes from the tactical experts at Firaxis Games. Rather than just make a rebranded XCOM clone, the team has made a distinct and worthwhile experience.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns is a massive game that contains plenty of goodies for any Marvel enthusiast to go bananas over. The story is presented very well, with memorable character performances. The combat system can seem a bit tedious, and missions might take a bit of time, but it’s well executed once you get the hang of it. There’s plenty of customization in the game, from character costumes to what cards you use in missions. Even if you’re not a fan of tactical strategy games, we recommend checking out Marvel’s Midnight Suns if you’re a fan of the superhero genre.

Superhero mania has taken the world by storm over for more than a decade, and it seems as though there are no signs of that slowing, as we’ve seen a plethora of popular Marvel titles hit the scene, with plenty more on the way. Marvel’s Midnight Suns stands apart from the Marvel’s Avengers and Marvel’s Future Revolution as a game that provides robust strategy, a nuanced story, and one thing that few Marvel games, if any, have – character creation. Despite the stark departure from the...

While playing Marvel’s Midnight Suns, what it reminded me most of was Sonic Frontiers. Not because of the gameplay obviously, as it’s clearly extremely different. But in other more fundamental ways, they were sadly similar. Both games were announced to a lukewarm to negative response from their target audiences. Both of them spent their marketing run desperately trying to explain what they were and how they worked. Neither one really pulled it off either, and both launched to indifference...

Marvel's Midnight Suns’ story may be a bit on the safe side but character interactions, tons of side content, and an exceptionally enjoyable combat system make this a must play tactical RPG.

When rumors first started floating around that a Marvel X-COM was in the works, I was ecstatic. When it was revealed that Midnight Suns wouldn’t share anything in common with X-COM. I deflated. That bias stuck with me for so long that I even threw a tiny bit of shade at the game in my Phoenix Point review.

Marvel's Midnight Suns has an ace up its sleeve.

True, Marvel’s Avengers was a disappointing blockbuster (the game, not the billion-earning movie) but brawling with your favourite superheroes is an easier sell than placing them in some grid-based tactics game that asks you to flex your grey matter. And despite the recent success of deckbuilder Marvel Snap, having your heroes act based on cards will be a turn-off for some. Then there’s the fact it isn’t based on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but a more obscure 90s comic book run focused on Marvel’s darker, supernatural side.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns is a really cool take on a classic story from the darker side of the Marvel comics universe. Gameplay is a pretty simple mashup between strategy card games and XCOM’s turn-based combat system, making for a refreshing way to experience being a superhero. However the game does have some performance issues, particularly loading times, and some of the side content lacks meaningful contributions to the mission.

In an era of samey mainstream games, Marvel’s Midnight Suns sticks out like a Spider-Man cosplay in a white collar working place. While this heroic effort from iconic XCOM developer Firaxis pulls liberally from a spectrum of different sources – the likes of Slay the Spire, Metal Gear Acid, and even Fire Emblem: Three Houses all immediately swallow-dive to mind – this is a truly unorthodox adventure that’s unlike any superhero title you’re likely to have played. And while the strategy title doesn’t always stick the landing, it deserves your attention all the same.

The weirdest Marvel game is also one of the best. With an enormous number of complementary systems, a simple but deep combat system, and a mountain of delightful character moments to explore, Midnight Suns shines a brilliant light into one of Marvel's lesser-known corners. This is a huge game, but also a comfortable and warm game for strategy and Marvel fans alike. Possibly the best release of the holiday season, and one of the strongest games of the year.

Marvel's Midnight Suns offers a surprisingly complete experience, going above and beyond what you're used to in XCOM-esque tactics games. From the dynamic card combat system, robust customization options, and hilarious banter with teammates to the fact that you've got a fully explorable hub with secrets, it's got everything you could ever want and then some.

Marvel's Midnight Suns is a strangely complex game to explain. It’s equal parts isometric turn-based RPG, social simulator, and deck-building card game. But you know what? It actually works! Sure, it’s not as tense and as gripping as Firaxis’ XCOM series, but this is a nice action-oriented offshoot.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns delivers satisfying strategic battles, as well as a full-fledged superhero social sim. The deckbuilding elements give players plenty of room to find their own strategies. The game has some graphical and technical shortcomings, but a strong story and cast should keep superhero fans hooked for dozens of hours.

