“Dark Souls with guns”. This is how most people I know have initially described Remnant: From the Ashes, originally released in 2019 to some surprisingly positive reception. It wasn’t exactly the kind of game that would end up winning awards, but everyone I know who has played it really enjoyed it. It was the perfect example of a AA game filling a specific niche with honors. One thing everyone praised about it, besides the fact it was a soulslike with an emphasis on guns, was its fun on...

If you have the patience for it this can be a solid solo experience. It will test you though as many areas can take 20 or 30 minutes to clear on the higher difficulties where you can die in a second or two of attacks if you get caught off-guard. Thankfully, boss encounters give you a checkpoint before the blatantly ripped off Souls fog wall to enter the arena, which greatly reduces the frustration.

By taking the best bits of a few different genres, Gunfire Games has come up with an exceptional formula here, and brought us the surprise hit of the year. Sure, it’ll take you a while to “git gud”, but it actually feels like it’s worth the practice.

One of the reasons I joined Checkpoint is my pure love of games. I’ve played through hundreds of games over the years. Naturally this allowed for me to learn what does and doesn’t work for me in titles. Take a bit from this game and a little from that, oh and maybe a bit of that one. Rarely have I found a game that’s amalgamated everything I love from games in one single package. Remnant: From The Ashes, from Darksiders II developer Gunfire Games, is one of those games.

Before I started Remnant, I was worried that its ranged combat wouldn’t provide the same kind of challenge or depth as other, more melee-focused, action games. But Remnant is still finding ways to surprise and challenge me, after I’ve put nearly 10 hours into the game, and each boss teaches me something new about the game and how to play it. I can’t wait to see what I’ll learn next, and what I’ll see — and kill — on the way.

Remnant is on my list of biggest surprises of 2019. I was apprehensive since I'm not a fan of Souls-like games, but this one is right up my alley. The combat is fantastic and it's even better when you are playing with others online.

Shredding through packs of monsters and elite enemies through swamps, deserts, and technologically advanced hallways is what drives Remnant: From The Ashes, and the progression loop is alluring. Whether you enjoy the satisfying burst-pop from a single-shot pistol or the steady damage from a beam rifle, Remnant gives you myriad options. Since each iteration of the world is generated from a different seed, procedural pieces snap together to create encounters and unlocks your friends may not see, making your first run fresh, mysterious, and inviting.

Its characters, interesting world, and incredible boss fights make Remnant: From the Ashes hard to put down. While it clearly takes inspiration from Dark Souls, Remnant is much more than the Darks Souls with guns label its been given, and comes into its own as a completely unique experience. There are some minor quality-of-life changes that could be made to make the game even better, but it's still one of the best games of the year regardless, especially when played in co-op.

Gunfire Games makes no effort to hide all of the influences in Remnant: From the Ashes. In fact, It’s a game that rests on the idea that you’ve played several of those games before. There’s a familiarity in some of its tropes that extend just close enough to “repetitive” to keep you engaged. Then, in almost every way it can, Remnant subverts your expectations.

Remnant: From the Ashes takes too long to get going, but when it does, it lets it rip. The randomization element is too half-baked to really propel this project above the rest of its ilk, but Gunfire Games has some really good ideas that I hope to see employed more often in the future.

Interesting genre mashups like this don't come along often, probably because they aren't always for everyone, but the only way the industry will find cool new genre mixes or avenues to explore is with unique titles like this. If this particular quirky mix of a cooperative shooter and Soulslike set in a post-apocalyptic world piques your interest, Remnant: From the Ashes may be worth checking out.

Remnant: From the Ashes offers the kind of experience I never knew I wanted: a brutally hard cooperative shooter with rogue-like tendencies. It features some snappy gunplay and thrilling boss encounters, and a crazy amount of replayability.

Remnant: From the Ashes is a tough, co-op centric third-person shooter hiding a surprising amount of depth in both its combat and narrative. Its weapons and abilities are diverse and fun to use, allowing for a variety of unique builds. While its difficulty can feel uneven, victory over a tough boss is always satisfying. Fiercely challenging even in a group, Remnant’s clever use of procedural generation makes subsequent playthroughs as satisfying as the first one.

Remnant: From the Ashes perfectly captures the Soulsborne feeling it was aiming for with some neat tricks of its own. The way the world is created through random encounters and design means that there will always be something new to discover. The technical side is a bit hit or miss but underneath a few questionable design choices, there’s a fantastic game waiting to burst out.

Remnant: From The Ashes is a game with extremely derivative design, but good gunplay, solid co-op play, and smart randomization means it's still fun, if not original, solo or with friends.

There’s a lot to like about Remnant: From the Ashes. Its character and world design is mostly excellent, and it’s really atmospheric when played alone. Its core mechanics work well, too. But additional polish and tweaks are needed to really make it great. And maybe more items. As a base to be built on, Remnant: From the Ashes has a lot of promise. In a year from now, I can imagine it being truly excellent. Hopefully Gunfire Games can make that happen.

In one sense, Gunfire Games have seemingly achieved the impossible in providing us with a shooter-focused RPG whose gameplay loop is validated by its plentiful, challenging encounters. Divisive its procedural approach to a campaign (roughly 15 - 20 hours in length) it may be, Remnant: From the Ashes manages to ride out enough of its issues to remain intently focal on its gameplay -- unfortunate it may be that many of its other elements come off sprinkled about, lesser in impact. Given its sparse, loosely-connected, barely-investable level design and satisfactory-if-not-exemplary variety of enemies, while there's a rich palette with which...

Remnant: From the Ashes is a co-op action-RPG that's punishing and grotesque, but exciting and beautiful all at the same time. Despite the occasional difficulty spikes and slightly disappointing gear system, the thrill of finally beating a boss that’s had your number for hours is unmatched.

I had such a fun time with it that I am hoping that this is the start of a series, and success will bring the budget that will allow a talented group of developers to truly shine, with no compromises made when it comes to executing their vision. If you have been interested in Remnant, but loath to jump in, I say go for it. Round up some friends and venture out into the world and see what you find, you will be surprised by how fun it all feels.

Remnant: From the Ashes boasts a beautifully realized world with awesome enemy design and top-notch gunplay. There's plenty of customization and incentive to go back for more. Unfortunately, the experience is ruined a bit by repetitive boss battles and lacking social features.

Remnant: From the Ashes is immediately familiar and infinitely enjoyable. Gunfire Games has created something really special. The randomized experience means that subsequent playthroughs feel fresh while offering continued purpose through leveling, alternate boss kills, and weapon acquisition. Though it does have a few rough edges with pacing and story, Remnant: From the Ashes takes its rightful place at the Soulsborne table.
