Shadow Warrior 2 surprised me. It takes a chance by adopting a more open-ended structure, but it pays off. All the humour of the original game remains intact, and there’s more emphasis on you simply having fun, whether that’s by yourself or with others. And what fun it is. The enhanced movement options and visceral action means it’s a joy to play, and the loot system just sucks you in as you seek out the best weapons and customisation items to make your Wang the best there is. Shadow Warrior 2 is more than I expected in a sequel, and...

Flying Wild Hog has gone well beyond churning out a simple sequel to its rebooted series. Shadow Warrior 2 stands on its own as a frenzied yet fresh blending of genres that can easily enthral groups of players for hours at a time. For lone wolves, the looting and shooting will be slightly less appealing. This, and a few smaller hitches, hold the game back from greatness, though die-hard fans of the genre will certainly get their fill.

Released back in 1997, Shadow Warrior was an incredible example of the FPS genre. The game featured both melee and ranged combat, amazingly tight and responsive controls, and a wise-cracking, non-conventional protagonist by the name of Lo Wang. After a re-boot in 2013, the Shadow Warrior franchise has finally received its sequel and it’s just as chaotic, tightly-controlled and as non-conventional as the previous iterations.

Shadow Warrior 2 is a fast, gorgeous shooter with smart loot components, trapped inside a world and age that lost its luster ages ago. Where the core gameplay still feels fantastic, the story, world and mission structure gradually drag it down short of being a successor to the grandeur of its predecessor. An excellent shooter that could have used 99 percent less Wang.

Are you fond of jokes about male genitalia? Do you think the name “Wang” opens up a myriad of potential gags? If you are like me and think the odd dangly bit between men’s legs is somehow hilarious, then the dialogue in Shadow Warrior 2 will please you. If not, then the good news is that cutscenes can be skipped, and the gameplay is balls-to-the-wall, all out action. And it’s glorious.

It says a lot when Shadow Warrior 2 is only the second best 3D Realms game out this week, and the other is yet another remaster of Duke Nukem 3D. Despite loving the first game I could not get along with this sequel, with both single-player and co-op feeling lacking in different ways. The uneven randomized levels and dull fetch quest missions make the single-player boring, the absence of any communication options, the lack of difficulty scaling and the between-mission downtime make co-op less ...

Be full-warned, if like me you missed out on Wild Hog’s Reboot, the storyline will make you feel as if you’ve woken up from a drunken stupor. Not that I mean to give the impression that presentation is one of this game’s let downs. Cut-scenes are paced like Blur’s Song 2, and they feature more abrupt cuts than a shredded film reel, but dialogue and characterization are surprisingly strong. It’s only when the game’s lore and background is being discussed that I begin to feel lost.

Shadow Warrior 2 is in no way a bad game, and I found myself grinning through a lot of it. I’d groan at Wang begging to cut off a penis immediately afterwards, but some people will probably get a laugh out of that. Definite flaws and a laser focus on making the game a more universally sellable experience hurt it, but if you want to shoot shit while shooting the shit with some buddies, you could do a lot worse.

A thrilling looter shooter that nearly makes up for its bad jokes with a comically advanced gore system.

Shadow Warrior 2 is a smart evolution of the solid framework established in the first game. Bigger guns, nastier enemies, grander levels and more friends means more Wang for everybody.

Wang's stupid wisecracks kept me smiling from start to finish, and the variety of melee and ranged combat and the loot that dropped from it was satisfying enough that I came back with friends for more. It's great fun in solo or in co-op, and its small degree of randomization is enough to keep the action fresh for at least a few runs.

Shadow Warrior 2 is a worthy successor to the 2013 reboot. Flying Wild Hog obviously put more work into some of the gameplay systems for the game, while keeping the original's great combat system and charm. If you're up for some bloody fast-paced first person combat, this ultimate power trip won't disappoint.

Decidedly old-school but feeling a bit uninspired, Shadow Warrior 2 is fun for some straightforward co-op action. It could have been more but what's there is good enough.

Shadow Warrior 2 is a delightfully bloody romp that pleases shooter fans of any age. Despite a short length and some technical hiccups, nothing can stop this game's crazy momentum.
