The Grand Archive Story Pack isn’t very grand and is pretty light on story. There’s some new pathways to explore but not enough substance to recommend this expansion over other DLC in the franchise.

A wonderful game on its own, but beware of its own lack of optimization and stuttering late-game.

A sizeable, if not drastically altering addition.

All this isn’t to say that I think the game is irredeemably flawed, quite the opposite. A lot of the UI and bug issues it had when I was first playing where cleared up with the Clarke update and I have every reason to think these balance issues will be worked out in short order. Honestly, with a game this big and this ambitious, bugs and balance issues are pretty much expected. Even with all I’ve talked about I haven’t touched strategic resources, genetic manipulation, Kaiju and Xenomorph taming, or a whole host of other crazy things you can do...

In the end, then Stellaris is a tremendous return to form from Paradox. The title manages to mix complex strategy mechanics with a more lenient attitude towards newcomers to great success, granting a level of flexibility of play rarely seen in the genre. Combined with some great world-building and an enchanting atmosphere, Stellaris comes highly recommended.

Stellaris builds a foundation that will hopefully yield something wonderful within the next few years of patches and expansions. For now, this is a good game that I recommend for both the newcomer and the hardened veteran that probably already has this game.

But what I'm most hoping for are official, bolt-on replacements for systems like diplomacy and ship building, which just aren’t quite as polished as I’d like to see at release. Paradox has proven that it is willing to work on long timelines, and has a history of supporting its games years after launch with substantive upgrades. I expect that, three years from now, Stellaris will be a much improved experience. As far as Paradox has come from its roots in historical gaming, it needs to go just a little bit further to make this futuristic departure truly great.

An expansive 4X strategy game that will give you an endless amount of game play and more. Stellaris is all about the right management of your resources, time, and researches. Then in the end have your race as the top species in the universe.

Overall, Stellaris is pretty much a well-polished game even in its early-access period. For one, its developer has worked on several strategy titles such as Europa Universalis and Crusader Kings. It’s a great game for starters since even though its tutorial just touches the very basic aspects of its gameplay, players will learn the other aspects with relative ease by playing the game through and it does not bombard a newbie with a lot of information; so much so that it forces them away from playing. Stellaris is a good looking game with a lot of immersive content which would...

Certainly there are flaws and things that could, and perhaps should, have been in the game. That’s why Stellaris isn’t a stellar (heh, heh) title right now, instead, being just a good 4x/grand strategy hybrid. If past games are to be any example, a few DLCs down the line, Stellaris will be a much better and more complex game. That is why, should you be looking for the complexity of Crusader Kings II or Europa Universalis IV, you won’t find it. Not right now, at least. You will, however, still find a good grand strategy that, while far from being...

Stellaris captures the wonder of exploring space and colonizing the stars, but gets bogged down when the borders freeze and negotiations start. A solid foundation of things to come and an excellent entry-level grand strategy game, this will hopefully be a good start for a greater experience to come.

The long-awaited Stellaris game has conquered space and... Steam. Paradox has created a great 4X style space strategy game. Despite its shortcomings, it is an extremely addictive production.

Marrying Paradox’s particular brand of real time grand strategy to the familiarity of space and 4X empire building has worked wonders, making this the most welcoming and accessible of their games that I’ve played. There’s a few minor niggles, but it’s compelling and it’s easy to lose yourself in Stellaris for hours at a time, as you build your empire and explore both the galaxy and the stories that it can contain.

The great experiment of the game was not so much the change of scenery, from history to science fiction, it was the decision to create a Civ-like game of expansion with some complexities and aspects of simulation borrowed from grand strategy. It's in the simulation of a living galaxy that most of the complexity has been lost, but what has been gained is a precise and finely tuned machine. Less erratic and surprising than its ancestors, but much more elegant in its design.

This is a game for anyone who has already enjoyed the grand strategy genre or anyone who has always wanted to. There is a strong sense of accomplishment from starting an empire and guiding it along the path you choose, even if it eventually ends in failure. Stellaris is easy to comprehend and exciting to execute, which is a perfect combination for a genre notoriously difficult to break into.

Stellaris is filled with good ideas, and it’s not difficult to see the outline of a great space strategy game where those ideas could come together. But beyond the early game, it’s only compelling in bits and pieces – it turns into a largely uneventful slog after that. Paradox has developed a reputation of major upgrades to their games for years after launch, and Stellaris is going to need all that love and more to reach its potential.

Unreasonable expectation of perfection aside, Stellaris is an expertly blended mosaic of 4X, grand strategy and self-created narrative. For the relatively small niche that this game occupies, it is the undisputed master and commander. It’s also a nice platform for DLC and modding so as if the game didn’t provide enough substance out of box, then I’m sure there’s going to be plenty of content for years of come to constantly rejuvenate the experience. If you’re the type of person who dreams of galactic empire, write a nicely worded letter to the people in your life saying “see you later”...
