Resident Evil 4 translates a game already revered into an absolute masterpiece. The tension is heightened and the combat is stronger than ever, all while still maintaining the corny dialogue and humour that the original game was known for. While there are a few minor aspects missing, Resident Evil 4 is a strong example of what any remake should be and is well worth your time.
Resident Evil 4 reimagines and reanimates the 2005 classic with exceptional gameplay updates and lifelike visuals. The thrilling narrative and meticulously crafted environment have made RE4 a game I just can’t stop playing. With such high attention to detail, Capcom has crafted a prodigious experience so immersive that it stands gallantly as one of the greatest video game experiences offered in the industry today.
While the removal of one boss in particular and an only okay performance of one character are notable missteps for a remake, the game otherwise feels like a solid iteration of the original. For RE4 newcomers, it’s a fun game that turns up the action of the Resident Evil 2 remake and has a similar inventory to Resident Evil Village. To those that played the original in 2005 however, it’s a nostalgic love letter that you can tell was made with care, and respect to the original.

No new console generation feels quite right until a re-release of Resident Evil 4 rolls around. Following a PS2 version in 2005, the Capcom classic has been ported to every home system from Sony since; you can't have one without the other at this point. However, following the developer's recent remaking efforts with Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, expectations are now quite a bit different compared to past editions. Retaining so much of what made the survival horror sensation a masterpiece all those years ago, Capcom has remade Resident Evil 4 into one of the greatest games ever all over again. With new content, features, and areas, it's a truly outstanding, special experience worth savouring.
Resident Evil 4 Remake is a more mature and darker take on Leon’s Euro Trip that constantly plays with your expectations and prior knowledge. The core narrative stays true to the original, but it's not afraid to make some significant changes, while the new gameplay flow lends itself brilliantly for repeated runs for specific challenges that I'm already planning. I'm eagerly awaiting the Mercenaries mode as the hard hitting combat should be perfect for high score chasing, but in the meantime Leon is about to have a bad day all over again.
Serving as both a clever and adoring return to a classic, and an imaginative, mechanically-perfected look to the future, Resident Evil 4 is Capcom’s best work and a new crown jewel for the long-running franchise.

As someone who very much prefers the more horror-focused entries in the Resident Evil franchise, this remake does a lot to address the problems I had with the original game. The well-crafted campaign, awesome additions, and unmistakable love for the original release all result in one of the best remakes in recent memory. After I completed the game, I couldn’t wait to start it over again, and I never thought that with any of the previous action-oriented RE titles. Whether you’re a fan of the original or tend to gravitate towards the non-action-oriented games in the series, I think Resident Evil 4 Remake is well worth your time.
A remake full of changes and adjustments that stays true to the spirit of the original, Resident Evil 4 can't be seen as anything but a complete success. Some may malign what's missing, but the areas that have been added or expanded more than make up for what's been taken out. This is brilliant stuff.

More than eleven years have passed since Resident Evil 4 first hit Nintendo’s GameCube, and since then many competitors have attempted to topple its status as the king of survival horror. As of yet, though, none have succeeded, and for good reason. It also comes as no surprise that Capcom’s seminal effort has become one of the most re-released experiences in our industry.
If that seems like a minor thing to make my biggest complaint, you’d be right; the faults in Resident Evil 4 don’t add up to very much. It’s astonishing just how well RE4 has held up after nearly fifteen years, but it still managed to draw me in and keep me playing no matter what intermittent problems I ran into. There’s a reason this game has been so celebrated over the years, and if you’re like me and have been ignoring it for over a decade, then there’s no better time to see what the big deal is than right now.
The original Resident Evil 4 didn’t just completely subvert the series’ survival horror roots; it laid the foundations for all over-the-shoulder third person action games that followed. Resident Evil 4 is a fantastic game no matter what you play it on, but the jump to VR has a few issues. The controls feel good in a vacuum, but certain options will make the game exponentially harder. If you’re someone who doesn’t get sick in VR, this is one of the best titles on the platform. If you do get sick, however, stick with the 2D versions.
Resident Evil 4 is one of the best video games of all time, and if you’ve somehow managed to avoid it all these years, the Switch edition is a decent, convenient way to catch up – but the fact that the Wii Edition still has a legitimate claim as the 'definitive' version proves irksome. Handheld mode is the biggest draw here and that’s not only where the game’s ageing visuals work best, but also where its control scheme makes the most sense. The lack of optional gyro aiming is disappointing and high definition arguably works against it in many ways, highlighting cracks which simply didn’t show up fourteen years ago, but the genius of the underlying game still shines through and anybody who’s still got it sitting on their bucket list is in for a treat. It will likely take a Resident Evil 2-style remake in a few years if it's ever going to truly sing on HD hardware – and goodness knows the game deserves it – but if you haven’t played it in the last decade, the Switch version is a very solid one, even if it doesn’t feel as special as it once did. So, what’ll it be, stranger?
So, to summarise Resident Evil 4 on the Xbox One: the controls are as awkward as ever, the camera is still pretty dire, and the graphics are a marginal improvement over the previous generations’ port job. But, it doesn’t matter. This is Resident Evil 4 on yet another format which means those who love it can love it once again and those who have never sampled it before can now do so on their fancy new console. Yeah, it’s disappointing that it hasn’t been given any special love or bells and whistles to make this re-release more of an interesting proposition to series fans, but at least the gameplay still shines and it runs without any performance issues. They’re the most important things, right?

While there are a substantial amount of complaints in this review about graphics, the game still plays very well. The puzzle mechanics work smoothly, environments are introduced in skillful fashion, and the fighting is always interesting and low on frustration factor, aside from the aim-to-shoot mechanic in close quarters combat. If you don't have a PS2 or GameCube lying around, you really should play this game, and to do so you really need a gamepad. The game's got five extra missions where you play as Ada Wong, some new weapons and costumes, and a 20 dollar price tag. If you can get past the graphics and input calamities, it's not hard to enjoy.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is the first third party title to be a part of Xbox’s Play Anywhere program, allowing the game and saves to be playable on both PC and Xbox interchangeably. Previously there have been more than a few hiccups with this program, but Resident Evil 7 runs mostly without any hitches. I played at much higher frame rate and graphical fidelity with a high level of stability with ease. My saves transferred over mostly seamlessly, I think I had to retry my cloud synchronization once but otherwise my experience was good. There is a current issue with DRM for some, where the game itself won’t actually launch on the purchased PC, which has been identified and is being worked on.
Experiencing Resident 4 HD, everything is as it ever was. The visual upgrade is well received, and the game’s narrative is as terrifying and enticing as ever. Capcom have played this one safe, as it would have been nice to see them try and mix things up with a new inventory system. Still, I absolutely adore this game. Almost everything new felt fresh and good without straying too far from familiarity. Both games have unique identities and almost need to be treated as such. The remake doesn’t try to replace the original and its perfected level design, but instead, it offers players more freedom and spectacle. I would say almost any other game this good would surpass the original but Resident Evil 4 isn’t just any game. But in overall quality, Resident Evil 4 Remake could still be considered the best remake of all time and it certainly makes as a strong contender for game of the year already.