Marvel's Midnight Suns is a fun strategy game using a unique card-based system, and while it does have some minor issues, it overall runs well on the Steam Deck.

December 6, 2022 Read Review

Marvel's Midnight Suns takes the delightfully deep turn-based tactics of Firaxis' sublime XCOM franchise and adds a slick card battling system to fantastic effect. This is a highly satisfying slice of strategy action, a love letter to all things Marvel that's absolutely dripping in personality, and an adventure that we can see ourselves blasting through multiple times in the months ahead. With a generous main campaign, unlockable NG+ mode and tons of collectibles and customisation to boot, this one's arrived right at the tail end of 2022 and jumped straight to the upper echelons of our list of the very best games of the year.

Marvel's Midnight Suns pulls all its different elements together to create a memorable tactical RPG. The combat is the main event and its execution resulted in every battle being an enjoyable event, whether it was taking on a nefarious supervillain or relieving Hydra of the ownership of a valuable artifact. Outside of battle, life in the Abbey is full of activities and social interaction with other super heroes that greatly flesh out its RPG elements. The dialogue trees aren't the most in depth ever created, but they're fleshed out enough where they help the world feel alive and worth saving from Lilith. The end result is a game that isn't just a must play for superhero fans, but one that should be experienced by RPG fans in general.

If you are looking for deep, turn-based combat, blended with a healthy dose of superhero angst, Marvel’s Midnight Suns will serve up something special and well worth making time for this holiday season.

Marvel's Midnight Suns is a blast to play, as you get to really experience what it is like to be a powerful superhero, thanks to excellent gameplay mechanics. It's just a shame that they didn't flesh things out a little bit more when it comes to the world and how it wants to tell its stories, as that would have made it a truly elite game in the genre.

Midnight Suns will go down as one of the surprising game releases of this year and an impressive outing for Firaxis once again; I'll be taking Captain Marvel's advice and reinstalling XCOM on my PC because I don't have a C.E.N.T.R.A.L. as they do.

Play enough games, and you start to develop an eye for the ones that are going to demand a lot of your time and focus. Within minutes, I knew Firaxis’ comic book-powered adventure with the Marvel superheroes would be one of those games, filled as it is with numerous currencies, cosmetics, and gameplay systems. Midnight Suns is a strategy/RPG of tremendous depth, character development in both storytelling and upgrades, and many dozens of hours of gameplay to uncover. While the repetitive nature of the storytelling structure is sometimes a chore, the combat is top-notch. It injects the slow-paced XCOM tactical experience Firaxis is known for with a gamma-powered boost, leading to rewarding battles that stay fresh even after you’ve sunk countless hours into the experience.

You load onto the battlefield. Before long, your team is in harmony. The Hunter is whipping hydra forces around the map to an almost pinballing effect, wiping the floor clean. Ghost Rider mows down another group with their 1969 Dodge Charger (otherwise known as The Hell Charger). You win. Then you’re at home. You’re playing video games with Tony Stark and painting with Wolverine. This is the weird world the new tactical adventure Marvel’s Midnight Suns depicts. Thankfully, it’s a grea...

Whether you’re a fan of strategy games or the Marvel universe, Marvel’s Midnight Suns should be considered a must-have. Even more so if you’re a fan of both. Over the past 15 years, comic book fans have been lucky enough to see their favorite superheroes turn into household names thanks in no small part to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and a selection of DC comics adaptations. Though when it comes to video games, only the biggest heroes like Spider-Man and Batman have gotten that same spotlight. That’s changing with Marvel’s Midnight Suns. It’s a strategy RPG that follows both iconic Avengers characters and more obscure supernatural ones as they take on Lilith, Mother of Demons. Players can walk around and mingle with the other heroes between missions, while its turn-based strategy gameplay stands out from Firaxis’ previous titles by putting the focus on card-based abilities.

Marvel's Midnight Suns works wonders to freshen up familiar Marvel characters, producing lively battles from focused turn-based systems, then diving into their personalities and histories to reveal their intimate concerns. The combat missions can feel a little side-lined by the sheer wealth of resource management tasks and relationship building, but all the pieces serve a purpose within the richly detailed whole. Marvellous? Pretty much.
