The 2011 release of Sonic Generations was one of the best games the series had received in years and served as an effective celebration of the Blue Blur’s 20th anniversary. Though the 33rd anniversary is much less of a milestone birthday, Sonic Team carried forward that legacy with a solid remaster of Sonic Generations. However, rather than simply polishing old decorations, Sonic Team gave fans new ways to celebrate with a superb second campaign starring Sonic’s most popular rival, Shadow...

Sonic X Shadow Generations is twice as nice, featuring the same stellar campaign from the original release along with a solid side-story featuring the Ultimate Life Form Shadow the Hedgehog. While this new content doesn’t quite hit the same highs with a number of hands-off sequences, it’s still worth a go for those who just can’t get enough of this malcontent.

SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS is a good collection of two fun games. Sonic Generations is still a solid romp even if this port adds more issues to the game while Shadow’s offering is action-packed and builds on the former’s strengths. This is the most you’ll ever get of Shadow the Hedgehog for quite a while, so dig in while it’s hot. ∎

We Sonic fans are an interesting, resilient bunch. For decades, we have survived strings of some of the worst AAA games ever made, punctuated occasionally by an okay game. And yet, we persevered! Whenever people on the internet would make fun of us, we would proudly say “30 years of bad games didn’t kill us. You really think YOU can?” Yet here I stand, hand in hand with my best friend Shadow the Hedgehog, 25 years after the franchise sped into the third dimension with Sonic Adventure – and I can confidently say that Shadow Generations is the best 3D...

Generations' stages expertly transition between 2D & 3D set pieces that see Sonic speeding through colossal amounts of destruction. However, several can quickly go off the rails if players slightly nudge the controller's thumbstick, potentially shooting players off the stage, often making replicating the developers' intended result frustrating. The combination of fast-paced movements and slower platforming sections was often a clashing concept that punished players. Many stages in Sonic X Shadow Generations circumvent this issue by adding multiple pathways in each stage. However, some sections still feel challenging due to questionable design decisions instead of being difficult on purpose.

Sonic x Shadow Generations is the ultimate way to play any of the hedgehogs' adventures. While the Shadow standalone story eclipses that of the Blue hero, both are terrific in terms of gameplay and genuinely feel like some of the best games the legendary franchise has to offer.

In what can only be described as a monumental return to form for both hedgehogs, Sonic X Shadow Generations combines two excellent campaigns to create what is likely the very best 3D Sonic game so far. The remastered Generations content remains a delight, taking you through some of the series' most iconic stages, but Shadow's new chapter represents the franchise's 3D gameplay at its very best. It introduces a bunch of awesome new abilities while showcasing some of the most creative stages we've ever seen, and we're keen to keep replaying to nail those crucial S-ranks. Alas, there's still no...

Shadow's latest chapter is arguably his best video game outing yet and easily the definitive experience in Sonic X Shadow Generations. The remaster of Sonic's existing campaign tops it all off, even if it has aged a bit in 2024. Fans of the ultimate lifeform (and the blue blur) should have a blast with this one.

Sonic x Shadow Generations is exactly what a remastered re-release should be. 2011's Sonic Generations looks and performs much better, while the new Shadow Generations puts Shadow in the limelight and gives his story closure. With bosses and stages old and new, it’s a fantastic action platformer with just the right dash of nostalgia.

Sonic x Shadow Generations essentially bundles up a remaster of the original game with a new Shadow-led sequel. Though while taking control of Shadow is fun thanks to his range of new abilities, and there's a new Sonic Frontiers-inspired hub world to explore, it's basically more of the same, complete with highs and lows.

Sonic X Shadow Generations seems targeted specifically to fans like me, and not just because “Sonic X Shadow” is a term I’ve been intimately familiar with since the age of 13. If Sonic Generations is a celebration of the long history of the blue blur, then the added “Shadow Generations” content celebrates the slightly-less-long history of his rival, and Sonic Team has smashed it out of the park. Shadow’s stages improve on Generations’ level design and extra challenges to make th...

People will no doubt call Sonic X Shadow Generations a “love letter” or “tribute” to Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic’s brooding rival who debuted back in 2001’s Sonic Adventure 2. But as a person who grew up seeing the black-and-red hedgehog as the emotional center of the franchise, it feels more like an apology. Sega has not been kind to Shadow over the years. Where once he was a complex, playable mainstay in the series, the Ultimate Lifeform has become a flanderized background character defined almost entirely by not liking other people and wanting to beat the blue blur in any...

While I’d love to live in a world of Shadow Generations being the whole thing, there’s fun to be had with Sonic Generations as well. It’s just like putting a $200 collectible figure on the table next to an action figure you picked up at Walmart for a fraction of the price. The action figure is fun to play with, but you can just sit and stare at the collectible in admiration every time you walk past it. While it’s relatively short, Shadow Generations feels like someone took Sonic Frontiers and retroactively applied its secret sauce to an older 3D...

Alongside a lovingly remastered Sonic Generations showcase, Shadow Generations is a dark and broody triumph that not only pays homage to the cult classic outing of yester-year for the troubled hedgehog, but also irons out all the aspects that fans didn't quite take to, effectively giving Shadow the do-over they deserve. It's a fast-paced and fluid Sonic title with great new mechanics, a tonne of replayability, and just the right amount of challenge. The fact that this is a short experience will irk a few, as will the lack of crossover between the two games, but all in all, Sonic...

SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS revitalizes the beloved Sonic Generations, originally released in 2011 to commemorate the franchise’s 20th anniversary. Back in 2011, Sonic Generations was heralded as a return to form for SEGA's spiky mascot. After a spate of poorly-received games, Sonic Team finally brought the hedgehog back with this simple and reflective title, celebrating the character's 20th anniversary. 13 years later, this fan favourite has returned with a remaster on modern platforms, and while it's perfectly serviceable, the real draw is a brand new campaign starring the edgy antihero, Shadow the Hedgehog.

Shadow Generations feels like a sequel. This is a pretty neat trick for an add-on bundled with a remaster. The controls are better, the graphics are crisp, and the level design is great. While the Sonic section looks awesome, it still feels like the original release. Which is normally fine for a remaster. But it pales a bit compared to the new content. On the other hand, both halves have that incredible corny energy that I love. Sonic (and Shadow) are synonymous with edgy nonsense for me, and this game truly delivers on that front. Whether you played the original...

Sonic x Shadow Generations bundles the original Sonic Generations and a new Shadow Generations campaign in one thrilling package. Whether you’re a fan of Sonic’s rival-turned-ally or not, his side of the game is filled with some of the best, most well-designed levels in the series’ 3D history. It’s a chunky piece of content, too, with plenty of optional challenges and unlockables to collect. In fact, Shadow Generations is so good that it makes Sonic’s half of the game look somewhat amateurish in comparison.
