Tetris is one of the greatest video games of all time, and Tetris Effect: Connected is perhaps the best iteration of the classic puzzler yet. While this Switch port doesn't offer a great deal over existing versions in terms of features, it delivers the one key ingredient that its rivals cannot: portability. Sure, some will argue that Tetris Effect: Connected's unique brand of synesthesia only really comes alive when played on PSVR or an Oculus Quest headset, but we'd argue quite passionately that this game benefits far more from the ability to pick it up and play whenever, wherever. Just...

Tetris Effect: Connected upgrades its musical rhythms and visualizations with fun multiplayer PvP, but the new Connected mode steals the multiplayer show with an exciting, energetic way to play Tetris that’s a welcome alternative to its competitive modes.

Tetris Effect is an absolute beauty, but the gameplay powering this audiovisual phenomenon is still the same old Tetris. Players won’t be starved for options, but those hoping for something game-changing like Tetris 99 or Tetris: The Grand Master will feel somewhat empty.

Tetris Effect is the most optimistic game of the year. Plus, nobody saw it coming. It shouldn't be possible to say this, but this is the best Tetris has been in decades.

I’ve always kind of enjoyed Lumines, but it always lacked a certain hook. While its music and changing colour palette was endlessly exciting, its gameplay just didn’t have the same long-lasting grab. With Tetris, though, that enticing gameplay is there. And when you couple Tetris‘ classic gameplay with enticing sound and visuals, you get something pretty special indeed.

We may all be different, speak different languages, have different educations, but we all have Tetris. Seven small blocks called tetrominoes that make lines. It’s so pure in execution, people sometimes call it Tetris when they stack their groceries perfectly in their trunk. Tetris is a great equalizer. I think that is Tetris Effect’s greatest accomplishment. Showing me that anyone can play, just like my grandmother did all those years ago. She would have loved it, just like I do.

If only it was easy to put into words how Tetris Effect will make you feel. Unfortunately, there’s a reason we’re here writing reviews rather than best-sellers, but we’re going to give it our best shot. Much like Rez Infinite before it, there’s something melancholy and moving about Tetsuya Mizuguchi’s take on the decades old Russian puzzler. On a 4K television with HDR it’s a dazzling experience, but with PlayStation VR it’s a borderline spiritual one.

Some people will be disappointed by the lack of competitive modes, and that’s fair enough, but don’t let their omission bring you down too much. Tetris Effect isn’t intended to be a heated head-to-head sort of game. It’s more sentimental. Whether you’ve loved Tetris since the ’80s or you’ve never quite meshed with its status as an all-time classic, you should be able to find something to latch onto here. Seasoned players can tweak the settings just the way they like and tone down the visuals. Newcomers can crank up the extravagant effects and relish the whimsical atmosphere. Everyone wins.

A masterful reimagining of Tetris that changes little about the core gameplay but still manages to create one of the most immersive video games ever.

Who would think that a new version of a simple game like Tetris could deliver such a thoroughly absorbing experience? The merging of time-tested gameplay with the synesthesia-inducing sound and visual design of Tetsuya Mizuguchi creates something you’ve likely never experienced. While Tetris Effect’s diverse and beautiful presentation can sometimes literally get in the way of the gameplay, this is proof that even after 30+ years, Tetris can still feel fresh.

Tetris Effect is the best iteration of the game franchise since the New Tetris on Nintendo 64. The team at Enhance Games took serious risks with gameplay and the payoff is tremendous for gamers. Anyone who loves puzzlers will instantly be drawn in by the new feel of it and folks who are new to the series will be surprised and delighted by the absurd attention to detail found in every corner of this game. Tetris Effect is one of the best games to be released this year, and Tetsuya Mizuguichi's team has truly changed the game for the better....

After a few sessions of each, the Relax section may well become even more alluring, with a series of ambient playlists and a no-fail rule keeping everything nice and peaceful. It’s fantastic to have all of the different options, but I still found myself drifting back to the central Journey experience for just one more shot at my high score. No matter which mode you’re playing, chances are you’ll be seeing far more than just blocks spinning by when you close your eyes.

Tetris Effect is here, and it is going to completely alter your perception of Tetris. The basic concept is there, but all of these other layers are added on top of it. It plays with animation, light, music, sound, and even tactical feedback to bring you deeper into the puzzle game. Rather than just focusing on scores, it can be more about adaptability and survival. It is about being one with the game and knowing exactly what not only each tetromino, but also you, are capable of.
