The five stories can be played in any order and will change based on the choices that you make. Echoes of...

“Telltale Games continues to sharpen its storytelling tools with a spin-off in 'The Walking Dead: 400 Days' that takes an unexpected approach to setting up Season Two.”

In this time of SpooOOooky things, I review The Walking Dead: 400 Days.

The Walking Dead: 400 Days is a great appetizer for Season 2. The ending’s a bit too simple (Wait, if they’re hiding from people, why would they do that?) and I don’t love the characters like I loved Lee and Clem, but the action and drama show that Telltale still has it and isn’t satisfied to pump out exactly what the developers did last year. That -- like these five stories -- is very exciting.

Despite this, The Walking Dead: 400 Days is a worthwhile, bold narrative experiment. It throws away most of the trappings of the adventure game genre that the first season still hung onto; it’s more directed, which perhaps makes it less compelling to play, but just as wonderful to experience. If The Walking Dead is more about dialogue and choices than the occasional puzzle and cupboard searching, then 400 Days is an excellent addition to the series.

400 Days still contains many of the technical hiccups that plagued season 1 like slowdowns during hectic moments, audio playing out of sync, and those odd cuts during scenes which might be the game pulling the scene meant for the dialog choice you picked.

The 400 Days expansion is an episode that serves as a bridge between the first and second seasons of The Walking Dead. At least that's what its authors claim, because in reality there are no references to the story of Lee and Clem here.

The story found in 400 Days carries The Walking Dead brand, but the DLC nature ultimately hinders its source material. As a taste of things to come, it is a fine prequel, but on its own merits, it is merely a group of stories just begging for an ending.

400 Days is a short-story anthology that bridges two novels, and ties them all together so well that it’s hard to work out what would happen if you don’t play it. It’s all wonderfully written, and most importantly the feeling that you’re driving the story and action has never been better implemented. Yes the running time zips by and a few might miss the slower puzzle sections, but if Telltale continue on this course for Season Two then we might well have another Game of the Year candi...

As always, the choice system remains in 400 Days, with the signature ‘shades of grey’ choices littered in the DLC. Nothing is black and white, and the struggles of making a choice against a rapidly expiring timer is just as thrilling and difficult as ever. While we don’t get to see many of our choices come to fruition due to the length of the DLC, there are a few choices per character that will require replays just to experience the other choice.
